Duane was born in Texas, grew up in California, and lived in New York City and Florence, Italy, before moving to Maryland in 1988. His high school art teacher, Robert Worthington, was a significant mentor, encouraging Duane to develop his skills in drawing, painting, and art history. Duane believes that creating and experiencing art is vital for cognitive and emotional development. As a studio painter, he seeks the “zone,” a state of perfect flow, while as an art educator, he aims to help individuals harness their strengths and overcome fears. Duane is an award-winning painter with an extensive exhibition record and has taught art for 25 years in Baltimore County Public Schools. Since 2001, he has been a painting instructor at the Maryland Institute College of Art. He has lived in Granite, western Baltimore County, for the past 23 years with his wife Amy.
