Jonathan Yubi (b. 1993 Bronx, New York) is a narrative painter working on the themes of identity, labor, and social unrest. He uses construction workers as a central motif, interweaving them into parable-like narratives of contemporary events that echo broader labor history as a crucial thread with Pan- American narratives. Yubi graduated from Lehman College CUNY with a BFA. He previously attended Memphis College of Art and the University of Central Florida. His work has been presented in exhibitions at Montclair Art Museum, Anna Zorina Gallery, 17 Frost Gallery, CityArts Factory, among others.

Artist Statement
As a painter inspired by the structure of literature, Yubi weaves characters into compositions of parables and historical landscapes. He focuses on laborers- documented and undocumented- who represent themes of identity, labor, and social unrest. The tools of their trade, symbols of modernity, are both replaced and fortified by pikes, halberds, and long axes. Yubi’s current series, Work i(s/n) Progress, draws inspiration from the Works Progress Administration, a New Deal program under FDR, and echoes broader labor history as a crucial thread in Pan- American narratives.
Como pintor inspirado en la estructura de la literatura, Yubi teje personajes en composiciones de parábolas y paisajes históricos. Se centran en los trabajadores (documentados e indocumentados) que representan temas de identidad, trabajo y malestar social. Las herramientas de su oficio, símbolos de la modernidad, son reemplazadas y reforzadas por picas, alabardas y hachas largas.
