Artist Statement
The Grid Drawings and Paintings are an examination of three major elements – color, surface and mark making. These nonrepresentational drawings give me the freedom to concentrate on and investigate more thoroughly the process by which I make them. They are largely inspired by woven textile art. The drawings are done on old textile paper, which is lined with a rectangular grid on which the designer would paint the image to be woven. The Grid Paintings are an extension of the Grid Drawings. Still with a textile design influence this series started off with a very rigid interpretation of the drawings and a predetermined path upon which the grid would develop. Once I allowed the paintings to take on a life of their own they began to speak a new language that allowed the grid to play with the canvas and tear down the literal and non-literal boundaries that previously existed.
