This exhibition features emotionally charged paintings and sculptures that delve into the complexities of human emotion through spontaneous mark-making and layered textures. \nThe exhibition includes paintings that intertwine artistic practice with meditation\, offering a space for contemplation on collective consciousness. Works featuring layers of handmade papers\, drawings\, and natural elements depict the rejuvenation found in nature\, encouraging a deeper exploration of the environment. Other oil paintings depicting landscapes and overlooked scenes of daily life explore themes of cultural heritage\, womanhood\, and human connection. Dramatic landscapes and figurative collages blend imagery and abstract forms to investigate the shifting boundaries between chaos and order. \nThe anthology is completed with sculptures that add rich textures and vibrant colors to the exhibition. Dense abstract works composed of layers of fabric and vivid paint are juxtaposed with wire houses filled with negative space. These pieces balance the paintings they accompany\, evoking themes of humanity\, place\, and emotion while taking viewers deeper into their exploration and journey through a tapestry of artistry. \nBeneath the dramatic landscapes and human experiences in the paintings\, viewers can dive into familiar elements presented in fresh and thought-provoking ways through the vibrant colors and textures brought to life by our talented artists’ unique visions. Join us for this extraordinary exhibition that promises to engage\, inspire\, and provoke thought. Color and Texture: Anthologies of Artistry is free and open to the public\, Tuesday to Saturday from 11 am to 6 pm. \nAbout the New Brunswick Art Salon Initiative: \nAlfa Art Gallery utilizes New Brunswick Art Salons to unify the local art community and beyond. Since starting the program in 2010\, Alfa has made a point to include a salon dedicated to showcasing pieces in watercolor\, oil\, photography\, and various mixed mediums. Over the years\, the series has not only exhibited works from both established and emerging artists\, but has also made fruitful connections locally and internationally through its successful programs. Within this non-profit organization\, Alfa Art Gallery maintains its mission to uplift artists by providing an open and innovative environment that is dedicated to fostering a vibrant and diverse cultural community. \n2024 NBAS Featured Artists in Oil\, Sculpture\, and Mixed Media: \nFeatured Artists: RitzB (Ritu Bajaj)\, Josephine Barreiro\, RitaMarie Cimini\, Kat Collins\, Jane Dell\, Kiran Dhaliwal\, Carmelita Diaz Kamin\, Dan Finaldi\, Shoshana Kertesz\, Sandra Koberlein\, Duane Lutsko\, Lisa Marseglia-Moran\, Kirk Maynard\, Rosalind Nzinga\, Keith Vogrin\, Rebecca Welz\, Deborah Winiarski. \nRitu Bajaj\, also known as RitzB\, is a New Jersey-based artist specializing in contemporary realism. After starting her artistic journey in college and receiving oil painting training in India\, she honed her skills even further by studying after a master in the United States. Baja’s extensive training is apparent in her tight technical pieces\, as her paintings display a high level of detail and accuracy. Her pieces\, primarily in oil\, are often inspired by nature\, inviting viewers to see beauty in small moments and appreciate daily life. Baja has participated in several showcases and juried exhibitions and has done commissioned work for private collectors. \nJosephine Barreiro\, also known as J131\, is a mixed media and street artist based in Newark\, New Jersey. Her colorful paintings use acrylic\, oil stick\, and spray paint to feature stylized humans and animals against vibrant backgrounds. The foreground and background are often distinguished through a contrast in color or\, in the case of her black-and-white work\, a variation in pattern and texture. Barreiro’s paintings combine natural\, animalistic subject matter with the chaos and vitality of street art. Her work is infused with emotion\, utilizing distinct lines and bold colors that reflect her Spanish heritage and urban upbringing. Although they are still images\, the vibrancy of her pieces creates an incredible sense of movement and energy\, contributing to her themes of spirituality\, anxiety\, and transformation. Barreiro’s work has been featured in an NYC-ARTS segment on PBS and exhibited in various galleries throughout the United States. \nRitaMarie Cimni is a fine artist based in Delaware. Through her work\, she uses common experiences to connect to the viewer’s collective consciousness. Her works for this exhibit\, including Yet Spring\, Vernal\, and Magnificent Beings\, are intertwined with her meditation practices\, which can be found on her blog\, where she holds meditation groups and writes about art and spirituality. Her radiant paintings\, informed by daily meditation practices\, investigate links between sight and interior vision. Cimini was the President of Studio Montclair\, a nonprofit visual arts organization\, and holds an M.F.A. in painting and sculpture from Bennington College. Her work is held in private collections in the United States and abroad\, as well as in the public collections of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and the MC Hotel. \nKat Collins is an acclaimed abstract artist based in Easton\, Pennsylvania\, known for her vibrant\, emotionally charged mixed-media paintings. With a B.F.A. from Mount Vernon Nazarene University\, she has developed a distinctive style characterized by spontaneous mark-making\, layered textures\, and a rich palette. Utilizing diverse materials such as ink\, collage\, graphite\, oil pastel\, acrylic paint\, and charcoal\, Collins captures the complexity of human emotion through intricate layers and textures. Inspired by artists like Willem de Kooning and Jean-Michel Basquiat\, she aims to evoke profound emotional responses\, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in the present moment and reflect on the shared human experience. Her work has been featured in esteemed venues across Pennsylvania\, New Jersey\, and North Carolina and has been represented by Connexions Gallery since 2022. \nJane Dell is a contemporary American artist and painter who combines imagery and inventive abstract forms in her free-flowing\, colorful\, surreal landscapes and figurative collage paintings. Dell holds a B.F.A. in painting and printmaking from Pratt Institute. Furthermore\, she studied textile design and fabric arts at Parsons School of Design and graphic design\, as well as illustration and printmaking at The School of Visual Arts N.Y.C. Her work is included in many private collections in New York\, New Jersey\, Switzerland\, and Matera\, Italy. Her mixed-media works are created with acrylic and collage on canvas\, watercolor\, ink\, and photography. Dell’s experimental paintings are influenced by the unpredictability of life\, exploring the ever-shifting boundaries between chaos and order in nature. Her process begins with a loose idea guided through evolution by materials\, and her gestural brushwork blends organic shapes with geometric worlds. \nKiran Dhaliwal is a New Jersey-based artist whose work focuses on her experiences living in rural India. Dhaliwal was born in India and raised in the United States\, moving back and forth between the two countries as she grew up. Art has always been a big part of Dhaliwal’s life\, but it was not until 2016 that she began experimenting with oil paint\, where she used the medium to depict landscapes and everyday life scenes in India. Her oil paintings explore the lives of ordinary women in India\, depicting scenes of human connection and highlighting the culture of her birthplace. Paying homage to her past and exploring the culture of her birthplace. Dhaliwal’s work has been exhibited across the United States\, with notable shows in New York City\, Chicago\, and Washington\, D.C. \nCarmelita Diaz Kamin completed her Bachelor’s Degree in Visual Arts from the University of Guanajuato\, a postgraduate degree in Art Therapy from the University of Barcelona\, and a Master’s Degree in Visual Arts from the State University of New York. Diaz has participated in various individual and group exhibitions in Mexico\, the United States\, and Spain\, including Parameter of Lumen Art at the Carrillo Gil Musem\, Artefacts at the Equity Gallery in Manhattan\, and Art as Social Action at the University of Barcelona. Her work is characterized by the use of oil\, Chinese ink\, ceramics\, natural pigments\, and other materials that have always been covered by historical links with the stories immersed in the landscapes and living spaces. Through her multifaceted practice\, Diaz explores profound cultural history and personal self-exploration. \nDan Finaldi grew up in an immigrant home in Rochester\, New York surrounded by a diverse\, working-class community. From an early age\, his artistic passion was nurtured by a local commercial printer who provided him with paper for his sketches. After initial studies at a local community college\, he transferred to SUNY New Paltz\, where he committed to figurative painting despite the dominance of Abstract Expressionism. He later earned his MFA at Brooklyn College\, studying under renowned artists like Lois Dodd. Now residing in Highland Park\, New Jersey\, Finaldi’s work focuses on the narrative power of figuration\, particularly through scenes of diverse groups of people at play in public parks. His paintings aim to counter societal animosity by depicting harmonious interactions in communal spaces\, highlighting the potential for peaceful coexistence within the human family. \nShoshana Kertesz was born and raised in Budapest\, Hungary\, and currently resides in Nutley\, New Jersey. Her work is renowned for portraiture\, often painting realism utilizing oil and pencil-based mediums. Kertez’s portraiture renders an individual’s innermost world into distinct philosophical moods figuratively with subtle brushwork and carefully chosen color schemes. Through themes as self-examination conveyed through dramatic\, narrative visual means\, her artwork investigates what it means to be human and have an identity. She delves into themes of introspection and solitude using an expressive lyrical approach aiming to capture the essence in artists\, dancers\, and writers\, poets\, and musicians. While her paintings may seem light-hearted and whimsical\, viewing them provides a deep bond with our humanity. Her work is both evocative and introspective and has the ability to both capture the essence of its subjects and explore important and complex themes. \nSandra Koberlein is a media and abstract artist whose works are composed of intriguing layers. Her works include handmade papers\, original drawings\, photos\, cyanotype prints\, and ephemera. She specializes in encaustic paintings\, which captives her for their environmentally friend material\, rich history\, and creative challenges it gives her. Her work captures natural worlds\, transforming magical rejuvenations and providing a sense of place. Furthermore\, Koberlein is a certified encaustic instructor with R&F Handmade Paints and teaches through her workshops at local art centers and in her Pennsville\, NJ studio. She received an A.A. from The Art Institute\, a B.A. in Art\, and a B.A. in Education from Rowan\, earning the Gates Award for Excellence. H er dedication to encaustic painting—a medium with a rich history—infuses her work with a luminous quality that invites viewers to explore the depth and beauty of her creations. \nDuane Lutsko is a studio painter and art educator dedicated to invoking artistic processes to develop and sustain the human experience. Born in Texas\, raised in California\, and having resided in Maryland\, New York\, and now New Jersey\, Lutsko holds an M.F.A. in Painting from Brooklyn College\, C.U.N.Y.\, and a B.A. in Fine Arts (Painting) from U.C.L.A. He has instructed at various art institutions\, including the Maryland Institute College of Art and the Visual Art Center of New Jersey. His oil-based paintings delve into the American cultural landscape\, exploring elements etched into the collective consciousness. Lutsko examines the dichotomy of motor vehicles\, highways\, and roads—among other American staples—as symbols of both freedom and mundane daily routines. His paintings encourage spectators to view these everyday elements in a new light. \nLisa Marseglia-Moran is a distinguished Northern New Jersey artist and educator with a BFA from Boston College and a teaching certification from William Paterson College. With a 30-year journey teaching art in New Jersey\, her retirement in 2021 redirected her focus towards art making and creativity. Her dedication to creating unique mixed-media weavings earned her recognition and awards for her work in the metropolitan area. Her works\, specializing in oil on canvas and works on paper\, effortlessly intertwine artistry\, harmony\, and the natural world – delving into the profound beauty of nature and the inherent interconnectedness of life. Her abstract expressionist pieces\, crafted across various mediums including oils\, watercolor\, pen and ink\, and mixed media\, undergo a distinctive process: separate paintings and drawings are meticulously deconstructed and interwoven\, embodying her core themes of energy\, movement\, and unity. Each creation is a metaphor for Lak’Ech – the profound notion that we are all intricately linked. \nKirk Maynard is originally from Brooklyn\, New York\, utilizes art to highlight the political undercurrents of American identity and culture. His initial love of art came from comics and matured in high school when he worked as an art teaching assistant. His artistic expression further developed in graduate school when he began to focus more on politics in his work; His work evolved beyond simply art for aesthetic reasons\, but rather to highlight issues Maynard had already been thinking about. Maynard primarily uses oil paint and oil pastels\, focusing on portraiture\, where he uses composition\, juxtaposition\, and the profile angle to explore how identity and politics intersect. Maynard’s recent series focuses on contemporary society’s marginalization of black people\, the relationship between people of the African and Caribbean diaspora\, and the so-called American Dream. Now residing in New Jersey\, Maynard works not only as an artist but as an educator. \nRosalind Nzinga is a mixed-media artist dedicated to storytelling through textures\, textiles\, and paper. Nzinga studied drawing and painting at Herron School of Art and Design at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis and earned a B.F.A. from California State University\, Long Beach. Initially creating papier-mâché sculptures and assemblages\, Nzinga developed a profound appreciation for paper’s versatility. Such has led her to creating mixed media quilts\, paintings\, collages\, and installations using vintage lace and handmade upcycled paper. Furthermore\, Nzinga embraces repurposing materials resulting from being inspired by her grandmother’s recycling practice. Her art features abstract and interpretive narratives deeply influenced by her American and African roots. Her artwork showcases iconography and textiles from the African diaspora displayed in a poetic and transcendental manner. \nKeith J. Vogrin is a fine artist and neo-romantic oil painter residing in Bethlehem Township\, Pennsylvania. Vogrin holds a B.F.A. in Drawing and Painting from Pennsylvania State University. As an avid outdoorsman\, Vogrin’s passion for fishing\, camping\, and hiking profoundly influences his art. He maintains a studio in his Bethlehem home\, where he continues to create and exhibit award-winning pieces in juried shows across Pennsylvania\, New Jersey\, New York\, and Maryland. Vogrin views himself as a perpetual art student\, constantly seeking new challenges and inspiration. His work primarily focuses on nature and architecture\, capturing scenes from the Lehigh Valley\, the East Coast\, and the Pocono Mountains. Vogrin’s paintings are known for their dramatic contrasts of light and dark\, warm and cool colors\, and textured brush strokes in a controlled looseness style. His compositions often offer unique perspectives\, challenging viewers to see familiar environments in new ways. \nRebecca Welz\, born in California\, spent much of her adult life in New York City. For over 30 years\, she has taught at Pratt Institute. Her artistic career began as a painter before transitioning to working with sanded\, folded sheet acrylic and\, eventually\, steel. Inspired by origami\, Welz’s sculptures evolved from acrylic to her current use of heated and bent steel rods\, embodying the delicate interplay between nature and human influence. Her transition from painting to sculpting with steel reflects a journey toward capturing the essence of natural forms through simple lines. Using heated and bent steel rods\, she creates intricate\, three-dimensional drawings that convey the materials’ lightness and strength. Welz’s process is intuitive\, building piece upon piece to form weightless yet substantial structures. Highlighted is the fragility of our environment and the impact of human actions\, inviting viewers to explore the complex relationship between nature and humanity. \nDeborah Winiarski holds a Master’s degree from Queens College\, and she studied at the Art Students League of New York\, where she has been an esteemed instructor since 2009. Known for her innovative use of fabric and color to create raised\, textured surfaces\, Winiarski continues to push the boundaries of visual art exploring the intricate relationships between light\, shadow\, color\, line\, and edge. Renowned for her unique approach to mixed-media relief paintings\, her work employs a variety of processes\, including printmaking\, painting\, drawing\, sewing\, and mark-making. SUMMARY:2022-2023 NBAS Artist Awards Virtual Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Award Ceremony: August 8th\, 2024\, 6:30-9 pm\nAlfa Art Gallery is delighted to invite you to “The Virtual Ceremony” for the New Brunswick Art Salon 2022 and 2023 Cycle Award Winners\, judged by our esteemed panel of curatorial interns. With expertise in art-making\, graphic design\, art history\, and more\, our interns offer professional and credible evaluations. The event will announce the first\, second\, and third-place award winners\, along with honorable mentions.  \n For the past 14 years\, the annual New Brunswick Art Salon has cultivated relationships between artists and art enthusiasts from New Jersey and the surrounding tri-state area. This August\, a special event will highlight the winners from exhibitions in 2022 and 2023\, celebrating their achievements and showcasing their exceptional work.  \n The 2022 cycle began with the photography exhibit “Interchangeable Lens: Frame of Mind\,” which ran from January to March. This exhibit included images capturing the world in diverse and unified ways\, presenting fine art photographers with unique perspectives and approaches to photography.  \n From April to August\, the Oil\, Sculpture\, and Mixed Media exhibit “Beyond the Brush: The Contemporary Imagination” showcased contemporary artists pushing the boundaries of oil and mixed media. The selected abstract and figurative artworks offered immersive landscapes of contemporary imagination.  \n The final exhibition\, “After the Charm: In the Name of Autumn\,” ran from October to January 2023 and featured works in watercolor and mixed media. This exhibit highlighted the essence of autumn\, inviting viewers to savor the qualities of the changing season.  \nIn 2023\, the photography exhibit “Refracted: Shade and Light” ran from January to March. This exhibit featured thirteen remarkable artists\, each with diverse backgrounds and inspirations\, showcasing a wide array of photographic approaches. The display highlighted unique techniques that led to powerful visual storytelling and stunning impressions.  \nFollowing the winter photography exhibition in this NBAS cycle was “Close to Home\,” the oil\, sculpture\, and mixed media show and it was open from August until October. From oil paint to textile\, each artist presented their own innovative approach to both the traditional medium of oil paint and mixed media art in order to capture their visions of the contemporary world.  \nShortly after\, on October 24\, the watercolor and mixed media show “See the Forest for the Trees” opened and would run until January 2024. Vesselin Kourtev is an internationally acclaimed fine artist with nearly 40 years of professional experience. In this solo exhibition\, Kourtev showcases his classic style of bold abstract impressionism\, which invites us to explore the diverse interpersonal relationships that humans form. His unique style stands out\, having garnered praise from esteemed critics\, fellow artists\, and high-profile members of society. Maurice Taplinger\, a writer for Gallery & Studio magazine\, comments on Kourtev’s artwork by writing\, “… the abstract elements in his canvases are as convincing as the visual metaphors he creates which is what makes the paintings of Vesselin Kourtev succeed on several levels simultaneously.” \nResonance explores how colors blend\, bleed\, and cross one another’s boundaries to create a specific narrative. The paint throughout this series drips with spontaneity\, which allows the canvas to take on a shape of its own. Kourtev’s paintings feature intricately drawn figures that appear ghostlike as they fade into the canvas. Themes of interpersonal relationships\, human connection\, and deep emotion permeate every piece. The intention behind each painting is to encourage the audience to explore broader concepts of existence and to identify nuances through the abstraction of this series. While Resonance shares similarities with previous cycles\, it ultimately stands alone\, as Kourtev incorporates elements of three-dimensionality\, spontaneity\, and paint splatter. His impressive evolution as an artist is evident based on the innovative techniques he employs throughout Resonance. \nWith a high level of education and notable global exhibitions\, Kourtev’s professional status as an artist precedes him. In his native country of Bulgaria\, he earned his high school diploma from the Fine Art School in Kazanlak and subsequently obtained his MFA from the University of Veliko Tarnovo. Since 1987\, Kourtev’s work has been featured in 34 independent exhibitions and 15 collective exhibitions across Europe and North America. Some of these countries include Bulgaria\, the USA\, the Czech Republic\, Greece\, the Netherlands\, Belgium\, Germany\, France\, Switzerland\, Turkey\, and more. \nVesselin Kourtev founded the Alfa Art Gallery in 2007 after immigrating to the United States with his family in 2002. He has served as the Head Arts Director ever since. The art salon will spotlight a diverse collection of images from both emerging talents and seasoned photographers\, presenting a blend of creative perspectives and abstract storytelling. Each photograph serves as a window into the artists’ unique visions; as viewers interpret and connect with the work\, their engagement will provoke conversation and introspection that cannot be replicated through technology. \n“The Art of Perspective” is the newest exhibition in the over-decade-long tradition of Alfa’s New Brunswick Art Salon (NBAS) program. Alfa Art Gallery invites you to join us for another captivating showing of talents from fine artists near and far\, located at 108 Church Street\, New Brunswick\, open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. \nFeatured photographers: Anthony Buccino\, Arik Gorban\, Cheryl Bomba\, Danny Froyen\, David Anderson\, Dennis Maida\, Dwight Hiscano\, Frederick Ballet\, Kay Kenny\, Samuel Vovsi\, Tsveta Ubcheva \nAnthony Buccino is a writer\, editor\, and photographer based in Nutley\, New Jersey. He began his photography journey by shooting film for the stories he produced while working for local newspapers. As such\, each of his photographs aims to tell a story\, powerfully highlighting unique everyday subjects through different points of perspective. Buccino’s eye for capturing scenes with differing shapes and overlapping patterns establishes a sense of rhythm within his works that encourages viewers’ eyes to traverse throughout the image. \nArik Gorban has been immersed in the world of photography from a very young age. As both a photographer and an instructor of photography\, he devotes his work to exploring the creative facets of the medium. Gorban’s process encompasses film photography\, darkroom work\, and extensive digital image editing that come together to produce images that are reflective of his feelings and interpretation of the subject. The many techniques he implements are visible throughout his works\, incorporating elements of motion and space that create intriguing compositions. Gorban’s pieces maintain an air of mystery and anomaly that almost entices viewers to step into each photo and explore the scene. \nCheryl Bomba began her photography career as a special education teacher\, photographing portraits of her students with autism. Today\, her main subjects of interest include small moments from life found in nature\, architecture\, and sculpture\, which she then adds her own creative vision to. She achieves harmony in her pieces through her use of color\, rhythm\, and proportion\, thus creating new perspectives on everyday subjects. In addition to creating her own work\, Bomba strives to help other photographers achieve their visions as well\, as the instructor of “iPhonography at Ellarslie\,” a hands-on course that teaches the basics and creative potential of photography via the iPhone. \nDanny Froyen is a Belgian-born violinist and photographer\, whose unconventional style of photography reflects that of abstract paintings. Froyen accomplishes his goal of “raising the ordinary to the extraordinary” by capturing subjects from everyday life and portraying them from a new perspective. The colors and light of nature combine with digitally edited abstract forms to create painterly compositions that invite us to experience Froyen’s vision and full spectrum of emotions. His recent series\, “Decayed to Reclaimed” emphasizes this\, by aiming to combine the melancholy of music with the beauty of nature. \nDavid Anderson searches for abstraction in representation. Based in Hopewell\, New Jersey\, Anderson also served as the President of The Princeton Photography Club. Objects become unrecognizable in Anderson’s compositions\, as the contrast between the individual shapes and objects forms edges in which new patterns and systems can be witnessed and unveil the principle elements of design present in the world surrounding us. Furthermore\, the materiality of these objects too becomes unfamiliar\, challenging our understanding of what an object is and where it comes from. \nFrederick Ballet transforms the natural world into surreal and otherworldly landscapes in his photographic works. Based in New Jersey and New York\, Ballet worked as an orthopedic surgeon and at his own hand surgery practice for 35 years before his retirement. His photos almost resemble paintings in how soft the colors and the border between the sky and the ocean are. The connection between the physical realm and the psyche is the inspiration behind Ballet’s works\, which utilize digital manipulation and other interferences of the artist’s hand to show more than what is visible to the eye. \nDennis Maida first discovered photography in 2008 in New Orleans while serving in the U.S. military\, with the medium serving as both grounding and therapeutic force for him and his then undiagnosed PTSD. He was quickly driven to landscape and astrophotography but has also explored various other genres within the medium. Clarity and focus are the key elements in Maida’s works. While his photographs depict various subjects\, each image’s composition is organized to clearly highlight every individual part within the larger narrative captured in his photos. Alongside his professional work\, Maida founded the f/22 project\, an organization supporting veterans with PTSD through photography. \nDwight Hiscano has documented various natural and urban landscapes through photography for many years\, traveling across various parts of the world and partaking in conservation practices. An atypical approach is used in his award-winning photograph series\, “Trees From Above”\, where Hiscano uses a drone lens to capture black and white photos of the trees from a bird’s eye view. The striking composition of the works in this series put the dark\, vein-like branches of the tree right against the snow-white background\, evoking imagery of biological systems such as organs and cells and comparing those systems to the role of trees for the planet. \nKay Kenny is a painter\, photographer\, writer\, and educator based in the New Jersey and New York area. She has taught for over 25 years at the New York University and the International Center of Photography in New York City as a photography professor and has written for several artists’ magazines. Her works are dream-like in their color and composition. The relationship between life and waste is documented in intimate close-ups through Kenny’s pigment photographic prints\, “Lips of the Sea\,” an ongoing series capturing the flora and fauna that live down in the seabed. \nSamuel Vovsi was originally a mathematics professor and computer programmer; however\, he has since redirected his attention to his long-lasting passion for photography in the past few years. His most recent works explore space and distortion through a series of black and white photos depicting an unusual city and its inhabitants. Buildings and the very streets of this city are blurred and muddied\, extending their presence across the composition while bringing attention to the various figures that inhabit this surreal space. \nTsveta Ubcheva is a Bulgarian artist specializing in various fields and disciplines who uses art as a connecting device between the individual and the universe. She applies her chemical engineering background to her art practice\, believing that everything in nature influences each other and thus is open to change. In creating works that directly engage with the viewer\, Ubcheva explores Dr. David Hawkin’s theory on human consciousness and its layers through her photographic series\, “Levels of Consciousness. \nOpening Receptions: The in-person opening reception will be open to the public\, we hope to see you\, your friends and family on Friday\, February 9 th at 6:30pm. Currently\, she holds the positions of Associate Professor of Fine Arts and Director of the First Year Program at the Parsons School of Design in New York City. Bradshaw received her training as an illustrator and graphic designer at the School of Visual Arts in New York\, where she earned her Masters of Fine Arts\, Visual Arts and Illustration. The current president of the Brooklyn Watercolor Society\, Bradshaw uses watercolor as a medium to create depth\, translucency\, and opacity. She thinks of her paintings as single-frame narratives that serve as windows into the subject. Her artwork is linked by repeated formal concerns as well as through its conceptual content. \nHana Aviv is an artist based in New Brunswick\, NJ. She started her career in New York City with a biology degree and a dream of being an artist\, which she then manifested into reality. She dedicated her evenings to taking countless classes at the Montclair Art Museum\, where she was able to channel her love for watercolors\, eventually going on to study at the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University. Aviv is an active member of the Garden State Watercolor Society\, New Jersey Watercolor Society\, and Essex County Watercolor Club and a veteran of the Alfa Art Gallery. She takes inspiration for her paintings from the world around her\, especially the soothing elements found in nature. Her watercolor art aims to evoke feelings of serenity by emphasizing the vibrant colors\, intricate patterns\, and beautiful shapes of nature. \nIndrani Choudhury is an Edison-based artist born in Calcutta\, India. Dr. Choudhury was a biomedical research scientist for over 25 years who returned to her childhood passion of painting in 2006 and hasn’t looked back since. Today\, she is a full-time watercolor artist whose paintings have been exhibited at over a dozen juried art shows and galleries throughout New Jersey. Her paintings span her whole universe\, from her local supermarket in New Jersey\, to her childhood home in Calcutta\, to scenes from travels around the world; she paints to communicate the way she sees the world. A current member of the Philadelphia Watercolor Society\, Garden State Watercolor Society\, New Jersey Watercolor Society\, and Suburban Artists Guild\, Choudhury acts as an inspiration to all those who dream of doing what they truly love. Her works are an affirmation of the power of dreams\, long deferred and finally fulfilled. \nJill Vondervor-Frank finds joy in creating for remembrance. She reignited her passion for art after retiring from the business world\, developing her craft at the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey\, New York School of Visual Arts\, du Cret School of Arts\, South Orange-Maplewood Adult Night School\, and the School of Advertising Art. An exhibiting member and of the Essex Watercolor Club\, North East Watercolor Society\, Garden State Watercolor Society\, and Drew Art Association\, Vondervor-Frank continues to enhance her skills by working alongside other talented artists. Drawn to interesting scenes from everyday life\, her inspiration comes from her surrounding environment\, even keeping a camera in the car to capture just that something in a scene that stimulates her creativity. Through the use of gently differing hues\, shapes\, and patterns\, she is able to depict cohesive images of striking memories that stood out to her. \nJoel Popadics is based in Wayne\, New Jersey\, and has been a professional artist for over 30 years\, receiving his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts in New York. His emotionally evoking watercolors have been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in galleries and museums across the United States\, including previously exhibiting at the Alfa Art Gallery. He is a member of the New Jersey Water Color Society and current Vice President of the prestigious American Watercolor Society in New York City. An advocate of watercolor\, Popadics has dedicated his career to the advancement and appreciation of the medium\, teaching and leading various workshops and lectures throughout the Northeast. By painting en plein air\, he is able to paint scenes exactly as he sees them\, paying special attention to the emotional effects of light. His “less is more” mentality encourages his love for hazy scenes of fog and mist\, finding satisfaction in his work when he is able to portray the feeling of air. \nKaren Starrett is a visual artist based in Ocean Grove\, New Jersey\, at the Jersey Shore Arts Center. Her main focus is on self expression through the use of collage\, paint\, and mixed media\, finding the appeal of each medium in its physicality. