About Roberta Rose

Born and raised in Elizabeth, New Jersey, Roberta Rose was always creative and her artistic talents were encouraged by her family and noticed while she was in school, her teachers nurturing her process. From an early age she was exposed to the different languages, customs, and traditions of her friends and neighbors. Her small backyard became both inspiration and studio, a habit she continues to this day; many of her pieces are created on the patio table surrounded by her garden and bird feeders. Her travels in Europe encouraged her to formally study art. Rose works in a variety of mediums and her work has been featured in many galleries and shows. In photographs, Rose feels, there are colors, textures, light combinations, and contrasting images that can transform and take on a new reality. Her award winning work has been featured in many juried shows and galleries and she has been published by Somerset Studio magazine. Her photographs of Ground Zero taken the week of 9-11 were part of a national traveling exhibition and are now part of the permanent collection of the New York City Public Library. Her currents work brings photography, collage, and painting together, a fusion of elements telling a new story. Recently, Roberta has been invited to take part in an upcoming show this April at the D&R Greenway Land Trust Gallery at Princeton New Jersey.

New Brunswick Art Salon 2020 – Photography: Moments of Focus

Couple Fishing” brings the viewer onto a pathway in the forest, looking upon two people – one in a seat set up on the dirt path, one with a fishing rod, the horizontals of these grounding the figures amongst the trees reaching up into the sky. The soft, timeless effect of the photo makes the viewer wonder: who are these people, when was this taken, where are they, what is the story of this couple?

Artist Statement

These old photographs speak to me. They have been forgotten, discarded and abandoned, their stories crying out to be told. Something in each image calls out, perhaps for some color, some texture, some contrasting image to accompany them. Each finds its own unique combination of light and dark, truth and conjecture. They take on a new substance, a new reality, becoming more than they were; they are transformed, reborn.
