Artist Statement

“At the end of the day, we can endure much more than we think we can.” Frida Kahlo

To identify and reckon with circumstances from our recent cataclysmic event – Covid19 and its ensuing limitations, I’ve sequestered in my studio during quarantine and reflected on this new pathogen of which there is still much to be learned. This illuminated diptych renders visible my “Bifold Enumerations.”

To that end and with stay in place orders in effect, I’ve chosen an assumed space among the interstitial. “Twixt and ”tween this time of confinement – this fixed space – I’ve sought the regenerative through hybrid figures mnemonic of our current global crisis. Comprised of transparent layers, these poured ink dispersions evoke depictions of the virus; blobs, stains, and globules abound. As a disease transmitted through droplets, it is described as an elusive strain one cannot see with the human eye. Likewise, poured ink on frosted polyester plates creates levels of obfuscation that render areas ambiguous.

Amid application, I allow gravity to assist in producing “droplets” that traverse my substrate; soon after, pigment dries like dust. The resultant images reference exteriority and the body in their allusion to translucent skins. Conversely, interiority is underscored through an association to x-rays, conjuring what could be read as sentimental attempts to “see inside oneself.”

As this fluid pigment spawns forms linked to representation, its spread over the surface dually serves as a signifier for this infectious time in which we’re living – in the thick of it, a desire prevails to have it all shut tight. Yet these microorganisms are not impervious, forming fields that appear to be oozing, leaking. Similarly, our communities at present are also in states of flux.

More vital than these bifold enumerations, therefore, is our individual and collective response to them. At this locus where we occupy the space between – what will be our reflexive antidote?