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from the Douglass College at Rutgers University and is an alumnus of the School of Visual Arts in New York. As a working artist\, certified art teacher\, and dementia practitioner Starrett facilitates art workshops in adult care communities. Her love of personal imagery and the use of paper\, paint\, and mixed media as the foundation of her curriculum\, is a continuation of her life as an artist. Her love for collage allows her to transform pre-used printed papers\, solid colors\, and remnants of past paintings into a new context that holds personal meaning for her. \nKaren Terry practices the art of Sumi-e\, a Japanese ink wash technique meant to stimulate the imagination. Her educational background includes both traditional studies and creative process work\, having studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from the Thomas Edison State University. She has exhibited her work in countless museums and galleries across the tri-state area. Although her use of sumi ink is a departure from the classical Eastern brush painting form\, Terry’s techniques enable her to work with space\, form\, ambiance and energy to create soft\, low light images of an environment. She finds inspiration in the change of seasons and simple natural images\, which she records as landscapes that tap into both visual and sensory memory. She creates low light scenes to inspire perception in viewers\, sensing objects and space as a different reality than when fully illuminated. \nMark de Mos views each painting as a puzzle\, an endeavor to find the right approach of color and design to create a personal statement within one moment in time. Currently based in Morristown\, New Jersey\, he has spent his whole career expanding his knowledge and studying with numerous artists and exhibiting his work across the tri-state area\, including previously at the Alfa Art Gallery. He is a signature member of countless organizations\, including the New Jersey Watercolor Society\, Garden State Watercolor Society\, North East Watercolor Society\, and Baltimore Watercolor Society. De Mos finds the most joy in watercolor\, finding his greatest purpose in producing lifelike art that creates movement through color\, light and multiple centers of interest. His use of color\, differing washes\, and brushstrokes come together to perfectly capture a subject’s essence. \nMedha Atre-Kulkarni was born in Mumbai\, India with a passion for art. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Sir J.J. School of Art in Mumbai\, subsequently immigrating to the United States and shifting her career focus from animation to painting and art education. A mother of two\, she recognizes the importance of practicing self-care\, creating within her time\, responsibility\, energy and wellbeing limits to ensure she makes the most beautiful art out of her life in every aspect. Atre-Kulkarni’s vivid use of color adds an element of life and earnest emotion to her pieces\, meant to inspire creativity and happiness in her audience. She paints beautiful subjects that move her emotionally\, utilizing her art as the purest form of divine expression. \nMedy Bozkurtian is a Bulgarian-born pianist and artist who immigrated to the United States to study at the Juilliard School of Music and the Art Students League of New York. Her work has been exhibited at many prominent galleries throughout the tri-state area. Through the use of expressive realism\, impressionism\, and abstract expressionism\, she is able to represent the true spirit of her subjects\, exhibiting feelings of blissful tranquility. Bozkurtian’s life is encompassed by art\, with music playing a key role in her creative process. She paints how music makes her feel\, as represented by her more abstract pieces. Her love of music\, people\, and nature has a clear influence on her work\, inspiring her to gracefully blend her subjects and background\, creating patterns like a rhythmic measure of flowing notes. \nMichael Price was born in Stoke-on-Trent\, England\, where he studied at the Stoke-on-Trent College of Art\, later earning his Bachelor of Arts degree at the London Central School of Art and Design. Throughout his career\, he has worked on countless research projects and led numerous lectures worldwide. Price has also exhibited at esteemed galleries both in the United States and internationally. The primary focus of his work is on mythological and psychological archetypes which expose and encompass the innumerable facets of the human condition\, inspired by the writings of C.G. Jung and Paul Tillich. His medium of choice is natural mineral pigments\, which are hand-ground and prepared from crystals\, rocks and natural dyes\, a nod to the palettes of Renaissance painters. \nPamela Agin is a contemporary collage artist who embraces abstraction\, based in New Jersey. She develops her artistic expression with the creation of each new piece. She creates free from expectation\, using her creative process as inspiration and spiritedly coming up with new ideas as her piece takes shape. Her process starts well in advance to the actual creation of each piece\, collecting different papers and prints that stimulate her imagination. She utilizes contrasting colors and patterns that entice her audience to deeply analyze a piece’s composition. Following the assembly\, she adds hand drawn or painted marks and splatters of paint or ink that complement distinct elements of her collage. Agin creates for the journey\, rather than the destination. \nPeggy Dressel is a New Jersey-based fine artist and illustrator. She has studied at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn\, the National Academy of Design in New York\, and Moore College of Art & Design in Philadelphia. She has participated in many exhibitions in galleries and museums throughout the tri-state area\, and is an elected member of the Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club\, New Jersey Watercolor Society\, Degas Pastel Society\, American Artist Professional League\, and Art Center of Northern New Jersey Watercolor Association. Her realistic watercolor works feature transparent washes of changing complimentary colors to produce a light\, airy\, and luminous effect on her subjects. With this sense of light and value in mind\, she intends to evoke specific moods in her viewers. \nRy An died\, briefly\, when he was 23 and claimed to have had an out of body experience in the process. He left the United States shortly after\, spending the next 11 years traveling throughout rural Japan\, painting nearly 1\,000 post-impressionist landscapes en plein air. After returning to the United States to study illustration and receive his Masters of Fine Arts\, he shifted gears towards creating a series of narrative paintings and recycled paper sculptures featuring vulnerable characters in allegorically fraught situations. He takes inspiration from his own past traumatic experiences as a coping method\, creating something beautiful from something tragic. His pieces connect to tell his unique story through colorfully represented real-life terrors in an engaging stylized manner. \nSharon Paisner is based in Cherry Hill\, New Jersey\, and has been a full-time artist since her retirement from the education field. A member of the New Jersey Water Color Society\, she has studied alongside talented artists while developing and growing her skills through many different workshops. She is drawn to the flowing properties of watercolor painting and how it imitates and describes nature in its remarkable spontaneity. Her use of layers of colors\, pattern\, and texture create impressionistic\, fantasy-like still-life and landscape scenes. Flowers are a recurring theme in Paisner’s works. Maureen has been included in various global connecting art projects as well as exhibiting her works throughout the east coast. \nRodrigo Brasil is an oil painter who takes inspiration from the ‘simple things’ in life. He is based in Brazil.\nRodrigo was an arts teacher from 2009-2011\, then\, in 2016\, he founded his own school\, Atelie 50\, where he teaches arts and philosophy. \nAs a recent graduate from their masters degree of Urban Planning from USC in 2021\, Abigail Sobotka/Briner has taken what they have learned and utilized it to be an active member of their community. Her art style focuses on colors\, patterns and textures to convey various symbols. She draws upon the urban environment of various cities for her artworks. \nThe Northern Georgia-based oil painter Michael Hanna finds his art in the silent\, meditative moments of life. His painting style allows for the viewer to see movement in a scene that is otherwise still.\nHe has exhibited throughout Northeastern US\, including a solo exhibition in Chelsea at the Wix Gallery and an exhibit at Hogarth Worldwide in midtown Manhattan. \nCarol Heft is a teacher and current writer for High Art Fridays. She considers time fluid\, and applies this to her works; Carol will\, at times\, leave an art piece and finish it later after the passing of time. Carol has exhibited various times at the Blue Mountain Gallery in NYC\, and taught many classes at Muhlenberg College in Allentown\, PA. \nAfter growing up in the Konkan region of India\, Mayur Kadu‘s family relocated to New Jersey where his artist career took flight. He thinks fondly on his birthplace and the beauty that it held\, and with this appreciation of nature he is able to translate a scene into paint. Mayur believes that nature reflects life\, as his life philosophy is centered around nature. He has exhibited many times in Mumbai\, Maharashtra\, India. \nTeriz Michael began working with abstraction in her works once she went through her life of being a mother and an educator. She is inspired by childhood\, specifically\, her own children\, to capture an innocent\, free\, lively look in her work. Teriz graduated with a BFA in Fine Arts in 2003\, and was born and raised in Cairo\, Egypt until the second grade. \nSylvia Padilla reflects on the history of Central and South America as well as her own culture through the integration of various imagery\, textile patterns\, Gods\, and Idols from Aztec and Maya culture into her paintings. She was inspired to identify her sense of self throughout the 2020 pandemic\, and this discovery shows itself in her pieces. She is based in Elizabeth\, New Jersey and holds a Bachelors of Fine Arts from Rutgers University. \nThe Indian-born American self-taught artist Richa Rashmi has centered herself in creation all her life. She began working as a full-time artist in 2020. Richa uses acrylic and watercolor to create various styles: abstract\, modern\, contemporary and folk-art. Her connection to art is raw and spiritual. She has exhibited various times throughout 2023 in NYC and NJ. \nDoug Rizio‘s digital artworks draw together the mythical and virtual world in a vibrant\, never-before-seen way. An art curator and web designer himself\, Doug has experience with both traditional art and the niche art style of glitch art. \nJoel Rudin is an abstract artist who takes inspiration from the real world to create his own imaginary mystical landscapes. Joel is inspired by the unknown of what lay above the atmosphere\, and through his artwork he explores what may be out there in the cosmos. His background in comic art inspires him to incorporate the look of magazine photo or newspaper into his work. \nEdward Ruggieri is an oil painter based in New Jersey who has an affinity for landscape painting. Edward plays with memories\, for example\, he enjoys taking a popular scenic landscape from his community and interpolating it into his artworks; not a direct copy\, but rather\, an inspiration. He has exhibited with Alfa in 2018. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts\, Master of Arts in Teacher\, and a Doctorate in Education. \nClifford Thompson describes his work as autobiographical; he draws upon his own niche interests and obsessions\, ranging from literature and music to hats\, whiskey\, and his own childhood. Clifford reflects his life as a black man through his outlets of nonfiction writing and art creating. He is a frequent exhibitor at the Blue Mountain Gallery in New York\, New York\, as well as a long time published author. \nThe painter-turned-sculptor Jennifer Toth draws influence from her mother\, who taught her to appreciate her own experience and have a strong imagination\, as well as her sons innocent love of art\, unhindered by any societal expectation. One inspiration of Jenny’s sculptures was a parrot named El Chapo in San Miguel de Allende\, Mexico. She created a paper mache copy of him\, and has since worked on a paper mache zoo. Jenny graduated from Yale School of Art in 1998\, and currently has a solo show at Blue Mountain Gallery\, NY. \nAs an international artist\, living and traveling in Africa\, England\, France and the US\, Ann Vollum focuses on organic life\, sustainably creating naturalistic sculptures out of recycled and repurposed cloth. She focuses not only on visible life\, but also molecular structure. She utilized various dyed and colored fabrics for her pieces. Ann has an extensive exhibitive history\, in New Jersey and New York\, and holds a BA in Architectural Studies from Newcastle University.

Her recent works are in response to the accelerating changes of her backyard and woodlands in the larger context of the global climate crisis. Maureen had her first solo show\, “Transcendent Faces”\, at Borghi Fine Art Gallery. She has exhibited at Historic Walnford\, Monmouth County Park\, Alfa Gallery\, New Brunswick\, NJ\, Monmouth Museum\, Lincroft\, NJ\, Site: Brooklyn Gallery\, NYC\, and at the Cultural Alliance of Western CT. She was the Artist-in-Residence 2021 for Oyster Point Hotel\, Red Bank\, NJ. Maureen is an educator and advocate for the arts who makes connections between global communities. She was the creator of the global traveling art project “Peace by Piece”\, involving thousands of participants creating paintings and writings of personal expression about peace. She was the recipient of the NYC Circle of Mercy Award and has been awarded numerous grants to support art as a transformative force for social change in some of the poorest areas of the country. She leads art workshops for all ages in NYC and NJ about education\, earth awareness\, nonviolence\, wellness and peace. Maureen started her career in NYC as an Art Director in the retail\, music and non-profit industries. \nRodrigo Brasil is graduated from Federal University of Minas Gerais and received his master’s degree in philosophy from FAJE\, Faculadade Jesuita and is a self-taught plastic artist. He participated in several prestigious national exhibitions such as 7th Salon of Visual Arts of Guarulhos in 2007\, Individual Exhibition “Night in the Mountains” at the Se Station\, a solo exhibition “Charcaras” at the Centro de Cultura Brasil Estados Unidos\, and internationally as a group exhibition in New York Brazilian Endowment for the Arts in August 2011. He worked as a painting and drawing teacher at Maison Escola de Arte from 2009-2011. Effective professor of visual arts at the Fundacao Municipal de Cultura in the Arena Cultura program\, teaching at the Artistic Training Center and at cultural centers in Belo Horizonte and in 2016 he founded his own school Atelie 50\, where he teaches not only painting and drawing courses\, but art history\, philosophy of art\, and mythology. The school has gained great prestige and has trained a large number of artists and features them in art fairs and exhibitions. \nAbigail Sobotka-Briner is a community organizer\, artist\, and spatial strategist based in Philadelphia with a passion for shifting our collective perspective to prioritize care and equity. They hold a Master’s degree in urban planning from the University of Southern California and a BA in architectural studies and studio arts from the University of Pittsburgh. Abigail is a founding member of Rising Tide Collective\, a queer and trans-led artist collective that aims to disrupt the status quo of creative spaces through the sharing of resources\, audiences\, skills\, and experiences in the tri-state area. In their works\, Aby draws inspiration from both the urban and natural environment and the interactions that happen in and between them\, exploring the relationship between memories and identity\, making as a process of healing\, and the juxtaposition between rigid form and the human figure. \nMichael Hanna comes from Jersey City\, New Jersey and has been drawing and painting since the age of eight. He has exhibited extensively in the Northeastern United States and has been featured in large exhibition spaces such as the Victoria Gallery in Paterson\, NJ and the Atrium Gallery in Morristown\, NJ. Michael has been published by the New York Times\, Hartford Courant\, Daily Record\, Jersey Journal\, and other publications. His work focuses on loose\, expressive brushwork and vivid colors to create an aesthetic of painting. His works reflect the physical world\, showing interaction between the natural world and the society that interacts with it. Currently\, Michael works in Northern Georgia in his historic art studio. \nCarol Heft studied drawing and painting with Robert Brackman\, N.A. in Madison\, CT. She later attended the Rhode Island School of Design where she earned a B.F.A and Hunter College\, M.Ed. She currently teaches at Muhlenberg College\, and Cedar Crest College and St. Joseph’s College. Carol has had several solo shows at the Blue Mountain Gallery in NYC where she is a gallery artist. Her work has been exhibited internationally and across the United States. Her work is “figurative” with many associations to the natural world. For her\, visual elements seem to have acoustic properties. Carol’s work is a product of accumulated experiences with materials\, what she sees around her\, and her under-standing of nature and the history of art. She like to move back and forth in time to find inspiration\, and find the transformation of two dimensions into three\, endlessly fascinating. Carol Heft currently lives and works in New York City and Bethlehem\, PA. \nMayur Kadu was born in the Konkan region of India\, and the nature of this region is the biggest influence for him. His current works relate the philosophy of life with nature\, specifically\, the connection he found between mist and human life. He recalls hiking when he moved to Seattle\, WA in 2018 first coming across the ‘Mist’ that he uses in many of his works. He believes that life has a similarity to mist: “In life we don’t know what we are going to face the next movement it’s all foggy. But when the time comes\, life revels it’s secretes to you. All we need to do is to keep walking with positive spirit.” \nTeriz Michael is a licensed therapist and local professional artist who loves to express the complex and delightful experiences of life in a unique and colorful abstract style. Teriz was born in Cairo\, Egypt and grew up in Jersey City\, NJ. Her intensive studies in art began at the Visual & Performing Arts High School Magnet Program in Jersey City. She earned a Silas Rhodes Scholarship at the School of Visual Arts in New York City\, NY and graduated in 2003 with a BFA in Fine Arts.  