About Marina Burana

Marina Burana was born in Argentina, and received her BFA at Taipei National University of Arts in Taiwan where she currently works and resides. With dual residency in Argentina and Taiwan, Burana has displayed her works in group exhibitions in both countries, as well as in Mérida, México and Los Angeles, USA. Her work has been published in several publications including a variety of magazines, journals, and a poetry book cover. In her paintings, Burana manipulates the texture of oils across surfaces, toying with thickness and depth. Recently she focused on creating strong, full colors from earthy pigments, and recently started experimenting with new natural materials, such as tree bark. Along with nature, she incorporates her poetry and memories into her pieces. Using these elements, Burana weaves a narrative that is deeply personal and rooted in movement and the intricacies of natural world.

Artist Statement

My work often centers around poetry and memory. Taking inspiration from poems that have a profound impact on me and from intimate memories, I try to weave a personal visual literacy reinvented and rearranged by rich and full colors and by a constant search of a narrative derived from movement. I also delve into the intricacies of the natural world around me, especially plants and flowers, which often appear in everything I paint and have taken a protagonist role these past months.

I work in oils mostly, occasionally in acrylics, and I am exploring how to make cloth/paper out of the bark of the Paper Mulberry tree and use it as a surface to paint on with natural pigments. This isa very long and beautiful process. When it comes to oils, I love the texture and playing with thick and thin paint on the canvas, and the kind of depth that can be achieved with them. I am also learning how
