Artist Statement

My artwork is a colorful gaze and emotional response to moments within humanity. As a close observer of my surroundings, I take notice of the human experiences and interactions happening around me. Acting as a storyteller of my environment, I reference friends, family, and community members to create oil on canvas paintings that merge the realms of realism and expressionism.

Serving as a continuation of those who have come before me, my art is a representation of Black Figuration. Resisting political attributes or marginalization due to identity, my art focuses on the individual and the emotional elements of each captured moment. By use of the snapshot, I capture reference images of moments that allude to joy and strength. I am captivated by happy moments where I see others in peace, thriving, and enjoyment. In a world that can be overwhelmed by inconsistencies, violent actions, and intrusive thoughts, I focus my art on the moments of contentment; bringing peace to myself and those who experience my art.

Believing in the transformative power of oil paint, my paintings are not just documents of moments, but reflect on the beautiful complex nature of the human experience. These relatable figures allow the viewers to draw out personal experiences and memories. By combining the figure with expressionistic elements through brush strokes and color, I am expressing my response to the vulnerable, yet beautiful, complexity of humanity. My paintings are a collection of colorful histories, reflecting on our connection to one another. Everything is everything and we are not all so different.
