Artist Statement

As a fine art photographer, I strive to extract the beauty and complexity in everyday objects from their connection to the real world. Through close-up photography, I create new entities from old, defining them afresh by their form, color, size and scale. I have discovered that as I focus on my everyday world through my macro lens, I encounter a hidden world that now reveals its unique grace, mystery, beauty and sometimes even a story.

To achieve my goal, I have safaried through woods and rocky landscapes, store fronts and construction sites, arboretums and city streets to capture the grace and allure concealed in plants and trees, the rusted, metal and peeling paint on machinery and everyday objects all around me.

My choice of subjects has been eclectic, to say the least. To the naked eye, the peeling paint on an old dumpster suggests decay; however, through my macro lens, it takes on new life, a shulking figures against a mountain background, or a woman running from a mysterious villain. The bark on a weathered tree suddenly takes on the appearance of a menacing ape, or an ancient wizard. A dead leaf on a random pottery shard becomes a complex study in color and geometry. Capturing all these qualities through my lens is a true delight to share, even as viewers “see” totally different visions in the works than I.
