With chosen works from his portfolio of artistic cycles\, the exhibition will include oil paint\, watercolor\, and mixed media. Kourtev’s art has been described as impressionistic abstraction due to his unique colorist approach. In the years following\, he remained active within the Bulgarian art community and participated in a large number of national and international exhibitions and competitions. He founded the Alfa Art Gallery in 2007 after moving to New Jersey five years prior and is now head Art Director and Resident artist at the gallery. The opening will be held on February 20th 2015 at 108 Church Street\, New Brunswick\, NJ. \nThe gallery is pleased and excited to introduce the Raritan Photographic Society and its members’ works into the New Brunswick community. The exhibition continues to support Alfa’s initiatives to promote art organizations such as RPS. Working with RPS and its diverse members\, the gallery is able to continue to give new talented artists a place of exposure as well as provide tangible products of expression to expand the perspectives of individuals in effort to grow the unity and cultural heritage. \nThe exhibition features works by Barbara Eggermann\, Hilda S. RPS has witnessed the amazing evolution of photography from glass plates to today’s powerful digital photo technology. \nThe society’s photographers are united in a mutual love of photography\, but maintain their individual aspirations as to what they want to achieve with that love. These salons provided artists with the opportunity to exhibit their work alongside their contemporaries while received critical as well as public response. Inspired by the Parisian Salons\, Alfa Art Gallery holds Salons to showcase the talent of local artists to the New Brunswick public. \n2014 will mark the 5th year of these juried exhibitions. The featured pieces will be in either watercolor or mixed media and from a variety of emerging and professional artists. The thematic diversity of the exhibition is coupled with its stylistic variety. While Dustin Garafolo’s paintings are bound together by their photorealistic undertones\, Rita Herzfeld’s pieces resonate with an abstract quality. Joanne Amantea also embodies this abstraction through the alluring composition of each of her watercolors. Juana Rodriguez’s creates a similarly enticing effect through the raw emotion of her subjects. Emotion is also portrayed in Karen Terry’s ink on paper works\, although this artist does so without the help of color. \nNot only do these artists differ from one another in style\, but there is also variation in form among each artist. He is also a well-respected educator\, currently serving as Area Coordinator of Jazz Studies at the Rutgers University Mason Gross School of the Arts here in New Brunswick. In fact\, more than 2.2 million people are currently locked up in the U.S.—a number that’s more than quadrupled since 1980. But sadly\, the lives lived behind bars are all too often invisible to those on the outside. Prison Obscura\, curated by Pete Brook\, sheds light on such experiences and the prison-industrial complex as a whole by showcasing rarely seen surveillance\, evidentiary\, and prisoner-made photographs. \nThe exhibition was organized by the joint effort of Alfa Art Gallery and Rutgers University’s IRW (Institute for Research on Women). IRW is also hosting “Marking Time – Prison Arts & Activism Conference“\, which is scheduled to take place October 8-10 in New Brunswick.  \nThe exhibit\, sponsored by IRW and on display at Alfa Art Gallery from October 7 through 10\, encourages visitors to ask why tax-paying\, prison-funding citizens rarely get the chance to see such images\, and what roles such pictures play for those within the system. \nAlyse Emdur’s collected letters and prison visiting room portraits from across the nation and Robert Gumpert’s recorded audio stories from within the San Francisco jail system provide an opportunity to see\, read\, and listen to subjects in the contexts of their incarceration. Juvenile and adult prisoners in different workshops led by Steve Davis\, Mark Strandquist\, and Kristen S. Wilkins perform for the camera\, reflect on their past\, describe their memories\, and self-represent through photographs. Prison Obscura will also feature work made in partnership with the City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program. Men from Graterford Prison who are affiliated with both its own Restorative Justice Program and Mural Arts’ Restorative Justice Group are collaborating to