Neal Korn, “Gravity Claiming its Prize”, watercolor, graphite, watercolor
pencils and ink on paper, 14″x11″

About

Neal Korn is a visual and psychological artist from Nyack, New York. Fascinated by the human mind, Korn studied Psychology in college. After taking one drawing class, he realized art was his true calling. Following his time at college, he worked in various jobs that kept him connected to art. From designing displays for Barnes & Nobles to teaching art in New Jersey, Korn’s love for Psychology never faded. As an artist, his love for Psychology has transferred to his love for nature. He hopes his artwork can transport others into a place where one can feel a primal, deep connection to the beauty of the world around us.

Korn began to receive some recognition after winning the Shaw Award for Painting at Brooklyn College. This allowed him to show his art in various galleries and museums. In 2024, he won a fellowship from the New Jersey Council of Arts. Other awards and grants came from Geraldine R. Dodge Fellowship, FAWC, Geraldine R. Dodge mini-grants, and HEART Grants. His work and articles have been featured in the Best of Painting book (Rockport), The Newark Star Ledger, The New York Times, Go Out, The Courier News, Who’s Who in the East, and on NJ.com. Korn has been recognized for Outstanding Achievement by the Union County Board of Freeholders and has been awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award from Kean University.

2026 NBAS Watercolor and Mixed Media “Liquid Layers”

Artist Statement

“My process begins by drawing many figures. I use ink, watercolor and graphite for the rendering. Next, I select a background. For my background, I use a photo for reference of something I photographed on a walk or I make it up. Once I complete the background, I choose the figure(s) to place in the background image. The figure is cut out and glued down to the background. It is always a surprise when I discover which figures work in the image and what it means. I love that chance brought these two random images together. The viewer sees a naturalistic image which has a multi-faced quality of content, very much the way we come across scenes in our own lives and can only wonder just what is happening in front of us.”