In May 2022\, Teriz completed her MSW degree from Rutgers University with an emphasis on clinical practice. She has painted murals in Jersey City\, NJ and at St. Simon Monastery in Moqattam\, Cairo. Her work in the Zaballeen community of Moqattam paved the way for connecting with Zana Briski (2004 Oscar Winner of “Born Into Brothels”) who awarded Teriz a grant to lead the Kids With Cameras Photography Workshop in Moqattam during 2006. The Kids With Cameras Cairo Photography Workshop opened the door for collaboration with Mai Iskander on her award-winning documentary film “Garbage Dreams”.  Memory\, emotion\, consciousness\, relationships\, life events\, and spirituality serve as references for her abstract works of art. Her art education experience includes teaching art in public\, charter\, non-profit\, and private schools. Teriz is a certified art teacher and academic social worker in New Jersey. Teriz has exhibited her artwork in solo and group art shows throughout the tri-state area for over 20 years. \nSylvia Padilla is an acrylic and mixed media artist living and working in Elizabeth\, New Jersey. Born in Newark\, NJ\, she grew up and studied in the Newark\, NJ region of Essex County. Sylvia Padilla has a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from Rutgers University in New Jersey obtained in 2009 with a concentration in acrylic painting and illustration. She has been creating artworks for the past 20 plus years. Her works have been exhibited in the Northern NJ region and in NYC. Sylvia Padilla’s paintings vary from abstract expressionist\, figurative life forms\, to surrealist depictions. Primarily\, the works are acrylic on canvas\, but some works have used fabric and mixed materials in the past. After having taken a hiatus of 7 years from promoting her artwork\, the artist is seeking to re-establish herself in the Newark art scene and surrounding areas. Currently\, the theme in the paintings she’s created are related to Incan imagery\, animals of folklore in Native traditions such as leopards and ravens. The most recent works have also dealt with the present Coronavirus crisis and being an essential employee dealing with the meaning of being essential and also the finding of faith in the hardest times. \nRicha Rashmi is an Indian born American self-taught artist. She has been painting since her childhood under her father’s loving guidance. She spent most of her childhood creating small art and craft projects. While she has been painting for many years\, Richa formally started working as a full-time professional artist from 2020. It has been an incredible journey ever since for her. Richa’s paintings are inspired by the emotions\, feelings\, moods\, nature\, life events and experiences. She creates abstract\, modern\, contemporary and folk-art using acrylics and watercolor. She paints every single day\, and it really makes her happy. As per her\, daily art practice is a very essential part of an artist’s life\, it is pure\, evocative as well as sensitive. She loves to experiment with different materials and techniques in her paintings\, along with experimenting in all mediums and styles. She doesn’t like to restrict herself with a particular style and subject\, rather loves experimenting and developing her own techniques to give her work an individual and personal expression. She has commissioned paintings for private individuals and produced artworks for companies too. She shipped her artworks in the United States\, Canada\, United Kingdom\, Netherlands\, India\, and Australia. \nDoug Rizio is an artist\, web developer\, and data scientist based in New Jersey. He has a BA in Visual Art from Rutgers University and an MS in Data Science from the New Jersey Institute of Technology. Inspired by glitch art\, pixel graphics\, and computer codes\, he combines technical aesthetics with traditional artistry to produce drawings\, paintings\, and multimedia projects that closely resemble digital images or integrate electronic components such as blacklights\, LED’s\, and recycled circuit boards. His primary project is “Glitchcraft\,” a science fiction fantasy art series about simulation theory and spiritual awakening. \nJoel Rudin studied at the Sarah Lawrence College from 1974-1976\, before going on to study comic book illustration in 1984. Working mainly in pastel\, but also combining oil pastel\, graphite\, chine marker or water color\, Rudin works to create imaginary\, mystical landscapes in veiled and muted tones with a sense of vastness and space\, faraway vistas\, other planets and alternate worlds. Rudin is also a web designer and developer with professional experience as a musician\, visual arts\, cartoonist\, and graphic designer. His artwork has been exhibited in countless exhibitions across the nation over the years\, including Alfa Art Gallery three times before during our 2021-2022\, 2016 and 2014-2015 salons and art shows. \nEdward Ruggieri is a New Jersey based oil painter focusing on landscape. He attended Montclair State University for a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts degree\, as well as a Masters of Arts in Teaching and Doctorate in Education. Oil paint allows him the opportunity to blend colors\, to achieve tonal ranges\, subtle shifts in value\, and a velvety texture that suits my aesthetic goal. Painting in oil\, he has the added ability to easily return to a work of art to rework a piece when a new memory arises\, as his landscapes are amalgamations of memories of a variety of hiking trips\, fishing trips\, and road trips in recent memory and feelings of those beloved family outings from childhood. His work has been exhibited in numerous galleries\, shows\, and he a multi-recipient of the Leopold Schepp Foundation Scholarship. He is currently a teacher of art in the Westfield School district. \nClifford Thompson is a Brooklyn\, New York–based visual artist and writer born and raised in Washington\, DC. He attended Oberlin College for a Bachelor’s in English and Creative Writing. For over a dozen years he served as the editor of Current Biography\, and he has taught creative nonfiction writing at The Bennington Writing Seminars\, Sarah Lawrence College\, Columbia University\, Queens College\, and New York University. Since 2015 he has been a fellow of the New York Institute for the Humanities. His published books—most of whose covers feature his own artwork—include Love for Sale and Other Essays (2013)\, which won the 2013 Whiting Writers’ Award for nonfiction; Twin of Blackness: A Memoir (2015); and What It Is: Race\, Family\, and One Thinking Black Man’s Blues (2019). Clifford’s current works in acrylic represent his interests and obsessions: literature\, film\, music\, hats\, whiskey\, and especially his childhood. His work can thus be said to be autobiographical. As a child he was inspired by comics\, which helped form his visual sensibility. Most of the human subjects of his paintings are Black; the paintings emphasize their humanity more than their Blackness. Since 2020\, he has been a member of Blue Mountain Gallery\, in New York. \nJennifer Toth lives and works from her home and studio in Manhattan\, and on occasion you may even see her drawing at the zoo. She is an Associate Professor of Art at Wagner College\, where she has been teaching painting\, drawing\, and other creative adventures since 1999. Jenny has also taught at Smith College and SUNY Potsdam. Jenny received her B.A. from Smith College in 1994 and her M.F.A. from Yale School of Art in 1998. She attended Yale from 1994-1995 and then took a two-year hiatus and attended The New York Studio School from 1995-1997 returning to Yale in 1997-1998. She has traveled solo extensively\, many of her travels have inspired her work. She lives with her two sons\, husband\, and her elderly rescue dogs Muppet and Mr. Scruffles. She strives to find adventure regularly. \nAnn Vollum is a New Jersey fiber and mixed media artist with an international background\, born in Africa\, she has lived in Africa\, England\, France and the USA and has travelled widely. She studied to be an architect and then worked as an art director and graphic designer in London and New York City. Ann’s artistic journey has progressed through painting\, line drawing\, book making\, fantastical and detailed “paper cuts” to handstitched textiles and fiber sculptures. Ann is honored to have been juried into the 2023\, New Jersey Arts Annual\, Noyes Museum\, Stockton University; the 2022 New Jersey Arts Annual\, New Jersey State Museum\, Trenton; the 2022 14C Art Fair Showcase\, Jersey City and in 2020 The Gold Standard of Textile and Fiber Art\, West Beth Gallery\, New York. Her work has been exhibited widely and featured in various publications. In September 2022\, she was interviewed by Canvas Rebel. On March 25th at 6:30 pm\, the Alfa Ary Gallery invites the community to enjoy the solo exhibition “Chasing Memories: A Vesselin Retrospective.” Vesselin showcases new and past artworks in this upcoming exhibit\, producing an entirely new concept of discernible freedom and fluidity. Vesselin invites the public to create their interpretation of his work and unique retrospective. \nVesselin’s subject matter includes the human form\, capturing human relationships and interactions in global and personal dimensions. His work takes on an abstract style\, creating environmental reconstruction. The state of the figures conveys Vesselin’s message\, and their faces are reinforced with reserved gestures and movements. He was born in Bulgaria\, an ancient country with a rich artistic and cultural heritage\, which greatly influenced his work. Vesselin’s inventive use of mixed media effectively communicates subtle\, sensitive\, and sometimes humorous messages. \nWith over 30 years of experience as a professional fine art artist\, Vesselin Kourtev is an internationally acclaimed artist who has exhibited in New York\, Berlin\, Antwerp\, Geneva\, and Prague. He graduated from the Faculty of Fine Art at the University of Veliko Turnovo\, Bulgaria. From 1989 until 2002\, he worked in the Art School of Scenography\, Plovdiv\, and took part in the artistic life of Bulgaria and participated in numerous one-man shows and international exhibitions. He came to America in 2009 and settled in New Jersey with his family. DESCRIPTION:Exhibition Duration: September 1\, 2022 – October 23\, 2022 \nVirtual Opening Reception: September 13\, 2022 6:30pm   \nIn-Person Reception: September 16\, 2022 6:30pm  \nOn Tuesday\, September 13th\, the walls of Alfa Art gallery will be gracefully displaying Iliyan Ivanov’s solo exhibition “The Way Things Come About.”  \nCascades of free-flowing shapes\, vivid hues\, and fractalized lines are transformed into surreal set-pieces through the artwork of Bulgarian-born artist Iliyan Ivanov. Through rough brushstrokes and overlapping layers of opaque paint\, Ivanov creates chaotic compositions that invite the eye to discover patterns through intimate observation. In his past works\, Ivanov played with how spatial relationships between objects can change a viewer’s interpretation.  \nIn this exhibition entitled “The Way Things Come About“\, Ivanov fully commits to this exploration of abstraction through his expressive\, carefully constructed paintings. Through a series of six panels\, Ivanov illustrates the visual diaries of three children\, aged nine\, twelve\, and sixteen\, that he met through his work as a child psychiatrist. Ivanov experiments with gestural brush strokes and varied color schemes to try and illustrate specific feelings and memories that provide insights into the lives of his patients. The resulting works are a mixture of figurative and abstract art that draws inspiration from the works of Joseph Stefanelli and Julian Schnabel. Across the series\, Ivanov employs a series of juxtapositions\, such as feelings of the movement against the static nature of the painted image\, gray backgrounds against swirls of saturated pigments\, and patches of paint scratched through to reveal the blank slate of unprimed canvas underneath. He contrasts bright\, overlapping streaks of blue\, green\, red\, and orange against patches of muted brown tones to capture both the intense turmoil and joy that takes place in the tumultuous lives of his patients. These paintings act as raw expressions of Ivanov’s patient’s emotions through the use of color\, movement\, and space. Ivanov has participated in a multitude of one-man shows and exhibitions\, including here at Alfa Art Gallery. DESCRIPTION:Virtual Award Ceremony: August 25th\, 2022 6:30-9 pm\nIn light of the pandemic\, Alfa Art Gallery has delayed to postpone the announcement of the winners of the 2020-2021 New Brunswick Art Salon (NBAS) and the Alfa and Women’s Caucus for Art New York Chapter collaborate exhibition. We are excited to announce that we are rearranging an online virtual award ceremony on August 25th\, 2022 to compensate our artists’ fascinating accomplishments and participation to our exhibitions. We are inviting every artists who have participated in the past during the period of our 2020-2021 exhibitions to join us and celebrate this ceremony. \nThis ceremony showcases works from artists who have won or been nominated for the NBAS Winning Awards\, which Alfa Art Gallery has been hosting for the past decade. The celebration of the New Brunswick Art Salon is a vital part for Alfa Art Gallery to express our respect towards the artists who have previously exhibited in the shows\, and to continuously reinforce our mission of delivering the importance of establishing the local art scene and culture. DESCRIPTION:Exhibition on Display: March 15th\, 2022 – April 23th\, 2022  \nVirtual Opening Reception: March 24th\, 2022  \nVIP –In-Person Reception: March 19th\, 2022  \nOn Tuesday\, March 15th\, the walls of Alfa Art gallery will be gracefully displaying Vesselin Kourtev’s solo exhibition “Phantasia: Expressions of Love.”  \nThe themes of fantasy and allure are staples in the artwork of Bulgarian-born artist Vesselin Kourtev.  In the selection of artworks on view in his upcoming solo exhibition\, Kourtev draws from both the realm of reality (from his own personal and emotional experiences) and the realm of fantasy. \nExperimenting with otherworldly colors\, abstract symbols\, and dream-like imagery\, Kourtev’s art allows viewers to enter into his imagination and to access realms of their own fantastical imaginings.  Throughout his artwork\, Kourtev utilizes a vibrant palette of pastel colors that work to transport viewers into technicolor worlds of their imagination. In each of his individual canvases\, Kourtev overlays meticulously-drawn abstract human figures over lighter pastels and darker colors. The hints of darker colors and shadows in his work recall the darker emotions of turmoil and sadness\, while the brilliant rainbow of pastels recall the joys and pleasures of human connection. \nIn these selected artworks\, Kourtev manipulates oil paint to make it look transparent and to develop his own one-of-a-kind style that is a blend of different painterly techniques. Unlike the usage of collage as seen in Kourtev’s previous exhibitions\, “Phantasia: Expressions of Love“ focuses on the artist’s mastery of the technique of embedding figures into color schemes formed by dark and pastel shades\, as well as focuses on showcasing his skill in rendering emotion through capturing human facial expressions that prompt us to guess at the unknown stories of the abstract characters illustrated. This exhibition also features a collection of Kourtev’s smaller brightly colored canvases entitled “Noise in the Ear”\, which are further explorations in abstraction and surrealist colorism. Kourtev’s artworks are intended to be open-ended\, and are subject to much interpretation: Ultimately\, Kourtev wants the viewer to determine their own interpretation of his art and take what meaning resonates with them. Kourtev has an immense amount of experience as a professional fine arts artist\, and has participated in countless one-man shows and exhibitions.  His travels throughout both America and Europe and his cross-cultural identity have influenced both the way he views the world as well as how he perceives his artistic practice. DESCRIPTION:Exhibition on Display: March 15th\, 2022 – April 23th\, 2022  \nVirtual Opening Reception: March 24th\, 2022  \nVIP –In-Person Reception: March 19th\, 2022  \nOn Tuesday\, March 15th\, the walls of Alfa Art gallery will be gracefully displaying Vesselin Kourtev’s solo exhibition “Phantasia: Expressions of Love.”  \nThe themes of fantasy and allure are staples in the artwork of Bulgarian-born artist Vesselin Kourtev.  