DESCRIPTION:Exhibition duration: January 28 – February 17\, 2010 Opening Reception: Friday\, January 28 @ 7-10 pm Curator: Jewel Lim LIVE Music: Mike Lawton’s Jazz Genome \nAbout the Exhibition\nThe Alfa Art Gallery launches its first solo exhibition of the year with Karen Eve Friedland’s “Patterns of Sensation\,” a collection of four series. The pieces\, varied in medium and subject matter\, are created with the intention to make the viewer ponder on the people who live in the spaces that she paints. Stylistically reminiscent of Matisse’s flattened figures and Van Gogh’s color schemes\, Friedland’s work emits a dream-like atmosphere while still being familiar and homey to the audience. Delightfully skewed and beautifully paradoxical with disagreeing perspectives in her work\, the viewer is forced to linger awhile and conclude that the spaces depicted are outside reality. \n  \nAbout the Artist\nKaren Eve Friedland received her degree in Journalism from New York University\, MBA from the New York Institute of Technology and studied Interior Design in Pratt Institute. Though she only occasionally works as a consultant of Interior Design\, Friedland adamantly keeps her life creative by teaching art and dedicates most of her time developing her work as artist. Friedland has won many awards and exhibited in New Jersey\, New York\, Washington\, Mississippi and Pennsylvania. \nClick here to learn more about Karen.

DESCRIPTION:This lecture is free and open to the public. Doors open at 5:30pm. Lecture begins at 6:30pm sharp. Following the lecture Dr. Raskin will answer questions and sign selected prints*. \n  \nJoin us for a slide show and lecture by Dr. Ilya Raskin\, Professor of Biology at Rutgers University\, President of the Global Institute for BioExploration and an internationally published photographer. \nDr. Raskin will tie together the art of photography\, the science of biology and a spirit of adventure as his work is projected on a large screen at Alfa Art Gallery in New Brunswick\, NJ. He will share photographs from his visits to remote corners of the world as well as stories of encounters with the people\, animals and plants living there. This lecture coincides with the photography show entitled Landscapes of the Soul\, currently on exhibit at Alfa Art Gallery until 1/27/2011. \n  \nAbout  Dr. Ilya Raskin\nDr. Ilya Raskin is a professor of biology at Rutgers University and president of the Global Institute for BioExploration (GIBEX). Dr. Raskin is a leader in the field of plant-derived medicines and international bioexploration\, conservation and sustainable development. Dr. Raskin’s research is featured in over 160 scientific publications and in numerous popular press articles. He has been listed as one of the 108 most cited researchers in Plant and Animal Science (Institute of Scientific Information) and is a recipient of Albert Shull Award for outstanding contributions to plant biology and the Thomas Alva Edison Patent Awards for revolutionary product innovation and scientific breakthrough. Dr. Raskin was named the Century Innovator in Botany by the U.S. News & World Report. \n \nPhotography has been Dr. Raskin’s passion since childhood. His work enables him to travel to many remote locations and help local communities conserve biodiversity\, preserve traditional knowledge\, and improve health and quality of life. His camera allows him to share these places with the world. His focus on nature is driven by the desire to preserve the memory of its rapidly disappearing wild splendor. DESCRIPTION:Exhibition duration: January 7 – 27\, 2011 Opening Reception: Friday\, January 7 @ 7:00pm Curator: Jewel Lim LIVE Music: Estrada Branca \nAs the first of 2011\, the Alfa Art Gallery is proud to present “Landscape of the Soul\,” a group photography exhibition\, featuring the talents of Brian Dean\, Donald Morgan and Ilya Raskin. \nThe concept of the soul has fascinated many philosophers\, artists\, and intellectuals throughout history and continues to do so presently. In their works\, Dean\, Morgan\, and Raskin use the shutter button to capture a moment for the sake of being able to continuously savor it without answering to time. Grounded in an atmosphere of calm\, the pieces exhibit a transcendentalist view. By compositionally placing figures as part of a larger scene\, the audience is inevitably left in a state of contemplation of their place in the larger\, unconquerable soul of nature. In a more individual rather than communal sense\, the photographs in this exhibition call attention to the quiet passion that the aesthetically-pleasing properties of nature can stir and instill in the human soul upon observation. These works are meant to provoke a closer observation on what is generally missed by the masses\, whether it is through a simple fault of overlooking the finer details of objects that exist in our everyday or the inability to imagine other moments happening simultaneously outside our own in other places. \n  \nAbout the Artists\nBrian Dean graduated from Bard College\, where he studied under distinguished photographers Stephen Shore\, Larry Fink\, and Tim Davis. He received the Eugene Atget Award in Photography\, presented to one student upon graduation by faculty.  Employed by Larry Fink as his Lab Manager\, Dean is skilled in producing high quality prints. Dean has exhibited in group exhibitions at the Morris Museum and the Hudson Opera House. Recently completed is his latest project “Camino de Santiago\,” a series of photographs taken on an eight hundred mile walk on a pilgrimage route through Northern Spain. \nDonald Morgan is the director of the Psychological Services Clinic at Rutgers Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology\, teaches and supervises in the doctoral programs\, and has a psychotherapy and biofeedback practice in Summit. He has studied traditional and digital photography at the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey and has several awards from juried exhibitions including Best in Show.  Morgan’s photographic vision is influenced by his study of yoga and the Buddhist dharma. \nIlya Raskin is a professor of biology of Rutgers University and President of the Global Institute of BioExploration (GIBEX). He works in many countries helping local communities to conserve biodiversity\, preserve traditional knowledge and improve health and quality of life. Early in his career\, he studied with the world’s leading nature photographers. Dr. Raskin’s photographs were published in numerous publications\, including Science\, Nature\, Wildlife Conservation\, Canadian Geographic\, and Natural History.  All profits from the sale of Dr. Raskin’s photography are donated to GIBEX to support global conservation and sustainable utilization of natural resources.

