Artist Statement

Laura Domencic uses her practice as a way to access the place of possibility, a state of not knowing what exists between faith and doubt. She examines materiality to consider the physical nature of experiences as an antidote to the increasing dominance of the incorporeal, virtual experience. Her work is a quiet declaration of lived experience, that questions the“productivity and progress”gained from new technologies. It is a search for understanding how to be in this world, at this time. Her current body of work is made of ephemeral materials, marks, actions and time. The lines and threads bind, hold, secure, break, and rip apart at the seams in a state of constant repair and collapse. They are complete in the unfinished state, resting while hidden in plain sight. The slow making of drawing and sewing provide the certainty of touch. Through muscle memory, the investment of time becomes physical in the material paintings. The quiet subversiveness in these works are the physical form of doubt and hope in the possibilities of each moment, asking the viewer to pause and wonder.