create a mural for the exhibition. \nThe exhibit moves between these intimate portrayals of life within the prison system to more expansive views of legal and spatial surveillance in works like Josh Begley’s manipulated Google Maps’ API code and Paul Rucker’s animated videos\, which offer a “celestial” view of the growth of the prison system. Prison Obscura builds the case that Americans must come face to face with these images to grasp the proliferation of the U.S. prison system and to connect with those it confines. \nPete Brook is a Portland\, Oregon-based freelance writer and curator interested in social justice and the politics of visual culture. He writes and edits Prison Photography (prisonphotography.org)\, a website that analyzes imagery produced within\, and about\, prisons\, with a focus on the American prison industrial complex. Prison Photography has been recognized as one of the best photography blogs by LIFE.com\, The British Journal of Photography\, and The Daily Beast. Brook holds a masters degree in art history from the University of St Andrews and a master’s degree in art gallery and museum studies from the University of Manchester. The thinness of Alison Hooper’s sculptures\, made of transparent packing tape\, contrasts the rich layering of images in Peter Alessandria’s long exposure photographs. Elizabeth Perez Diner communicates her open-mindedness not only by mixing media but also by pulling her inspiration from various time periods. In this way\, Perez Diner transports her viewers through a journey of time and the accompanying series of emotions. Michael Fenton’s oil paintings recount snapshots of history through the expression in the faces of his subjects. Anastasia Mancuso works in pastels to document the historical square “Place de Concorde” in Paris. The exhibition also displays the works of another artist\, Takayo Futurama\, who also works in oil to generate her own unique perspective based on universal themes. \nThese fourteen artists are similarly united in their effort to recreate the beauty in nature. Nat Bernard has channeled her efforts to capture the effortless beauty of nature in both her ink piece and oil painting. Similarly\, Leina’ala Schwartz captures the splendor of tranquil landscapes and structures in her oil paintings in the exhibition. Mike Dziomba encourages viewers to walk down his “Shadowy Path” through his mastery of acrylics. Chris Siasat also makes use of acrylics – allegedly his favorite medium – to play with unexpected angles in his paintings of familiar scenes. Similarly\, Adela Lezama achieves color depth in her work “Apple Basket” through her mastery of acrylics. Susanna Anastasia also depicts fruit in her oil painting “Jersey Fresh\,” in which she skillfully emphasizes the reflection of color between objects. \nThe gritty impasto texture of Margareta Greeley’s “Dancing Birches” gives depth and strength to the expressive dance of the trees. Mike Fenton\, on the other hand\, achieves a rich expressiveness in his oil paintings through the raw emotion conveyed on the faces of his subjects. Darlow is a photographer\, teacher\, and digital imaging consultant based in Piscataway\, NJ. \nBenjamin Saulnier is a recent graduate of the School of Visual Arts\, where he studied Fine and Studio arts. Benjamin’s work used both paint and fabric and addresses the role of gender in both the history of painting and the projected future in which materials and styles of creating art aren’t confined to gender roles. \nBrittney Lyons is a senior at Drew University\, where she majors in Studio Art with a concentration in painting. Her work explores nature and landscape and hopes to create a greater experience and connection between her subject and viewer. \nChris Ernst is a self taught artist who draws inspiration from pop art\, as well as from the places that he has lived\, including Indiana\, Virginia\, and New Jersey. He is “intrigued by the deconstruction of pop art through the process of human error.” \nGabe Chiarello\, is currently a Painting major at Mason Gross\, and says that he has always been driven by the process itself\, focusing on the material objects as the subjects of his paintings. \nKatherine Schneider\, a Photography major\, also at Mason Gross\, draws influence from film stills\, working with themes such as possession\, and time. Her pieces begin with photographs\, which she then adds to with a variety of mediums to add both literal and figurative layers to her images. \nKelly Lalama is a student at Maryland Institute College of