DESCRIPTION:Exhibition Duration: October 2\, 2020 – November 28\, 2020  \nOpening Reception: Friday\, October 16 @ 6:00 PM \nAlfa Art Gallery invites you to the exhibition “Lifted” which features two prominent artists: John Hawaka and Vesselin Kourtev. Not only will this show exhibit the work of two skilled artists with prolific careers\, “Lifted” is in honor and in memory of John Hawaka\, and will celebrate his art and his life. This two – person show will also be a commemoration of the artists’ long-time friendship and their admiration for each other’s art work. “Lifted” will encompass a physical exhibition of Vesselin Kourtev’s work and a virtual exhibition of John Hawaka’s pieces\, run simultaneously from October 2\, 2020 through November 28\, 2020.  \n  \nLifted: Vesselin Kourtev & John Hawaka Virtual Exhibition\n \n\nClick on the images (artwork and graphics) to bring up an information text box (the “wall label”).\nClick different areas of the floor to “walk” around. Footprints will appear on the ground to show where you will move to.\nClick\, hold\, and drag your mouse to rotate or “turn your head”.\nUse the arrow keys on your keyboard to move forward\, backwards\, and side to side.\n\n  \nThe Space Between Interactive Gallery\n \n \n  \nJohn Hawaka began painting one day when he was forced to stay inside Kilmer Job Corps Center in Edison due to a snow storm. He picked up a paintbrush to pass time\, and never put it down since then. Over the years he experimented with different techniques and mediums such as acrylics. Soon enough\, he discovered his talent with rare lacquer painting techniques and became one of the few artists in North America who use them. Most of the time\, Hawaka did not prioritize a specific subject for his paintings. First\, he would choose a color and focus on the design. He typically preferred to paint vertically rather than horizontally. His inspiration arose from the classical and jazz music that would always be playing in the background. Hawaka was a creative and prolific artist and many of his paintings and prints are in the collections of companies and private owners across the country. One of his paintings is even being used as the logo for The New Brunswick Jazz Project. Hawaka has also been part of many one-man shows such as: Rapid Graphics Gallery\, DeLann Gallery\, and Hyatt Regency Hotel. His top award would be the “Nature in Abstraction”\, from Black Diamond Arts Council. \nVesselin Kourtev\, the Founder and Artistic Director of the Alfa Art Gallery\, was born in Bulgaria where he started his successful and international career in the arts. Kourtev has been described as a “unique neo-symbolist in abstract disguise” as his paintings often depict allegorical landscapes framing a relevant cause or interaction such as climate change or other environmental issues. He primarily works in oil paint and watercolors\, which allow him to design illusionistic backgrounds to his narrative themes. Because he studied at a traditional art school and academy\, he developed a unique and distinguished style. Along with studying the work of old masters\, Kourtev admires the art of ancient Egyptians and their architectural achievements. Kourtev has had many solo exhibitions since the Alfa Art Gallery’s founding in 2007. Prior to the opening of his own gallery\, Kourtev was featured in various solo and group exhibitions throughout Bulgaria\, Switzerland\, Germany\, Greece\, France\, Malta\, Turkey\, the Netherlands\, and the United States–specifically in New Jersey and New York. Many of his works are still featured by galleries and private collectors in the aforementioned locations. \nAlfa Art Gallery is a non-profit organization devoted to the discovery\, growth\, and support of emerging and established artists within the art community. Since its establishment\, Alfa has conducted numerous shows featuring local\, national\, and international artists that explore a variety of media: oil color\, watercolor\, mixed media\, sculpture\, photography\, crafts\, and glassworks. Exhibiting artists are granted the opportunity to demonstrate their creative process in Alfa’s open studio and gallery\, thus affording collectors and visitors the ability to learn about and follow the artists’ techniques\, styles\, and motivations. Additionally\, Alfa plays a vital role among local and national visual arts organizations by supporting and presenting artists’ works\, and functions as a space for interdisciplinary art and art criticism. Each season\, Alfa invites professional art curators to provide criticism and guidance to artists and artworks on display to help collectors and patrons identify works that express their particular vision or purpose.

