Robert Henne is a New Jersey-based artist and writer specializing in unique, colorful oil paintings, both representational and abstract. He has several years of exhibition and art instruction experience, and has recently released a book titled “The Perceptive Eye,” a guide to seeing the world around oneself through an artistic lens. His paintings reflect the focus of his book, often depicting decaying manmade structures through colors that revitalize the space and draw the viewer’s attention to parts of the world that may be overlooked in everyday interaction. His abstract art, called “Visionary Works” by the artist, contain organic, undulating forms that create thought-provoking compositions and seek to engage the viewer in a similar way. By exploring the impact of color on his compositions, Henne expresses his thoughts, feelings, and ideas in the oil medium. Robert Henne has recently had works selected for Special Recognition at LST Online Gallery, has extensive exhibition experience in the New Jersey and Eastern Pennsylvania area, and has had two past solo exhibitions in Princeton, NJ titled “Illuminations” and “Impact Through Color”.
Artist Statement
My work in paintings such as Dancing Spirits grows out of a fascination with liminal spaces: the thresholds between inner and outer worlds, between the recognizable and the unknown. These pieces are not about depicting a specific place or narrative; they are about evoking the moment when perception shifts and something deeper begins to surface.
I use organic shapes and biomorphic forms, often in vibrant reds, to give structure to thoughts and feelings that resist simple description. These shapes become symbolic presences: they might suggest figures, energies, or fragments of memory, but I deliberately leave them open so viewers can bring their own experiences to the work. The red forms, in particular, function as visual anchors—signals of intensity, vitality, and transformation moving through the pictorial space.
Color and form work together in my process as a kind of visual language. I am less interested in realism than in building an atmosphere that feels psychologically true. Edges blur, shapes overlap, and spaces both open and close, as if the painting itself were balancing between order and chaos. In this way, each piece becomes a symbolic landscape of the mind, where emotion, intuition, and contemplation coexist.
I consider what I do as “a thinking person’s art.” I want viewers to linger, to question what they are seeing, and to sense that there is more unfolding beneath the surface. The paintings are invitations rather than answers, asking you to pause in that liminal space where certainty gives way to curiosity.
Ultimately, these works are my way of mapping an inner terrain—using color, shape, and symbolic suggestion to explore how we experience change, tension, and possibility. In many cases they leave you not with a fixed interpretation, but with a heightened awareness of your own thoughts and perceptions.