Art\, where she studies both Illustration and Creative Writing. Her influences include film and literature\, and her more illustrative works often deal with the relationship between viewer and subject. She aims to create specific moods or themes in each work by selecting specific color palettes or lighting for each individual subject. \nLeah Schoenlank\, a recent graduate from Drew University\, where she studied Studio Art\, creates collages that combine both representational and abstract imagery\, focusing on figural\, textural\, and geometric element. It seems as though it will be never-ending\, that this emptiness will last forever. Then\, as if in an instant\, the snow melts\, the earth warms\, and color and animation resurges life into new. Vesselin Kourtev’s latest work\, exhibited in his solo show Spring\, depicts just this. Vesselin keeps his own unique style\, but alters it slightly by placing his emphasis on contrast of white desolate plains and heavy pops of color. \nVesselin Kourtev’s current solo show is the most dynamic yet. His use of color actively renders vibrancy and an element of surprise. These works can also be compared to Lynda Benglis in her unusual use of blending of organic imagery. There is a balance about his work which is complementary and dualistic. The viewer can sense a feeling of mysticism and symbolism such as feeling the sense of aquatic motion. \nThe colors and forms rise and fall in a mix and mingle of billowy motion that brings life to sinuous shapes and forms. This exhibit will celebrate and commemorate the role of women in the jazz movement.  \nThe photographers capture the enthusiastic moments of the “Women in Jazz”.  George Wirt is a veteran photographer who shoots jazz musicians capturing their passion and presence in a  photo-journalistic approach.  Tony Graves depicts intense and expressive shots and is a freelance photographer at New Jersey Jazz Society Magazine\, WBGO Jazz 88.3FM\, and Allen & Partners.  Philip Dowdell photographs images that challenge the musician\, model\, and photographer to create and “look and feel” of magic and history in each shot.  Anthony Johnson renders his subjects in intimate fashions and relationships with contrast between black and white and some color photographs.  The artists in “Women In Jazz” are each highlighted in the exhibition for their unique styles of representation of their subjects.   Michael Fenton is an esteemed artist using oil to capture the ladies of jazz in “After Midnight I” and “Nina Simone Sings Mississippi Goddamn”. Kelly Coyle is a painter and teacher using mixed media in “Ramified Rythms” which illuminates her gift. Judy Leeds’ “Memphis Minnie” is rendered in pastel. She works with oils and acrylics as well to show her “up-beat\, colorful and personal view of the world around us” and their fleeting impressions. The artists in this exhibition include Lanre Buraimoh\, Kimberly Camp\, Erica Jones\, Ibou Ndoye\, Roberta Rose\, and lended art from Vera Raskin from The Raskin Family collection.  \n Foreshadowing to this exciting exhibition\, guests of Alfa will experience the diverse culmination of the works of these artists. The Batik work of Lanre Buraimoh\, and his dual characteristic style is formed by his training under the tutelage of his parents and his reaction to Yoruban Society.  Kimberly Camp has shown her work in over 100 solo and group exhibitions including the Smithsonian.  Upon viewing her handmade doll “Shepherd’s Kept Watch” the guest can feel the solemn presence the piece brings.   Erica Jones’ Mural work won awards for her painting in Highland Park\, which ties nicely together New Brunswick and African-American Heritage. The City of New Brunswick is an eclectic mix of a Cultural Hub\, where diversity is celebrated and enjoyed. There will be six awards including: Best in Show\, two Awards of Excellence\, and three Awards of Merit. The exhibition will run from July 1st to August 15th with a reception held on July 13th from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. \nM-SHAC is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the development of local artists. It was founded in 1940 and is the oldest art association in northern and central Jersey with more than 150 members hailing from cities and towns across the state as well as nearby New York and Pennsylvania. The members mainly work in oil\, watercolor\, pastels\, collage\, sculpture\, and photography. From the photography of Mike McKenna to the paintings of Dorothy Siclare and Michael Fenton\, there will be an array of mediums in this exhibition. \nThe host of the exhibition\, Alfa Art Gallery\, works to serve the community by integrating the visual arts with the surrounding area. Vesselin Kourtev's Solo Exhibition Opening DESCRIPTION:Vesselin Kourtev Solo Exhibition Oil Color and Mixed Media Opening reception: June 1st   \nExhibition Duration: June 1st-June 29th  \n \nAlfa Art Gallery is proud to announce “Reminiscent Brushstrokes\,” the upcoming exhibition of Alfa Art Gallery’s founder and resident artist\, Vesselin Kourtev.  