DESCRIPTION:Event Date: March 8\, 2019 at 6:30pm at Alfa Art Gallery\, 108 Church Street\, New Brunswick NJ. \nThe Alfa Art Gallery welcomes everyone to the Ceremony for the New Brunswick Art Salon 2018 Award Winners\, judged by Rocco Scary. This event will take place on March 8\, 2019. We will announce first\, second\, and third place award winners as well as all honorable mentions. \nThe New Brunswick Art Salons’ main aim is to build relationships and connections between local artists and the community. Talented artists from diverse backgrounds have been drawn into these exhibitions for the past eight years. \nThe New Brunswick Art Salons consists of three unique showings of oil color\, water color and mixed media artworks. \nThe Oil Color and Mixed Media exhibit\, “An Expanse of Expressionism” was held on April – June. The featured artwork boasted a wide array of visual aesthetics ranging from the impressionistic to the abstract style that expressionism is renowned for. \nOn June – August\, the “Visceral and Visionary” exhibition featured fine art from twenty artists specializing in all media. \nFrom October – December Alfa hosted “Transfiguration of the Form: Watercolor and Mixed Media” which featured nineteen local and international artists who specialized in the use of water color\, gel\, charcoal\, oil pastels and more. \nThe Alfa Art Gallery was delighted to have Rocco Scary as a judge of the New Brunswick Art Salon 2018 exhibitions. An active multi-disciplinary artist by himself\, Rocco Scary always brings exceptional perspective to the NBAS 2018 exhibitions. Rocco Scary is also an accomplished denizen of the art world accruing multiple awards and accolades from the New Jersey State Arts Council Fellowship to the Essex County Arts Council.

Feel free to bring food and snacks to share with everyone\, and don’t forget your dancing shoes! \n  \nWhy do we celebrate May 24th? \n With an impressive celebration history of 162 years\, May 24th recognizes the Slavonic Alphabet\, as well as Bulgarian Enlightenment and Culture.  This is the longest running holiday in late Bulgarian history. \nOn May 11th\, 1851\, a celebration was organized at the eparchy school “St St Kiril and Methody” in the town of Plovdiv by Bulgarian linguist and writer Nayden Gerov. This day now honors the Saint brothers\, Kiril and Methody\, founders of the Slavonic Alphabet. Since 1857\, this day has been celebrated every year in towns such as Plovdiv\, Shumen\, Tsarigrad\, and Lom. Currently\, May 11th is celebrated as a Church Holiday of the Saint brothers Kiril and Methody.  This day expresses the striving spirit of the Bulgarian people towards their Church and Political independence as well as their eagerness for national and economic progression. \nMay 24th is a holiday in itself\, a day of spiritual uprising overviewing Bulgaria’s cultural and scientific achievements. DESCRIPTION:Join us on Friday\, May 25th at 7:30pm to celebrate the Bulgarian Education and Culture\, and Slavonic Literature Day. We will start out with a performance by Bulgarian-American children and then continue with Bulgarian music and dances. \nFeel free to bring snacks/food to share with everyone and don’t forget your dancing shoes. \n  \nWhy do we celebrate May 24th? \nMay 24 is the Day Of Slavonic Alphabet\, Bulgarian Enlightenment and Culture. This day has been celebrated for 161 years now – no other holiday was so long celebrated in Bulgarian late history. \nOn May 11 1851 a celebration was organized by Nayden Gerov at the eparchy school `St St Kiril and Methody` in the town of Plovdiv. This was the first time to be marked the Day of the Saint brothers Kiril and Methody – the creators of Slavonic Alphabet. Since 1857 this day has been celebrated every year in Plovdiv\, Tsarigrad\, Shumen and Lom and it was no by accident that May 11 was chosen – this is the common Church Holiday of the two Saints. \n24th of May is a Day that has no analogue among the other nations – the Day of literature\, enlightenment\, culture. SUMMARY:2012 - April 28 - Rutgers Day & NJ Folk Fest
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, April 28th\, Alfa will participate in the famous spring celebration called Rutgers Day\, that is a University wide event which happens every year and is incredibly popular in the area. With tons of great activities planned by various Rutgers departments and local business\, great food and good music\, it is the place to  be! \nOur booth will be in Voorhees Mall behind the Zimmerli Art Museum. We’ll be there between 10am-4pm. Come check out our booth! Our interns have been busy painting our banner and preparing for the event. We plan on having a Communal painting project\, where we will have 1 large canvas divided into lots of little squares and our Director and resident artist Vesselin Kourtev will start it off by painting the first square. Visitors can then paint the next square with something related to the previous square. This way in the end it will be like a running comic strip painted by many different people.  \nYou can follow us live on Twitter the day of the event – http://www.twitter.com/AlfaArtGallery. \nAlso dont forget to check out the NJ Folk Festival happening at the same time on Cook/Douglas campus.
