About Jean-Paul

Artist Statement – About Work “Sweeps”

Photography has been presented as a flat rectangle or square, ridgely framed dictated by the camera’s viewfinder. 20th Century painters like Mondrian, Mecarelli, Stella and others broke through, escaped, and created art works in shaped canvases which allowed the paintings to be part of the wall and change the spatial environment they inhabited. Some were hung on a dutch angle.

My photographic “Sweeps” do the same. Moving the camera (iPhone) across the picture plane, like a brush, the image escapes the viewfinder’s limitations and the photograph captures my fragmented views and memories. And like memory, parts are sharp, clear, even repetitive, while other parts are fussy, missing or cropped.

These unorthodox shaped photographs, direct from the camera, are retrieved and printed with minimal manipulation in post production. The image reveals how it should be printed and on what surface.

The flat dye sublimation on aluminum prints, in this portfolio, are cut and bent by hand to reveal the shape and to let it breath. The photograph is hung on the wall, with space behind, at its own aesthetically dutch angle. The wall acts as the negetive space of the finish photograph which is influencing its environment.

Each of my photographs as movies condense in to one single frame.
