About Alice Harrison

Alice Harrison, born in NYC and now living and working in NJ has made art in some form as part of her life- even when earning a living in other fields and raising a family.

Starting out traditionally and gradually becoming more abstract and evolving into using mixed media collage and assemblage.

She has exhibited widely in galleries and universities throughout the United States and has been shown in Europe, Mexico, South Africa, Israel, Dubai, and New Zealand.  Alice has had more than two dozen solo shows and received numerous awards.

Her work is included in public collections such as Noyes Museum, Johnson & Johnson, Shaghaf Group, Dubai, Blue Man Group, Museum of Collage, Mexico, Turchin Center, NC, Art Colle, France and Tsank Laurenov National, Bulgaria.

She has received several Geraldine Dodge grants as well as a grant from Soaring Gardens, PA and been in several publications one of which is the book, Masters: Collage.

Artist Statement

Born in New York City and now living and working in New Jersey, art in some form has always been and will always be part of me and my life – even when earning a living in other fields and raising a family.

Starting traditionally doing representative art, I gradually moved to more abstract work and combining a range of media. I am inspired by materials I have collected as well as by traditional art materials in my studio. Combining things with a former life with new materials has been a wonderful challenge.  Although I still love the juiciness and freedom of painting, collage has more and more been an element in my work.

The creative process for me is intuitive, starting with materials and/or marks that I make.

Working in layers, technically, intellectually, and spiritually I create images and sensations of color, harmony, and joy. Inspiration comes from the inside-based on my personal distillation of the external world.

Most of my work is two dimensional, but have through the years created handmade books. Mainly they have been accordion books so that they can be viewed as a book and when open as a panorama.