Following his last exhibition\, “The Messages\,” Vesselin continues to explore the abstract world he has created that connects what is seen by the eyes and the mind.  With the continued use of organic shapes and heavy references to traditionalist styles of the past\, Vesselin brings a new perspective in this exhibition by taking his paintings further into a spiritual realm.  With ethereal figures intertwining themselves within powerful strokes of vibrant color\, the viewer questions the relationship with the ghosts of the past and the present.  It is rare to see an artist merge figurative work with abstract work as seamlessly as Vesselin.  He creates energetic spaces in his paintings\, with faces peeking out from broad planes of lively color; figures emerge from sweeping abstract landscapes\, connecting the past and the present.  Vesselin’s work is harmonious – controlled but spontaneous\, abstract but organic\, and extremely true to self-expression.  His work appears to be sure of itself and meticulously thought out\, but there is still that quality of conceptualism that lends to its modern innovation – a modern innovation that nods to the past and looks to the future. \nA formally taught artist\, Vesselin’s paintings are heavily inspired by the ideals of the Symbolist and the Arts and Crafts Movements of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Whereas the first part to our spring salon\, “Quiet Moments\,” featured artists who worked primarily in water color\, in “Infinite Layers” the artists in the show combine the traditional painterly materials of water color\, oil\, and acrylic with a variety of outside materials. Another strong characteristic of the work in Infinite Layers is the trend towards abstraction. Artists like Chris Kapsaroff\, Lauren Curtis\, Lea Cattan\, Miriam Lefkowitz\, Yelena Budylin\, and Jane Dell all work with abstraction in varying capacities\, often combining it with figural imagery to create works that juxtapose familiarity and novelty. This bent towards abstraction in “Infinite Layers” also produces an overall effect much different to that of “Quiet Moments\,” where the show is largely comprised of town\, nature\, and landscape scenes. In “Infinite Layers” the collective direction of the show is much different\, as each artist employs a different technique to obscure or estrange their particular subject. For instance\, in Renée Wysocki Levin’s work commonplace objects such as sea shells are magnified and rendered with extreme detail and clarity\, the effect being one that brings a new\, heightened awareness of a relatively commonplace object. Levin’s work is just one example of the exciting work being shown in Infinite Layers\, a show that we hope will demonstrate the talent of each artist. \nAt Alfa Art Gallery’s second spring salon exhibition\, “Infinite Layers\,” there will be\, along with the various works in mixed media and watercolor\, a group of three sculptures provided by the New Brunswick Public Sculpture organization. \nSpirit of 1776 – Edward Kolwicz \nThe NBPS is a not-for-profit organization\, like Alfa Art Gallery\, whose mission is to commission and place public art throughout the city to enhance the quality of life and encourage cultural tourism and commerce. The organization will commission a wide range of styles\, primarily for outdoor display. The sculpture being exhibited in “Infinite Layers” was donated to NBPS in 2008 and is a group of three sculptures by the Metuchen based artist Edward Kolwicz. These life size sculptures are created from automobile parts and scrap metal\, most of which was donated by the Charter Machine Company. In honor of the 1976 bicentennial Kolwicz sculpted three 6-foot high Revolutionary War soldiers\, two of which are outfitted with drums and the third with a flute. Kolwicz has skillfully sculpted these figures in positions that imply movement and that add to their liveliness. The Drummer was perched on top of an aquatic float in 1980 along the Raritan River for the City’s Tercentennial Festival\, reminding spectators of New Brunswick’s role in the Revolution. These sculptures fit in nicely with the rest of the exhibition\, in which many artists make use of irregular and sometimes surprising materials. The exhibition\, curated by Jeffrey Wechsler\, will be open to the public from March 1st to March 29th. \nThe Alfa Art Gallery is a non-profit institution serving the New Brunswick community with exhibitions and multidisciplinary arts related activities since Jan 2008.  