DESCRIPTION:Exhibition duration: December 3 – 23\, 2010 Opening Reception: Friday\, December 3 @ 6:30-10:30pm Curator: Jewel Lim LIVE Music: Estrada Branca \n \nThe Alfa Art Gallery is proud to present the second New Brunswick Art Salon Exhibition of 2010\, featuring the works of Alexandra Pacula\, Jen Mazza\, and Marsha Goldberg. Continuing the tradition of providing the New Brunswick community with talented artists\, the New Brunswick Art Salon ties together three brilliantly creative individuals in an explosion of highs for the viewer. \n  \nAbout the Exhibition\nIn the 18th and 19th century\, Art Salons were the greatest annual or biannual art events in the Western world\, celebrating the farthest advances in academia and the arts. The Alfa Art Gallery\, in order to bridge talented and highly esteemed artists with the New Brunswick public\, holds its own Art Salon exhibition biannually in the Spring and Fall/Winter. As the second of 2010\, this New Brunswick Art Salon exhibition “Aftershock: Lines and Vibrations” closes Alfa’s successful year of promoting the arts. \nThe title of this exhibition “Aftershock: Lines and Vibrations” implies consequence in viewing the works of our three stylistically different artists. Though the works of Alexandra Pacula\, Jen Mazza\, and Marsha Goldberg emerge from different intentions. Their intense marks share a common ground in resonating lingering messages or sentiments into the viewers. Pacula’s work\, containing blurred scenery simplified into humming lines\, drugs the audience into becoming part of a night scene that references to excitement\, opportunities\, seduction\, and anxiety. Mazza’s work\, containing colorful explosions in an otherwise muted image\, trembles with an aftertaste of alarm. Goldberg\, with her untamed lines\, brings a slow realization of an intangible and ineffable feeling. The debut of these three artists at the Alfa Art Gallery will be nothing less than an earthquake! \n  \nAbout the Artists\nAlexandra Pacula earned her BFA from Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University and her MFA from Montclair State University. Originally from Poland\, she migrated to the United States at the age of fourteen and currently works in a studio in Brooklyn. She has successfully exhibited in the United States\, as well as Spain and London. Pacula is also an award recipient of the Robert Sterling Clark Visual Space Award and a Fellow in Painting from the New York Foundation for the Arts. \nThe works of Alexandra Pacula can be best described as an intoxication of gracefully vibrating lines of urban nightlife. Unsettling yet captivating\, her works force viewers to experience the projection of human interactions\, seductions\, and desires on the canvas. Powered by the illusion of speed and the feeling of inebriation\, Pacula molds the state of mind of audiences as they witness the dissolved shapes and blurred streaks. \nJen Mazza received her BA from Mary Washington College and her MFA from the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University. She has exhibited throughout New York and New Jersey. Her most recent paintings were displayed in the one person exhibition “Self Deceit” at the Jersey City Museum and in a solo project at the Aljira Center for Contemporary Art. Mazza has received two Individual Artist Fellowships from the New Jersey State Council of the Arts and praise from the NY Times and the Star Ledger. \nDeeply moved by the destruction wrought by bombings\, the creations of Jen Mazza were made in response to the conflict between Israel and Lebanon. Choosing to use images of idyllic American landscape\, Mazza used the color of water-based mediums on black and white to exemplify the shock is closer to home than one would think. Small in sizes\, the pieces become intimate\, up close\, and personal. \nMarsha Goldberg obtained her BFA from Boston University’s School of Fine Arts and her MFA from Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University. She has exhibited in several galleries and institutions\, including the DeCordova Museum\, the Boston Public Library\, and the Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University. Goldberg was also a founding member of the Brickbottom Artists Building in Somerville\, MA\, one of the country’s largest artists-owned studio buildings. \nThe artworks of Marsha Goldberg strike their audience with intrigue upon first impression. With careful attention to the marks\, the viewer receives a range of sensations equal to the slightly frenzied but eloquent nature of the lines. According to Goldberg\, in their resemblance to text\, these marks are comparable to what a traveler in a foreign country may see in the language\, only understanding it as a decorative line or picture. Beautifully simple yet poignant\, her calligraphic lines are created with an attitude of free association\, often in response to music.
