John Wolff had an interest in art from an early age, but did not pursue his art career until after his retirement.  In his last year of working as an International Captain, John rediscovered his desire to draw and paint.  When he retired, he returned to art full time and began taking drawing and watercolor painting classes.  He had not had any formal art training before this time.  He has continued to work in watercolor and is a member of multiple watercolor societies located in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York, and Maryland.  The primary focus of his work is in portraits and figure paintings. By Alexa Varga

Artist Statement

“What attracts me is that little moment in time that suggests a thought or action on the part of the subject….or as others have said, ‘an arrested movement’ of the head or body….a gesture, if you will.  I don’t necessarily want to illustrate an obvious moment.  Rather, I try to suggest that ‘something else is going on’ and let the viewer ponder what that might be.”
