About Jill Hellman:

Jill Hellman is a New York City native and mixed-media artist with an extensive educational background. She received her B.A. in Anthropology from the University of Michigan, her M.A. in Anthropology from NYU, and her M.S.W.at the Silver School of Social Work, also from NYU. Her works have been shown and collected on an international scale since 2016. She has also worked at more than ten residencies and has had her pieces displayed at various exhibitions.

Jill Hellman has an extensive background and career within the fine–art world alongside her work as a psychotherapist. She uses her background in this field to help inform her work, methodically drawing inspiration from her physical surroundings, as well as her internal landscape. Hellman’s favored materials include pastels, charcoal, and graphite, alongside experimenting with different approaches that add a distressed aesthetic to her canvases.

Artist Statement:

“When I step into my studio, I step into possibility.

I feel a freedom and excitement to explore my materials,

thoughts, ideas and emotions and connect with what is most true for me”.

Ethereal Garden

Jill Hellman is a mixed-media artist and a psychotherapist. She works intuitively, drawing inspiration from the environment and her own internal landscape. Each painting evolves through multiple layers of paint and collage, mark making with pastels, charcoal and graphite, and distressing the surface with a variety of tools. Her work is complex and deeply layered, often whimsical and playful, celebrating the strength and resilience of the human spirit.

In a search for truth, possibility and hope in challenging world, Jill’s paintings are a map of her quest to make peace with the chaos and complexity of being human. She invites the viewer to share and experience her creative journey and feel a sense of resolution, even if the resolution is momentary.

Jill shows and sells her work throughout the US and abroad.
