About Caridad Sierra Kennedy

On A Precious Grid of Hope

Caridad Sierra Kennedy is a Latinx painter currently working in Hoboken, NJ. During her Fine Arts Studies (concentration in painting) at Rutgers Univ- Newark, NJ, she chose to study the work of the Modern Masters, Abstract Expressionism and Contemporary painting. She creates abstract and reimagined landscape paintings. They are often composite images in mixed media on paper/canvas which reflect interior and exterior landscape as a metaphor for personal expression informed by contemporary concerns. The images are sourced from intuition and memory of her experience with the natural world with regards to the intrapsychic connection. Formal investigations consist of the depiction of shape, color, light and spatial dimension. It becomes a visual quest for balance between these elements and the emotion evoked. She is inspired by her environment, spirituality, psychology and humanity. After her Fine Arts education, she pursued a Masters degree in art therapy. Kennedy’s work has been featured in seven solo exhibits and numerous group exhibits in New Jersey, New York, and DC Metro area, online and is in three dozen private collections and two public collections nationally.

Artist Statement

I am a native Hudson County, NJ Latinx painter who creates abstract landscapes. They are imaginative places where the natural world becomes a metaphor for sentiment and experience. In my abstract landscapes, I consider not just the physical environment, but also the interplay it may have with the psyche in an effort to express my own humanity and reflect upon contemporary concerns.

When searching for images, I rely on the mind, body and spirit (intuitive images which come to me via experience and vision). Largely relying on memory and occasionally using my own sketches, I enjoy working with organic shapes to explore/deconstruct forms. Searching for balance between form and color is an endless quest. The organic/representational forms are intended to draw the viewer in to engage in visual play and completion of narrative through visual gestalt. Movement is often captured and frequently noted by others in my work which serves as a visual reflection of time, energy and experience. Color and material choices are selected to express emotionality accordingly and range from acrylics, oils, watercolor and other mixed media on paper or canvas.