In the selection of artworks on view in his upcoming solo exhibition\, Kourtev draws from both the realm of reality (from his own personal and emotional experiences) and the realm of fantasy.  \nExperimenting with otherworldly colors\, abstract symbols\, and dream-like imagery\, Kourtev’s art allows viewers to enter into his imagination and to access realms of their own fantastical imaginings.  Throughout his artwork\, Kourtev utilizes a vibrant palette of pastel colors that work to transport viewers into technicolor worlds of their imagination. In each of his individual canvases\, Kourtev overlays meticulously-drawn abstract human figures over lighter pastels and darker colors. The hints of darker colors and shadows in his work recall the darker emotions of turmoil and sadness\, while the brilliant rainbow of pastels recall the joys and pleasures of human connection.  \nIn these selected artworks\, Kourtev manipulates oil paint to make it look transparent and to develop his own one-of-a-kind style that is a blend of different painterly techniques. Unlike the usage of collage as seen in Kourtev’s previous exhibitions\, “Phantasia: Expressions of Love“ focuses on the artist’s mastery of the technique of embedding figures into color schemes formed by dark and pastel shades\, as well as focuses on showcasing his skill in rendering emotion through capturing human facial expressions that prompt us to guess at the unknown stories of the abstract characters illustrated. This exhibition also features a collection of Kourtev’s smaller brightly colored canvases entitled “Noise in the Ear”\, which are further explorations in abstraction and surrealist colorism. Kourtev’s artworks are intended to be open-ended\, and are subject to much interpretation: Ultimately\, Kourtev wants the viewer to determine their own interpretation of his art and take what meaning resonates with them. Kourtev has an immense amount of experience as a professional fine arts artist\, and has participated in countless one-man shows and exhibitions.  His travels throughout both America and Europe and his cross-cultural identity have influenced both the way he views the world as well as how he perceives his artistic practice. DESCRIPTION:Exhibition Duration: September 1\, 2020 – October 23\, 2020  \nOpening Reception: Thursday\, September 16 @ 4:00 pm \nOpening Reception: Saturday\, September 18 @ 4:00 pm \nAlfa Art Gallery invites you to “LATITUDES/LONGITUDES/MERIDIANS\,” a three-person show with Betty Jacobsen\, Yvonne Skaggs and Meredeth Turshen\, featuring representative works from their numerous explorations in oil\, watercolor\, drawing\, collage\, ceramics and mixed media. \nThe three artists have shown their work in a variety of exhibition venues around New York\, New Jersey\, and Pennsylvania since the 1980s. Through the years that Betty\, Yvonne and Meredeth have known\, worked and exhibited together\, they have influenced each other in many subtle ways\, especially with their commitment and dedication to express their feelings and visions artistically.  \n  \nBetty Jacobsen\, an artist and educator\, trained at Syracuse\, NYU and Montclair State University. She taught advanced art classes at Hunterdon Central Regional High School. Her passions are art and nature\, coupled with education. Nature serves as a personal metaphor for the cycles of life. Quietly intimate in size\, her work starts from observations of the outside world and flows from the unconscious. Her small works can stand individually yet create a larger visual statement when viewed together.    \nBetty manipulates clay slabs and assembles them into land/sea forms in this new series of artworks. In her hands\, bowls\, which are a traditional ceramic form\, become interior landscapes\, relating to a personal spiritual journey of the past few years. Linoleum relief blocks are carved\, pressed into clay\, cut out\, and added to the clay forms\, creating movement and rhythm. In ceramics\, the combination of earth and fire equals transformation.     \n  \nJ. Yvonne Skaggs\, an artist who exhibits two- and three-dimensional work in various venues in New York and New Jersey\, studied at the University of Iowa School of Art and Art History. Her varied career includes producing maps and technical drawings and designing and preparing exhibits for small history and art organizations. With traditional artifacts being destroyed around the world by man and nature\, she has been considering what we mean when we preserve objects\, paintings\, and artifacts of all kinds. With the abstracted landscape images shown here\, she thinks about the definition of style and culture and the objects we choose to save to record our time. She uses the technique of collage\, reassembling elements to sculpt\, build and construct images. The papers and fabrics come from many sources – magazines\, newspapers\, photographs and paper and fabric.  \nYvonne creates needlework images from plein-air drawings and paintings\, framing them in painted mats. The work incorporates painting drop cloths\, which provide energetic images of tempest and fury\, and contrast with the stitched serenity of a simple tree\, flower or path in the woods. Aware that the earth is being changed\, reshaped and destroyed\, Yvonne’s artwork illustrates the conflict between the stark beauty of this life and the death struggles of a planet fighting to survive.  \n  \nMeredeth Turshen is an artist\, teacher and writer who lives in Hoboken and taught at Rutgers University in New Brunswick\, NJ\, for more than 25 years. Her art studies began at age ten at the Art Students League in New York and continued\, after majoring in studio art at Oberlin College\, in workshops and residencies at Pratt\, the Printmaking Council of NJ\, the Rutgers Center for Innovative Printmaking\, Vermont Studio Center\, and Moulin à Nef (VCCA France). She exhibits regularly in the New York metropolitan region and with Viridian Gallery in Chelsea. For this exhibition\, she was inspired by the challenge of rendering remembered landscapes in oil and collage. The work is simultaneously representational and non-figurative.    \nMeredeth revisits storied landscapes viewed on her research trips through Africa\, Asia and Europe\, remembering and reimagining the environments that stamped her life. Working in oil paint and paper collage\, she searches for telling details that reveal place\, establish ambience\, and recall the experiences of being an amazed and observant visitor.

Afreen is experimenting with different techniques\, styles\, color patterns always striving to create something new and innovative. She is showing us visions of what she sees after she’s closing her eyes. Every of her paintings is a trace of memory of her emotions and experiences from her life. She is taking us to a journey to her inner world. Afreen works are rich in structures and gestures. They are dynamic and full of movement and this is what they require viewers to do\, to follow the directions created by the lines and brush traces\, colors and patterns. Our eyes are guided to move across the paintings rather than have just one quick look at them as a whole.  Afreen is sending us an invitation to interact with her art\, to take time and to enjoy her creations. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nAlex Bigatti holds a degree in Architecture from the School of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Buenos Aires in Argentina. She lived and worked as an architect in Southern California for several years before relocating to New Jersey. She creates in a variety of media: watercolors\, acrylics\, ink and oils\, as well as sculpting in clay and plasticine. Her intention is to capture the essence of a subject in a way that is constantly evolving and inviting the viewer to animate the painting by exploring it through a visual journey.  She is a member of the Center for Contemporary Art\, ARTsee (Annual Open Studio Tour) and Farmstead Arts. Her work has been in juried and non-juried shows and is in private collections in the USA and abroad. At the Alfa Art Gallery’s Exhibition she presents her series ‘’Flower of the Quarantine’\, which is a series of paintings of the flowers from her garden. \n  \n  \n  \nAndrea Epstein has been always driven to develop images focused more on the process itself and allowing images to emerge without a preconceived notion of the outcome. As she says herself she is seeking a journey into uncharted territory with her creations which results in rich textures and complex arrangement of shapes\, forms\, and colors. With her paintings\, collages and prints Andrea is trying to show what is hidden beneath the surface\, making the layers to overlap and expose the image. She is working in various techniques: oil based printing inks\, acrylics and mixed media on paper\, utilizing a variety of printmaking techniques\, both planographic and relief. She holds a B.F.A. from The Rhode Island School of Design and an M.F.A. from The Yale School of Art. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nAnn Vollum is a contemporary stitch artist based in New Jersey. Her unique techniques include natural hand dying\, appliqué\, acrylics\, Inktense pencils and lace boarders. She worked as a graphic designer in London and New York. Over years her artistic journey progressed through painting\, line drawing\, book making\, fantastical and detailed “paper cuts” to hand stitched textiles and sculptures. She is inviting the viewers into her unique world where everyone can have their own interpretation of what is seen. She leaves viewers the choice to decide what her art is. Ann developed her own visual language that is full of repetitive motifs and characters\, put together in her fantasy tableaux series. Now she is working on the two contrasting bodies of work\, a series portraits and sculptural pieces She has architectural and graphic orientation and reproduction educational background. She graduated from Newcastle University and London College of Prints. \n  \n  \nAprajita Lal floods her canvas with hues of joy\, serenity\, and solace as she depicts the beauty of nature. Her work is a doorway to a world that allows viewers to press pause on their busy lives\, take a moment\, and appreciate the stillness of the world. In moments of quiet\, viewers can listen to the voice of the rain\, the reveries of the ocean\, and the rustling of autumn leaves. She prides herself in masterfully harnessing the enigmatic forces of nature\, with its infinite existential possibilities\, and transcribing them beautifully on the canvas for all to enjoy. The transparency and spontaneity of watercolors are particularly appealing to her\, but she is also accomplished using acrylics and oils. In her opinion\, an artist’s true responsibility is to share the gift of knowledge with others\, which inspired her to teach art as well as create it. Her work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions and featured in the Summer 2020 issue of Creative Artist Magazine. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nBeatrice Stenta is creating her unique stories with each of her works\, by the careful manipulation of the materials by the use of colors\, movement and textures. Her technique is collage and mix media\, she often uses citrus solvent soaked National Geographic pages as the base of her works. It is a process of dissolving the image\, to the point when we can see the blurred picture. It creates the atmosphere of a mystery and other\, undefined world. Beatrice’s inspiration comes from her home’s ocean view as well as from her past memories and present events. She is sharing with us her very own\, unique stories depicted in her images. Beatrice graduated with BA at Youngstown State University. \n  \n  \n  \n  \nCecilia Martinez is an established and published writer and poet\, with her work being recognized all over the world\, from New York to the Philippines. Art was her way of coping with the loss of her father\, it was a form of therapy. Her work has been exhibited in more than 30 venues since she began showcasing her art in October 2016. She graduated college with a Bachelor of Arts in English/Journalism\, and soon after became a reporter/editor for a local newspaper. Then hit with the tragedy in her personal life she turned to visual arts. Then hit with the tragedy in her personal life she turned to visual arts. She is a self-taught artist\, she is constantly developing her visual language. Her biggest inspiration is her father\, this is her way to keep memories of him. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nChristina Sorace MacKinnon probes the dynamics of line\, color\, mark-making\, and fluctuation through her abstract works. The process is a derivative of how she navigates as a woman and mother in an ever-changing social landscape. She surrenders to the dialogue of process when she develops surface\, then moves to create fields of heavily saturated and multi-layered congestion. As she paints\, she connects discord with harmony\, formulating an interplay of acrylic\, spray paint\, paint pens\, and other mediums as a metaphor for the paradoxical ways life unfolds. By informing the work with frayed notions and complexities of anxiety\, misconceptions\, stigmas\, and patriarchal narratives\, she steers through the messiness and struggle until she finds peace and resolve\, both within herself and her work. She has been featured in group and solo exhibitions throughout the tri-state area\, been published in numerous publications\, and has works in private collections in the United States\, Canada\, and Greece. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nDonna Rega transmits her emotional spirit into an observable manifestation\, her paintings a crystallization of feeling that transcends spoken language and can only be achieved through visualization. Abstraction is a personal journey of perseverance. Color\, texture\, line\, movement\, and artfulness are the elements found in every work\, all put together like a puzzle solved before the viewer’s eye. Much of her process involves flurries of willful strokes\, splashes\, and drips\, followed by a gradual synchronization of her emotional presence and what is revealed upon the canvas. In the end\, the canvas itself was a menor\, aiding in her self-reflection. She hopes that the paintings she creates are inspirational\, with their emotional touch recognized by the viewer who\, too\, is touched by the melody of feeling captured in the work. Donna received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from New Jersey City University and is currently working on her Master of Fine Arts from William Paterson University.  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nDrew Griffiths’s works are literally set on fire\, this is how artist create his magnificent art pieces using many layers of wax and colors which are later burnt with fire\, creating texture and depth and provoking the viewer to look more closely and to see all of the processes and results. Drew is a visual artist and a writer. His early inspiration came from comics and books\, especially from the emotional capacity of bold colors used in comics to express emotions therefore the transition from writing to visual arts in his case was inevitable.  Artist is building a contemplative experience for a viewer where we can reflect on the current state of our society\, economy\, environment\, relationship with technology and our desire for beauty based on materialism. \n  \n  \n  \n  \nEmily Arenberg is a Brooklyn based artist who works primarily in oils and watercolors. She draws her inspiration from nature\, the ocean and the mountains. With her works she tries to grab the masterpiece of the universe itself. She is creating oil and acrylic paintings as well as raisin paintings. She graduated from Marymount Manhattan College in New York with a Bachelor of Fine Arts concentration in painting\, and a minor in Art History. Her influences are: Jenny Saville\, Lisa Yuskavage and Jenn Mann. \n  \n  \n  \nEric Reid redefines the connections between mediums\, employing unorthodox materials to create masterful works. His series “Textured” prioritizes form over color\, playing with the boundaries between what constitutes ‘painting’ and what compromises ‘sculpture’. Crackle paste\, vinyl spackling\, and joint tape are used alongside more traditional acrylics and charcoal. The grayscale palette keeps viewers focused on the patterns; every work is centered on its study of material complexity. The series itself is a line of questioning\, asking the viewer how they see the work\, what they consider it\, and what each texture inspires in as they gaze upon it. The precise focus of the series gives viewers a chance to fully contemplate what is in front of them without distractions. A Deputy Attorney General in Trenton\, he has experimented with art since his law school days\, proving himself accomplished both in the legal field and the artistic domain. \n  \n  \n  \nGrace Modla chooses hope and resilience rather than cynicism and surrender when viewing the challenges haunting our world. To her\, creating works saturated with rich color and populated with uplifting subjects is an ultimate act of hope. Her works are meant to counter balance against the hardships and ugly realities that occur within the viewer’s life\, giving them a gentle reprieve and touch of vibrance. In her studio\, nothing is tossed or lost; everything ends up being reused and repurposed. In her series “Wild Garden\,” she dips sticks from her garden in ink and then uses them as stamps\, then uses her father’s masonry trowels to apply paint\, paying homage to the sprawling beauty of nature. Born in Northern Italy\, her experiences as a young immigrant taught her how art bridges all language barriers. \n  \nIsabell Villacis consistently illustrates compassion and love for all people in her paintings\, her writing\, and her choreography. Her abstract works are populated with meticulously placed elements\, each conveying a message in their own right as they work together to make a statement overall. She has tried almost every tool and material available to her\, never turning down a chance to integrate something new into her pieces if they help her meaning. Even at a quick glance\, the viewer can see the level of consideration put into each piece\, which is animated with vivid colors and intriguing shapes. They pop and seize the viewer’s attention\, longer looks encouraging deeper contemplation. In addition to being an accomplished multi-faceted artist\, she is an advocate for greater inclusion of people with disabilities in the art world. She has been a member of Art Access since 2011 and has worked extensively on altering mainstream social and cultural perceptions of peoples with different levels of ability.  