In this exhibition\, the Alfa Art Gallery celebrates the wide-ranging spirit of public service in the arts by featuring another non-profit gallery –  the Sylvia Wald and Po Kim Art Gallery\, located at 417 Lafayette Street\, in Manhattan.  \nThe common bonds between the two non-profit galleries are seen in their mutually shared activities and ideals: \n \n\nPresenting established and emerging artists and thematic group exhibitions\, including artists of regional\, national\, and international scope\nAdvancing art education through the engagement of interns pursuing careers in the visual arts\, communications\, design\, and related fields\nOffering educational and cultural programming for the general public\n\nThe Sylvia Wald and Po Kim Art Gallery\, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization\, was founded by Korean-born American artist Po Kim and his wife\, American artist Sylvia Wald. The Sylvia Wald and Po Kim Art Gallery’s primary mission is to preserve\, maintain and perpetuate the legacy of the founders’ uniquely accomplished artistic careers and to exhibit the founders’ art works to promote and widen its public appreciation.  In 2009\, working with local and international cultural institutions\, the Gallery began to host special temporary art exhibitions covering a wide array of themes and media\, and now maintains an active schedule of such displays. \n \nDue to the significant status held by Po Kim within the field of modern Korean art\, as well as his continuing professional relationship with his native land\, the internship program at the Wald/Kim Gallery has focused on students from Korea who are pursuing degrees in the visual arts at institutions in the metropolitan area.  This exhibition presents work by Sylvia Wald and Po Kim\, along with work by six individuals who currently work at the Gallery: the interns Woojae Kang\, Tina Hyun Jin Kim\, Winter Gyeoul Kim\, Hwa Jin Lee\, and Suji Park – and also Sumin Hong\, the Gallery Manager of the Wald/Kim Gallery\, who had been an intern.  The works by the interns offer an intriguing look into the development of artists during the early years of their careers\, in media including painting\, drawing\, printmaking\, and sculpture.  In subject\, the works range from pure abstraction to mysteriously surreal figuration. \nThe art displayed by Po Kim and Sylvia Wald comprises a very small sampling from the many styles and techniques used by the artists during their long and productive lives.  Po Kim\, born in Korea in 1917\, came to New York in 1957; Sylvia Wald\, born in Philadelphia in 1915\, had been living in New York since 1937.  They met in New York in 1968 and married soon after.  Wald passed way in 2011; Kim continues to live and work in Manhattan.  \n \nDuring his first years in America\, Kim showed a direct engagement with his new art environment\, embracing Abstract Expressionism.  Yet his work was also visibly suffused with the aesthetic of his Korean heritage.  This is especially evident in the fluid\, calligraphic movements of his brushstrokes in a series of more than 180 small paintings on paper Kim produced from 1960-62 that feature independent and overlapping swirls\, thick and thin rapid gestures\, and elegantly dispersed blots.  The paintings concentrate within reduced surfaces the energy seen in his contemporary large canvases.  Never satisfied to work in one method and thus forgoing a signature style\, Kim abruptly shifted his approach in the 1970s\, creating highly realistic still life drawings of fruits and vegetables\, meticulously rendered in colored pencil\, such as Pear 3 and Celery 3 in the present exhibition.  From the 1980s onward\, Kim practiced variations on expressionist figuration and abstraction. \nSylvia Wald was always something of an artistic polymath\, concentrating on a particular medium – printmaking\, painting\, sculpture and assemblage – through stretches of time. During a stay in Moscow\, Nina became an active member of the International Woman’s Club\, where she headed the Moscow Art Group.