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nJamison Eckert’s process is more akin to controlling chaos\, nothing ever planned out in full. When he found art school unrewarding\, he pursued tattooing\, which in turn affected his painting. While the tattoo craft demands perfection\, no margin for error with something permanently etched on another’s skin\, painting was a way to relieve his exhaustion and abstractly express himself with not pressures or constraints. He has since stepped away from tattooing to pour all his focus into exploring his personal artistic journey\, creating freely and without hesitation. His literal and representational pieces focus on form and light\, challenging himself to be accurate in his depictions without losing his own voice. His abstract works\, meanwhile\, are imbued with personal meaning and intent that viewers can parse out themselves. He is highly interested in the viewer\, feeling their reactions\, thoughts\, and feelings cannot be understated in the relationship between artist and spectator. \n  \n  \nJan Kathleen Reyes embraces fully the freedom to create art purely for self-expression. This collection is a reflection of her growth from self-acceptance to self-love\, emulating the flourishing beauty and perpetual goodness within herself and her surroundings. Painting is a natural\, intuitive\, and spiritual process for her. By employing a range of other materials—fabric\, wallpaper\, decorative stationary\, and dried flowers—she sought to delve into the relationship between the paint and the mixed media\, its harmony and its tension. Emotion guides her process\, with warm and vibrant colors embodying the emotions she feels. Her childhood spent in the sunny Philippines and move to the US during her early teen years encouraged her to explore themes of belonging and memory. She is a student at Rutgers University-Newark\, double majoring in Graphic Design and Fine Arts in Painting with a minor in Art History\, and is slated to graduate in May of 2021. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nJane Dell is a painter and mixed media artist. Her inspirations are environmental challenges\, plants and animal fantasies\, hybrids and the effects of lunar phases on the earth. Her works are metaphors of the world often referring to the world of nature and surrealistic visions. Jane creates tension by juxtaposing elements of the recognizable imagery with invented abstract forms. Jane employs a wide range of materials that includes acrylic and acrylic mediums\, cold wax\, watercolor inks\, photo collage\, glitter\, fiber\, paper\, and the occasional found object on canvas\, wood boards and archival paper. She graduated with BFA from Pratt Institute and complemented her studies at Parsons School of Design and The School of Visual Arts in New York. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nJennifer Malone contemplates empathy in each of her works\, always seeking a connection with her subjects. She presents structures\, figures\, and objects to express their significance in the context of the moment. Her current focus is inanimate objects\, her vibrant still life pieces paying careful mind to light and shadow. She preserves moments worth commemorating\, considering\, and lamenting over. Some works share the horror\, fear\, sadness\, and embarrassment encapsulated in her view of the United States’ present state of affairs. Form\, lines\, and color emote on her behalf\, resulting in a carefully planned composition where every single detail matters immeasurably. Much of her art is influenced by where she has lived\, from her upbringing in New York City to her time in Philadelphia\, London\, Hoboken\, Jersey City\, and a lifetime of summers on the Shore.\n \n  \nJesús Núñez demonstrates how everything coexists in a delicate balance. A careful use of color unifies the contrasts of different contours and shapes. He uses a unique acrylic brushstroke technique to maintain fluid curves attained through a single continuous motion. Every color is carefully selected for the specific piece\, ensuring that they are elevated to their full potential. He began as a street artist in his native Madrid\, then moved to the culinary arts. He relocated to New York\, gaining more renown through restaurants\, creating edible art comparable to surrealist Salvador Dali. His art is not only a reflection of his time as chef\, but also an expression of his daily inspirations\, all while keeping his work genuine both to his life and his process. \n  \nJodi Oster believes art should make people feel good. She creates art to make people happy\, as laughter is the best medicine. Humor is at the heart of her works\, motivated to create art that makes people smile or giggle\, the viewer’s joy her measure of success. Her works playfully incorporate a plethora of materials\, ranging from acrylic\, air dry clay\, dish glass\, beads\, and other found objects. Her use of light and bright colors keeps her pieces light-hearted\, with many of their compositions channeling a sense of happiness. The handmade quality is put to the forefront\, the folksy feel indicative of something made with Tender Loving Care. As a stay-at-home mother\, she taps in well with the aura of homeliness while equally capturing a sort of childlike delight in her works\, whether two- or three-dimensional. Everything is stylized to the point that a viewer needs only a brief glance before going “Yup\, that’s Jodi Oster.” Her work has been featured in craft shows in the tristate area.  \n  \n  \n  \nJune He’s works are a tribute to the covid 19 pandemic victims\, her paintings and collages are her way to cope with the harsh reality of 2020 and with not having the possibility to go back home anymore\, which in her case is China. Artist’s perception of the world has changed and we can observe it in her art pieces which are very accurate observations of the reality we live in and have to cope with now. June’s works can bring a ray of light and some relief in these difficult times. She is letting us know that we are not alone\, we go through this together and we will get out of this mess stronger as humanity. As the artist is saying herself she is recording history\, exploring emotions and seeking the truth. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nK Brown‘s story mirrors that of the Little Mermaid\, entering the fairy tale world of fashion at the cost of her voice. What broke her spell\, though\, was not the kiss of a handsome prince\, but the freedom of expression found in making art. Her old self was constricted by the expectations and judgement of ‘the industry’\, but now she has torn those pieces to shreds and used those shards to compose incredible collages that embody her new life\, her true life. Her works embody their own magic\, with patterns and textures overlaying one another to form worlds that draw viewers in further and further\, like their own enclosed tale. Above all else\, she hopes that in showcasing her own creations she can also elevate the works of other women and femmes who are transcending beyond ideals and presumptions others frame them in. Her art is more than a reckoning; it is a liberation from an archaic world that exists in what is now fiction. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nKimberlyn Falk takes a fluid approach both to life and to her art. The unpredictable nature of her alcohol ink works represents the uncertainty and flow of life itself. Journeys never go exactly as planned\, but each and every outcome is unique and beautiful. She often gravitates towards a bright color palette\, which compliments the nuances created through her effective use of tints and shades. Her flair for shimmering metallics gives her works an especially effervescent quality\, as the shines change throughout the date with the natural course of daylight and moonlight\, creating different effects depending on when one happens to view it. She earned her Bachelor’s from Franklin University Switzerland in Lugano in 2017. An emerging artist\, she began pursuing art full time in 2020 and has since been a featured artist at GRND Coffee Shop in Chicago since January 2021 and was a featured artist at Queen City Coffee Roasters in March & April 2021. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nLauren Curtis’s works speak to her true loves\, nature\, femininity and spirituality. Her use of symbolism within her pieces blend ideas old and new\, formulating odes to her favorite things within her mixed media works. Lauren creates her artistic masterpieces using a blend of photography and other mediums such as oil\, ink\, charcoal and pencil to depict her deeply inspired collages about stories interwoven into her life’s journey\, whether those be experienced or observed. The human experience remains tied to nature’s spirituality providing consistent ideas and inspirations for Lauren Curtis’ works\, the symbols within her works making her source of inspiration obvious. Lauren’s visual journey is all about depicting femininity in the frame of natural spirituality that’s found all around us. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nLaurie Harden endeavors to capture people and places in the moment. At the core of her works are the emotions and concerns found in every culture and society\, showcasing similarity alongside difference. Her portraits do not simply depict facial features in high fidelity\, but mindfully include the moods passing through expressions\, the atmosphere surrounding her subject\, and the aura they radiate. The person’s essence is not their appearance but what they exude\, as one’s presence is the totality of their persona\, which she tries to faithfully preserve as she puts her brush to her canvas. She studied at the Kansas City Art Institute and earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Illustration from Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). She has been exhibited in group and solo exhibitions throughout the tri-state area and has received numerous awards for her artwork. Along with being an illustrator and painter\, she teachers art classes to those of all ages. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \nMartin Dull uses abstraction to communicate the contemporary zeitgeist. By conflating personal narrative\, poetry\, mythology\, and iconography in curated environments\, he seeks to rattle viewers’ preconceptions\, opening them to broader questions of humanity\, spirituality\, and the role of art in fostering meaningful dialogue. He raises questions about the efficacy of appropriation within art\, religion\, and politics\, without taking a particular standpoint ethically or rhetorically. His deliberate distance enables viewers to develop and interpret the content on their own terms\, offering a forum for democratic discussion. He studied at the Pratt Institute\, Marywood University\, and the New York Studio School of Drawing\, Painting\, and Sculpture where\, in 2015\, he received his MFA. He worked as a guest speaker at numerous New York universities\, co-curated exhibitions in the New York Metropolitan Area\, and co-founded the curatorial collaborative JMN Artists. His work has been in group and solo exhibitions throughout the United States. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nMitchell Rosenzweig’s works speak to the true chaos of life\, being beautifully captured and illuminated in a permanent visual depiction. His works are mixed media\, using a multitude of different tools in order to create this sense of chaos within all of his works\, employing oil\, acrylic\, enamel\, and spray paint on repurposed billboard pieces\, often already filled with visuals and text. The purpose of Mitchell’s works is to create depth via his impactful color relationships. His process being defined by his removal and addition of color as he moves along in each piece. Mitchell Rosenzweig’s works have been consistently and heavily exhibited across the northeastern United States\, standing as a true testament to the beauty he creates through his art. \n  \n  \n  \nSarasvathy TK’s works take heavy inspiration from still life paintings completed by Dutch artists in the Baroque period who ascribed to this style. However\, their artistic passion did not begin immediately for Sarasvathy\, focusing on engineering and computer science before 2008\, after this point she threw herself into the artistic world. Following this transition Sarasvathy gravitated towards larger-than-life depictions of still objects as well as landscape scenes. She uses her detail oriented and focused nature to create crisp\, vivid realistic portrayals of what she observes around her. Sarasvathy’s works hold an international presence that speaks to the true impact of her works. \n  \n  \nSteve Patton always comes back to portraiture. While he has dabbled in other areas\, like landscape and abstract\, the face and its range of emotion always beckons him back\, demanding he study further complexity and mystery. He sees the world in sets of three\, and thus extends this perspective to his examination of faces as well. First\, is the physical structure maintained from the skull. Then\, there is the mask\, or the projected façade that a person puts on. The final layer is more nebulous\, a hidden spiritual dimension. His goal as an artist is to unite the two visible parts as well as the more subtle inner one into a singular manifestation the viewer can appreciate. To achieve this goal\, he employs deft use of color\, line\, and nuanced spaces. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a Minor in Media from the College of New Jersey. He has participated in several exhibitions in the New Jersey area and is featured in private collections in New Jersey and Maryland. \n  \n  \nWendy Born views art as a metaphor for living. She invites viewers to linger over rich\, saturated colors and detailed\, patterned surfaces\, noting all the people and animals inhabiting her inspired worlds. While her favored themes are the passage of time and evolution of seasons\, she has recently focused on recording how the pandemic has changed everyday life. In covering a more somber subject\, her palette has darkened\, but still retains a sense of vibrance\, which only highlights the urgency in some of her weightier pieces. She mixes her own paints\, allowing her to explore dense applications and textural surfaces. She received a Bachelor of Arts in Teaching and Fine Arts Education from Montclair State University\, and earned a Master of Elementary Education with Waldorf Teacher Certification from Antioch University New England. Along with being a fine artist\, Born is also a teacher and illustrator for children’s books and the apparel industry.  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nAlfa Art Gallery is a non-profit organization devoted to the discovery\, growth\, and support of emerging and established artists within the art community. Since establishment\, Alfa Art has conducted multiple shows featuring local\, national\, and international artists and various materials including oil color\, water color\, mixed media\, sculptures\, photography\, crafts and glass works. As an open art studio – gallery\, Alfa’s exhibiting artists are welcomed to demonstrate their creative process in the space provided\, while collectors and visitors are capable to learn and follow the artists’ technique\, style and motivations. DESCRIPTION:This Spring\, Alfa Art Gallery is proud to host the New Brunswick Art Salon’s “Resonant Becoming” Exhibition. This exhibition showcases works from artists who have won or been nominated for the NBAS\, which the Alfa Art Gallery has hosted for a decade. The NBAS and the artists displayed are a vital part of the local art scene and culture. Past artists will have the opportunity to showcase their latest works\, their creative evolution\, and their overall growth as artists since their past NBAS nomination. This season’s exhibition includes several renowned artists including Charity Henderson\, Michael Price\, Sajal Sarkar\, Wes Sherman\, and many more!   \n   \nAs per our nation’s new normal\, the Alfa Art Gallery is equally excited to include a virtual version of our exhibition. Visitors will be able to view and interact with works through a fully interactive online experience\, allowing all to enjoy the gallery as if in person from the comfort and safety of their homes. International artists will be displayed exclusively in the digital version of the exhibition\, so be sure not to miss it! Hosted by artsteps.com\, the NBAS “Resonant Becoming” Exhibit will be available virtually and physically from March 30th through May 8th.  \n  \nExhibition duration: March 30th through May 8th\, 2021  \nVirtual Reception: Friday\, April 2nd\, 2021 at 6:30pm  \nDrop-off Dates: March 23rd through March 28th\, 2021  \n  \nFeatured Artists: \nCharity Henderson explores psychological states emoting on the human face through blurred edges and textured strokes. Her portraiture series presented here uses oils and graphite on Dura-Lar\, depicting precise details that become fragmented as the view expands beyond the face. Her use of a translucent medium for a background evokes obscured sensibility\, one of Henderson’s signature techniques\, as the sharpness of the subjects’ features demand notice. The eyes lock with the viewers’\, establishing a deep sense of intimacy as spectator and spectacle share an unspoken story\, lacking full explanation yet consuming full attention. Henderson received her BFA in Painting from SUNY Brockport and her MFA from University of Massachusetts Dartmouth on a Distinguished Artist Fellowship. \n  \n  \n  \nEthan Patrick Sherman is questioning the significance of authenticity and identity in his works. He was born in Philadelphia\, and currently resides and works in New Brunswick\, New Jersey. His paintings are connected to the places where they come from. He uses bold colors\, different materials\, textures\, elements of architecture to tell the story of each unique object.   \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nJim McKeon is constantly inspired by those he comes across as he journeys through life. His passion for the performing arts and involvement with theatrical set design plays into how he paints backgrounds of his scenes. The simple\, geometric forms are hint and movement\, anticipating players on the stage of his works. The concept of the individual is at the forefront of his work\, celebrating what it means to be human in each and every one of his pieces.   \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nKaren Terry is a painter inspired by her love of nature. Her greatest inspiration comes from the change of seasons\, and her daily interactions with nature. She paints what she takes in of the natural world\, using a painting technique that emulates visual and sensory memory. The result is low light images without hard lines. They are an exploration of space and form\, ambience and energy\, using the traditional east Asian medium of Sumi ink and acrylic painting.  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nKarissa Gannon hopes her works create a pause that signals everyone to collectively stop and take a breath. Her series employs alcohol ink to create compelling petri dishes as paintings. Her work is reflective of this past year—2020—which Gannon characterized as overstimulating in many facets. She has used her work as a way to soothe herself\, and by extension provide a sense of relief to her viewers\, whom she hopes can walk away with that feeling fully absorbed. Gannon received her BFA from Mason Gross School of Arts at Rutgers University. She displayed in several solo and group exhibitions\, primarily in the New Jersey area. Along with creating art\, she has a taught cartooning\, drawing\, other art\, and English.\n \n  \n  \n  \nLibby Ramage is transforming the scraps of life into poems of wide range of visual emotions by using abandoned children’s drawings. Her technique is to use charcoal\, watercolors and acrylics on her collages and handmade papers. She has been teaching art for over 20 years therefore her inspirations come from her students – children\, their excitement and boldness in creating.  Ramage biggest guides as she calls them herself form the art world are Paul Klee and Robert Rauschenburg.   \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nMichael Price questions the psychological relationship between imagination and reality\, fixating on the archetypes of myths and religions. He seizes on the quintessential imagery that transcends cultural barriers\, seeing these trends as the spark of inspiration. His pieces use natural pigments hand-ground from rocks and crystals\, his palette reminiscent of the Renaissance painters. In his reliefs\, figures burst from the picture’s plane to highlight the tension between illusion and materiality\, while triptychs and paneled works investigate the functionality and limitations of the poetic narrative. He graduated from Stoke-on-Trent College of Art with a pre-degree Foundation Course and earned a BA with honors from London Central School of Art and Design (now Central St. Martins). Along with exhibiting his works in the US and Europe\, Price contributed to and published research on mineral pigment production.  \n  \n  \n  \nMiriam Stern is a painter\, printmaker and installation artist. She works with the series of photographs and collages constructing layers of abstraction with elements of reality which then she uses in her paintings. With each piece produced the original elements from her prints become more and more abstract. The themes of her works are often connected to values and ideas prominent in Jewish philosophy.  In 2016 a monograph of her art was published titled Miriam Stern.  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nSajal Sarkar uses his art to change the world\, orienting trajectory away from needless violence and instead towards peace and stability. Deeply impacted by the story of his family\, who fled from ethnic riots to India from East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) in 1947\, Sarkar themes his works around socio-political issues that persistently foment conflict in all corners of the world. His recent works toy with the notion of the multiverse\, a belief that our universe exists amongst a myriad of parallel ones. These works express sadness and loss\, conveying the nuances of risk and uncertainty plaguing people’s lives. Sarkar received his post graduate diploma in Graphics from Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda and Graduated from the Government College of Art and Craft in Kolkata.  \n  \n  \nSteve Cavallo examines the human figure in his works\, drawing viewers to both find beauty in fellow beings and ponder weighty subjects within human rights. A graduate of the School of Visual Arts\, Cavallo uses watercolor to paint victims of human trafficking—a majority of them women—with great respect and overwhelming empathy. As colors emphasize the difficult reality of those impacted by cruel and brutal practices\, while the forms manifest memories and dreams of what and who they wanted to be before inhumanity twisted them. In 2010\, Cavallo designed the United States’ first memorial to Comfort Women\, sexual slaves of Imperial Japanese soldiers in World War II\, in Palisades Park\, New Jersey. His striking works compel viewers to connect with victims of intense trauma and ponder what it means to be human. \n  \n  \n  \n  \nSusan Ward is not only an artist but also a mother\, wife\, sociologist\, and insurance broker. Her inspiration comes from nature’s awesome patterns and mysterious rhythms. Her detailed graphite drawings and vibrant acrylic paintings convey the relaxing\, stress-free atmosphere offered by the forests she hikes through. Her series “Ice Forest” is based on minute ice formations that covered a small wooden bridge she and her dog passed over daily during the pandemic. Her bold colors and abstract shapes act as escapism\, yet a careful viewer can discern their real-life sources. Equally\, as the viewer gazes upon the products of many months’ laborious effort\, one can think of how nature creates these forms effortlessly every day.   \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nWes Sherman seeks to understand humans’ conflicting relationship with nature\, as people desire control over the unconquered yet crave a retreat into its tranquility. He believes painting is one of the earliest acts of human beings\, deepening his interest in history and illustrating his view on art’s impression on humanity. His love for abstraction and landscape is evident in his works\, as painting defines life and contextualizes people as a part of nature. He begins his work by drawing to refine and capture the composition\, then painting to broaden the narrative and tell a story. Sherman received an MFA from Mason Gross School of Arts at Rutgers University and currently serves as Chair of Exhibitions at the Center for Contemporary Art in Bedminster\, New Jersey.   \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n Alfa Art Gallery is a non-profit organization devoted to the discovery\, growth\, and support of emerging and established artists within the art community. Since establishment\, Alfa Art has conducted multiple shows featuring local\, national\, and international artists and various materials including oil color\, water color\, mixed media\, sculptures\, photography\, crafts and glass works. Living and working abroad gave her the opportunity to snap photos of ordinary people wherever she went\, accumulating two decades worth of stunning material. Inspired by Henri Carter Bresson and her photography mentor\, Leandre Jackson\, Rahim views photography as fine art\, which she combines with her creative writing. She has a BA from University of Chicago\, JD from Temple Beasley School of Law\, and MFA from Rutgers-Newark University. Along with being a Voices of Our Nation alumni\, Rahim was a PANK Book Contest Finalist for her hybrid memoir and has exhibited her photography throughout the tri-state area. She is a 2020 Artist in Residence at SMUSH Gallery.   \n  \n  \nArik Gorban was eleven years old when he first started processing black-and-white film. Since then\, his abilities have only been honed by his 40+ year career as a fine art photographer\, both in his refined technical skills and through the development of his creative process. He has spent decades experimenting and closing the gap between what is possible with a camera and digital editing\, and what he envisions in his mind’s eye. He puts special focus on the creative\, but does so without neglecting the technical aspects of the photography discipline. The same care goes into his editing process\, which he utilizes to finalize his vision and provide a completed piece.  \n  \n  \n  \nBrad Terhune crafts weird worlds through his collages\, something he has done since childhood. A northern New Jersey-based artist\, he embraces the influences of 20th century Surrealist influence in creating portals into his strange realms\, often imbued with the powerful subjects of politics and social justices. His collages incorporate a plethora of materials\, like historic photographs\, and other disciplines\, like printmaking. His paintings\, meanwhile\, represent a dialogue between creator and canvas\, with Terhune asking himself how and why the image develops as it does; this is the soul of these pieces\, which are ‘about’ exactly what the viewer sees. He majored in Illustration at the School of Visual Arts in the 80’s and obtained a BA in Art Education from Montclair State University. Along with creating new works\, he serves as an art educator for Clark Public Schools and an Instructor at Zimmerli Art Museum’s Summery Art Camp. He frequently exhibits in the New York-New Jersey area and is featured in collections in Japan\, England\, France and elsewhere in the United States.  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nChee Bravo reflects rich and diverse environments inhabited by vibrant and soulful individuals through her portraits. Her background as a printmaker and career as graphic designer informs her creative process\, first putting together digital collages with photography and computer manipulation\, and then transferring the piece onto canvas with acrylics and silk-screening. While her life began in Trinidad and Tobago in the West Indies\, her journey began in the New York subways\, capturing performers in their element. Her interests have only grown\, with a trip to Havana\, Cuba inspiring a series on reflecting people’s cultural\, religious\, and political beliefs. Her current focus lies with the local performers of her hometown\, Trenton\, New Jersey. She holds a BFA in printmaking from Florida International University and numerous awards\, including the Betty Laird Award and Addy Award. Her works can be found publicly in the permanent collections of Trenton City Museum\, Florida International University\, the Brooklyn Art Library\, the Printmaking Center of New Jersey\, as well as featured in exhibitions throughout the tri-state area and abroad.   \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nDanielle Austen is a photographer and an environmentalist trained in the fine arts\, having received her BFA from Cornell University. Additionally\, she attended the master’s program at the Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications with an emphasis in studying photojournalism\, but not before spending 7 years as a graphic designer among a number of other artistic endeavors. Today\, she presents her collection of photographs featuring warm organic imagery that could only be designed by the majesty of the natural world and captured by the steady hand of a seasoned photographer. Devoted to the land and her craft\, Austen focuses on bodies of water. Easily overlooked brooks and streams are transformed into spiritual waterfronts while intertwining their fluidity and ever-fluctuating form to match the possibility of viewer interpretation. Her work is overflowing with reflective and meditative potential.   \n  \n  \nFrederick Ballet has always been enamored with the natural world\, a source of existential fascination and peaceful solitude. While the Brooklyn native initially pursued a medical career as a hand surgeon\, retirement allowed him to renew his passion in photography. In 2018\, he became the first student to earn the Contemporary Practices Photography Certificate from Philadelphia Photo Arts Center and has since had his work displayed at shows\, galleries and businesses\, a long way from snapping pictures of zoo animals with an Olympus camera. Ballet captures images of the beach at various times in the day and year\, balancing realism and abstraction by anchoring viewers to the shore and then inviting them to contemplate the colors and calmness of the ocean. He hopes viewers walk away with the same sentiments that resound in him after gazing upon the natural majesty\, “a meditative sense of beauty\, peace\, and timelessness.”  \n  \n  \nGeorge Mattei captures the beauty of the Jersey Shore through the High Dynamic Range technique\, a process that imitates how the human eye gazes upon a scene. Rather than taking a single exposure\, Mattei sets up a tripod and obtains three to nine exposures at varying light levels and tones\, then combines them into one image. In preserving details that would have otherwise been overlooked\, Mattei elevates everything beautiful about the landscapes and seascapes he photographs\, resulting in an immersive viewing experience. A graduate of the School of Visual Arts\, Mattei creates photography for art and commercial purposes and is currently working at Helen Hayes Rehabilitation Hospital\, using his photography as a mode for wellness and inspiration. His photos are featured for businesses’ promotional materials and at galleries and exhibitions throughout New Jersey.   \n  \n  \nGwyneth Green is an artist who uses the camera and the written word. A published poet with a BA in Fairleigh Dickenson University\, Green participated in ekphrastic collaborations with visual artists. Approaching the synergic nature of the word and the image fascinated her\, her piqued interest encouraging her to wed her poems with her photographs. Her careful use of color and focus mimics imaginative prose as it guides viewers through the scene. She has fifteen poetic publications and has been featured in exhibitions in the mid-Atlantic region as well as virtual ones.  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nHarold Olejarz invites viewers to peer through a kaleidoscope in his circular-constructed pieces. His career began in 3D as a sculptor\, earning a BA from Brooklyn College and MFA from Pratt Institute and participating actively in the Soho cooperative gallery movement. By the 80’s\, he’d adapted his sculptures to be wearable and incorporate performance into his art\, and in the 90’s explored digital imaging to capture the ‘performances’ of objects on a digital scanner. His present work looks beyond the typical rectangular confines of the frame and instead creates circular\, collaged images consisting of repeating\, rotating slices reminiscent of a pinwheel or mandala. This invites viewers to focus on relationships of the images and reveal intricate and delightful patterns. He has participated in solo and group exhibitions and performances throughout the United States\, as well as participated in reviews nationally and internationally.  \n  \n  \n  \nKay Kenny shows silent statues witness societal descent and environmental vulnerability. Currently a photography teacher at New York University and the International Center of Photography in New York City\, Kenny is deeply rooted in the fine art world. Her education includes a BFA from Syracuse University\, MA from Rutgers University\, and MFA from Syracuse University\, while her resume includes work in photography\, painting\, and published critique. Her Stone Goddess series takes Greek and Roman sculptures from the Metropolitan Museum and places them elsewhere in the United States\, acting as avatars of the past watching what humanity’s whims have wrought. Her work has been exhibited in in the Eastern United States and Taiwan\, and\, in 2004\, she co-curated the exhibit “Manifestations: Photographs of Men” at the Southeast Museum of Photography in 2004.   \n  \n  \nLinda Troeller is a renowned and award-winning photographer who has dedicated the majority of her artistic career to personal\, women’s and social issues. Her latest work\, “Personal Opera\,” tackles subjects she has been exploring for most of her career\, such as gender\, humanity\, emotion and aura. She has refined her ability to capture the human body\, arranging the human body to best promote these questions of truth and self. Her portraits dare to delve beneath the surface and face the questions of personhood. There is no subject she will shy away from\, and the confidence is palpable. She is the star of her “Personal Opera.”  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nLothar Troeller’s “Children of the fire” is a series reflecting Troeller’s personal journey through crisis and destiny that is physically formed by not only the elements of the earth but by the conscious mind that guides them. The German American artist and photographer whose exhibition work spans over multiple decades and continents\, now invites us to observe his Children of the Fire with introspective intent. His visually diverse yet equally striking works are simultaneously vibrant and painful. The raw and heartbreaking series is charged with a sense of perseverance in the face of adversity. The scorched surface gives way to new beginnings\, as hardships often do.    \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nMark Chernin uses his photography to evoke an emotional response in his viewers. His love of photography began while he was in college in the 1960’s\, a period of social upheaval in the United States that used photography to demonstrate the political activism and national debate the country was experiencing. As he continued to study art\, he discovered the paintings of the Hudson River School and was moved by the artists abilities to capture the luminous qualities of light\, tonality and saturation. Over the last six decades\, Chernin has been able to study with prominent photographers\, and display his work in national juried fine art photography exhibitions along with several of his own solo exhibitions. Most recently\, Mark won a First Place in his category at the First Annual National Arts Competition at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (2011).  \n  \n  \n  \nMelchi Dompreh’s photographs\, like his poetry\, hope to express his heart’s sentiments and stir up emotions and feelings viewers can empathize with. Dompreh is native to Flushing\, Queens\, New York\, but moved to Edison\, New Jersey in 2004. He graduated from Middlesex Country Vocational and Technical Schools with a focus on Architecture Technology in 2013. He began to take photography seriously in March of 2016\, as a way to visually express what he had written in his poems. By the end of Summer 2017\, Dompreh started to work with film\, and in 2019 his work began to be shared on Instagram. Dompreh is currently working on a transforming his poetic journal\, ’Loud Whispers ‘to film. This work will explore the turbulent years that marked his teenage years and early adulthood\, that many face. He recently was one of five artists awarded the Moment x Willem Verbeeck Grant\, and is developing his own website.  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nMichael Yacovino passed away nearly two decades ago\, but his work is still as powerful as ever. It is able to embody the capabilities of art\, in whichever medium it may present itself\, to evolve and metamorphose in perpetuity. Yavocino received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Mason Gross School of Art in 1986\, and had several dalliances with fashion design.  Yacovino’s work juxtaposes the familiar with the ambiguous\, and presents a commentary on objectification.   \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nTricia Miho is an Argentinian\, self-taught artist who was destined to be an artist from birth. Her family is filled with talented artist and craftsman\, and her grandfather was even an esteemed Italian jewelry designer. She received a formal education in music with a Baccalaureate degree along with a Masters in Law and Social Sciences\, along with received British Royal Academies awards in painting\, watercolor and drawing. Her work was characterized by an inimitable artistic style influenced by the surrealist visions of Giorgio De Chirico\, and the detail-rich cityscapes depicted by Pieter Bruegel. Miho currently resides in the United States\, is regularly featured in exhibitions\, and has been experimenting with photography as a means of manipulating and creating new ideas.  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nAlfa Art Gallery is a non-profit organization devoted to the discovery\, growth\, and support of emerging and established artists within the art community. This seasons exhibition includes several locally renowned artists including Carol Radsprecher and Allison Lewis\, along with international artists Jung Gun Park and Ogunlesi Paul\, among others. Several different mediums will be on display\, such as painting\, photography\, drawing\, and sculpture.   \nAs per our new normal as a nation\, the Alfa Art Gallery is also proud to include a virtual version of our exhibition. This fully interactive online experience will allow visitors to view and be involved with the works just as they would in person at the gallery. International artists will be displayed exclusively in the virtual version of the exhibition\, so be sure not to miss it! We apologize for this sudden change and we hope you are all staying safe in these times. \nVirtual Opening Reception: Thursday\, December 3rd\, 2020 @ 6:00 PM \nFeatured Artists:\n \nJamie Greenfield works in this exhibition reflect an ecosystem that encompasses nature\, cosmology\, and the connection between the inner mind and the outer natural world. The objects in her works seem to have a tenuous relation to one another\, yet they are anchored in a structured space. Some of these relations are provided to the viewer while others are more ambiguous\, and may be the result of memory or longing. Greenfield draws upon personal history in combination with observation of light and form\, and often does not have a preconceived plan for a work\, allowing the piece to evolve and process as it is created. She views the moth as a potent metaphor: beautiful and dangerous\, the brevity of its life coupled with its incessant movement towards the light appears to reflect the human existential dilemma.  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nOgunlesi Paul is a graduate of the prestigious Yaba College of Technology in Lagos\, Nigeria\, where he obtained a National Diploma in General Art (majoring in Painting). He worked as an IT student at Defactori Art Studio under Akintunde O. John. He has participated in numerous art workshops\, symposiums\, and exhibitions–such as the OYASAF marble print workshop\, The Artmiabo Art workshop\, The Medallion Art workshop in honor of Kolade Oshinowo’s birthday\, Art in Medicine Fellowship and Workshop 2018\, and Artbridge Project Symposium–both within the country and internationally. Paul has been a member of The Beyond Borders Artists Association of Nigeria since 2017 and began working as an art instructor at THE METAPHOR in Lagos\, Nigeria in 2020. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nPatricia Hynes’s works are made of narratives of ordinary people in natural settings that challenge viewers to reflect upon their own lives. She believes that every reaction is unique and anyone can be a subject of her paintings. She focuses on the moments that are difficult for the eye and memory to capture\, which are pivotal to revealing the dynamic of a painting. To achieve this\, she takes numerous  “action” photographs of subjects\, then transforms these images into a montage that becomes a visual concept. The painting’s visual origins are transformed through composition and pigment\, leading her studies on how people react to life situations. She paints in oils using a variety of small brushes to create expressive visuality and a reading tempo that actively engage viewers in thought and interpretation of her works.  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nPaul Fuentes has been directing national commercials and campaigns at his own production company with Screen Gems. His knowledge and understanding of advertising\, pop culture\, theater\, film\, and classic and modern masters have informed his paintings throughout time. After graduating from Temple University\, Fuentes moved to New York where his paintings and illustrations appeared in national ads and publications including The New York Times. He worked in broadcast advertising and promotion at NBC and later HBO\, where he became a creative director and then began to direct. He soon opened his own production company with Screen Gems where he directed hundreds of national commercials and campaigns. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nStephanie Deshpande is a representational painter living in northern New Jersey\, and is best known for her psychological portraits and narrative paintings. Her works combine a love of realism with personal allegories and create unearth hidden emotions that capture the quiet drama of the world around her. She has showcased her paintings in several noticeable exhibitions such as Painting Today for International Women’s Day 2019 in Barcelona\, Spain\, and American Women Artists for the Tuscon Art Museum in Tuscon Arizona. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nAllison Lewis demonstrates high levels of expressionism in her art influenced by her incredible life experiences. Being a philanthropic individual\, Lewis has crafted art in New Brunswick for those who are homeless\, as well as for those who are mentally ill. She does this out of the kindness of her heart and for the love of art. Her art is demonstrated in many different forms\, by being displayed not only to loved ones\, but to therapy groups and in art classes. The expressions in her drawings have a massive variety: they can express any topic\, whether it be cancer\, love\, or anger. Her inclusiveness of individuals is incredible….. Allison is additionally passionate about showcasing her art to handicapped individuals. Her kindheartedness puts a much heavier meaning into her paintings. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nCarol Radsprecher was born in Brooklyn and remained in New York City for her BFA and MFA in painting at Hunter College. Now\, she has started to explore the stimulating world of photoshop and digital art. Through this medium\, Radsprecher paints different layers with speed and in doing so is able to manipulate and render infinite variations of her abstracted figures. Each image contributes to a series that is both narrative and autobiographical in exploring the first landscape we see in the world– the female body. With her work published and in solo and group exhibitions\, Radsprecher has shown her distorted representations at galleries in the tri-state area beyond including at the Victory Hall Drawing Rooms\, Rogue Community College Gallery\, Grants Pass\, The Alliance Gallery\, Metropolitan Community College’s Next Gallery\, Pierro Gallery\, Garrison Art Center\, and Thompson Park Art Exhibition Series.  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \nSeema Singh Dua has been a sculptor for the past fifteen years in India. Since then\, she has been featured innumerable galleries across the globe and had the distinct honor of being commissioned by the Home Ministry for their museum in Nirman Bhawan\, Delhi\, India. Her artist career began with studying textile designing with a specialization in printing technologies and working as a free-lance textile designer. After many years of developing her sculptural techniques\, Dua has started to emphasize the interior aspect of her pieces by connecting her audience with the inner soul of the sculpture. She considers the aesthetic exterior of art is just a small part of a larger experience. Using the concepts of interior and exterior\, Dua encourages her audience to contemplate the dichotomies of the physical and the cerebral\, reality and imagination\, and the exposed and the hidden.  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nYongshin Cho is a truly global artist who has worked both in Seoul\, South Korea and Paris\, France for the past forty years. Cho began his career at Hongik University with a BFA in painting which was followed by another BFA and MFA at the Université Paris. In 1995\, he was invited to be a part of the International Video and Multimedia Art Festival where he garnered critical acclaim. After that\, Cho continued to become involved in notable projects\, artists residencies\, and teaching with his particular style. He was also featured in many exhibitions in France (such as the Grand Palais\, and Salon of France International Fine-art Society\, Biennale d’art Contemporain)\, Korea (not limited to the Whanki Museum\, Gwangju Biennal\, and PICAF International Contemporary Art Exhibition) and United States (including the Cleveland Internation Drawing Contest & Exhibit\, Queens College\, and Riverside Gallery). His works have been heavily informed by the experience of living through the brutality of the Gwangju Uprising. With that context\, Cho chooses to use his medium to take a critical look at social\, political\, and cultural structures that incur injustice and inequality.   \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \nJung Gun Park a current professor in digital art and ceramics at Dongduk Women’s University\, has been featured in exhibitions in Taiwan\, China\, Japan\, and Korea. After earning a Ph.D. at Hong-Ik University in Seoul in ceramics\, Park has been featured in both group and solo exhibitions throughout Asia and receiving many awards at the Gyeonggi International Ceramic Biennale Competition\, the Hagi Grand Prix in Contemporary Ceramic in Japan\, and Tawain Ceramic Biennale among many others. His art style is focused on the idea of creating something as his father was an architect. Since a young age\, he considered buildings as things that were made versus something that was acquired transactionally. Park uses transportation as the main subject in many of his pieces as a way to critique contemporary rapid industrialization. He challenges his audience to introspect on how humans mediate between the inherent dangers and convenience with modern technology.  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \nMarina Burana was born in Argentina but received her BFA at Taipei National University of Arts in Taiwan where she currently works and resides. Because of her dual residencies\, Burana displayed her works in both Taiwan and Argentina group exhibitions. Since then\, she has also extended her portfolio to Mérida\, México\, and Los Angeles\, USA. Additionally\, Burana has designed the covers of several publications including a variety of magazines\, journals\, and even a poetry book. She enjoys manipulating the texture of oils across surfaces\, toying with the thickness. Burana recently started experimenting with different sources (such as tree bark) to make more natural\, earthy pigments. Along with nature\, she incorporates her own relationship with poetry and memory in her pieces. She utilizes these elements to weave a narrative that is deeply personal but also rooted in the natural world with strong\, full colors.  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \nNick Savides started painting when he was three years old when his mother began teaching how to paint. He continued with his formal education at Brandeis University where he received his BFA with highest honors. He has been featured in many exhibits in New York City\, as well as in Massachusetts\, upstate New York\, Connecticut\, New Jersey\, and Toronto\, Canada. He was also published by Nabi Press and in 2016’s Art Voices Art Books’ in 101 Contemporary Artists as well as John Natsoulas Press. Savides started as a realist oil painter where he began to focus on representing light and its many shades. Many of his paintings use light as a way to explore the concept of space. He uses this relationship in diverse landscapes (ranging from urban to rural)\, depictions of architecture in diverse settings\, and figures in portraits.   \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \nDeirdre Sheean  Was born and raised in New Jersey surrounded by a family of artists\, studied graphic design and illustration at Parsons in the 1970s and has continually renovated and updated her own style. By using stencils\, Sheean reveals intrinsic repetition both in the natural and the man-made with recursive symbols. During this process\, Sheean leaned into her graphic design background by using design systems to organize these motifs. Additionally\, she focuses on contrast to inform the composition of her pieces\, using the variety to allow the subjects to take on a life of their own. Sheean has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions throughout New Jersey and has received many awards at the Mercer County Artist\, Monmouth County Arts Council\, and most recently at the Ellarslie Open 36 in Trenton\, New Jersey.  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nThe Alfa Art Gallery is a non-profit organization devoted to the discovery\, growth\, and support of emerging and established artists within the art community. Since establishment\, Alfa Art has conducted multiple shows featuring local\, national\, and international artists and various materials including oil color\, water color\, mixed media\, sculptures\, photography\, crafts and glass works. As an open art studio – gallery\, Alfa’s exhibiting artists are welcomed to demonstrate their creative process in the space provided\, while collectors and visitors are capable to learn and follow the artists’ technique\, style and motivations. Additionally\, Alfa plays a vital role among local to national visual arts organizations by supporting and presenting artists’ works\, and functions as a space for interdisciplinary art and criticism.
