DESCRIPTION:Open Studio – Meet the Artists: December 14 @ 6 pm – 10 pmExhibition Duration: November 30- December 22 \n \nOn December 14th\, there will be an Open Studio event where the artists will be present to discuss their processes and techniques… \nKen Hamilton\, Margie Samuels\, and Hana Aviv will show realistic watercolor paintings. Jo Bradney and Leroy White are exhibiting equally realistic paintings; Jo\, focusing on objects\, and Leroy\, on figures.  Agop Gemdjian\, Alyce Gottesman\, Chinyee\, Dion Hitchings\, Lisa Pressman\, Miklos Sipos and Tatiana L.Sougakova will also be showing works in a highly abstracted style and will encourage the audience to take a step into their personal thoughts\, as they create a scene directly from their minds. Francesca Azzara\, Nanci Hersh\, Jennifer Hines and Wade Miller will also be showing works that utilize an abstracted style; they use lines and shapes to create abstract forms in their works of art. Between these two drastic ends of the spectrum\, falls the works of several of Alfa’s exhibiting artists. Colleen Gahrmann\, Lea Cattan\, and Joanie San Chirico include identifiable forms and objects from everyday life in their abstracted paintings.  Ethan Sherman and Judith Cantor will be showing three dimensional works. DESCRIPTION:Join us for open studio on Nov 16th to meet the artists and learn about their art technique and philosophy.\nExhibition Duration: November 1 – 27\, 2012 Open Tue-Sat\, 11 am – 6 pm\, Thursday 11 am – 8:30 pm  \n“United We Stand” is a juried group exhibition\, inspired by the historical salons of the 18th and 19thcenturies.  The Alfa Art Gallery provides an opportunity for upcoming and established artists to exhibit their works side by side in a show celebrating the diversity of art.  From traditional painting to abstract installations\, the works of these ten unique artists utilize a broad spectrum of media to showcase the capabilities of the visual arts to express each person’s individual thoughts and philosophies.  The artists\, Phil Carroll\, Bruce Garrity\, and Leah K. Tomaino\, each provide abstracted\, yet realistic\, views of the world with their compositions of outdoor scenes.  Then\, Joanie Gagnon San Chirico\, Dion Hitchings\, Marie Sturken\, and Ethan Sherman demonstrate an abstract approach to viewing their environment\, in which they utilize bright colors and geometric shapes.  The remaining artists\, Colleen Gahrman\, Nanci Hersh\, and Agop Gemdjian\, all work in two and three-dimensional media to create works that tell a narrative or comment on the world around them.  Exhibited together\, these works create a microcosm of the diverse art world\, showing that the most different people and works come together to create the culture and world in which we reside. \n  \nAgop Gemdjian works in both two- and three-dimensional media.  Highly abstracted figures are thought provoking and stimulate the viewer in a unique way.  His work offers a look into his life and opinions on many different subjects and issues. \nBruce Garrity currently focuses on the woodland interior and captures realistic moments with a slightly abstracted style.  Bright colors and sharp contrasts accentuate the scenes he creates with his skilled hand. \nColleen Gahrman works in photography and college\, but she specializes in sculpture.  She uses ceramic sculpture to depict narrative scenes from her personal life\, experiences\, and environment. \nDion Hitchings utilizes geometric shapes and bright colors in his paintings to create figures.  The abstracted works lead the viewer into Hitching’s mind and imagination. \nEthan Sherman uses geometric patterns and blocks of colors in his 2-D and 3-D works.  He pushes the boundaries by adding texture to his composition with different materials\, and also by expanding his work into the space of the viewer. \nJoanie Gagnon San Chirico creates abstract paintings with both the beauty of the world and the impermanence of beauty in mind. \nLeah K. DESCRIPTION:June 24\, 2011 || “FERTILE\, FRIGHTFUL\, DIVINE!”Exhibition duration: June 24 – July 22\, 2011Opening Reception: Friday\, June 24 @ 6:30-10:30pmLIVE Jazz Music: New World Order \nOpen Studio/Lecture: Friday\, July 8th @ 6:30pm \n  \nThe Alfa Art Gallery proudly presents “FERTILE\, FRIGHTFUL\, DIVINE!” – African tribal masks and sculptures from the Raskin Collection. \nThe collection was assembled over 30 years by the late tribal art collector and dealer Yuri Raskin and his son\, Ilya Raskin\, who is a professor at Rutgers University and a wildlife photographer.  It is his dramatic photographs of African wildlife that accent the displayed works of African art.  Art pieces from the Raskin collection have been sought for art installations\, interior decoration\, private collections\, TV and theater production\, as well as inspiration\, reflection and research. \nThe Raskins’ educational site www.zyama.com is one of the largest and well used on-line information sources on African art assembled over the past 15 years. Their gallery www.arttribal.com is a successful family owned business. Its clients represent more that 20 countries on five continents and include artists\, anthropologists\, collectors\, architects\, art teachers\, decorators\, films studios as well as practitioners of African religions. \nFeel the passion and magic emanating from fertility statues\, nail studded fetishes\, awesome ceremonial masks\,  power staffs\, decorated shields and chiseled wooden doors replete with symbols of beauty\, strength\, healing and divination. \n  \nThe Exhibit will focus on the following \n\nstatues and masks used in fertility\, healing and divination rites mostly in Sub Saharan and West African tribes;\nbronze Benin style sculptures and other objects of power and beauty;\nphotographs of people\, landscapes and wild life in Africa.\n\n  \nGoal of the Exhibit \nTo highlight various aspects of African tribal masks and sculptures which – in ways similar to and yet distinctly different from western art – are both ritual objects for practitioners – and objects of decoration\, research\, or artistic inspiration for others.

If you missed the opening reception on April 22nd\, this is not only the perfect chance to see the amazing artworks of Rita Herzfeld\, Peter Arakawa\, Carlos Frias\, and Dara Alter\, but also a chance to see one of them at work!” \n  \n \nAbout the Artist\nDara Alter obtained her degree in Studio Art from the University of Guelph. Heavily influenced by her cultural ties\, she paints her memories of Israel in order to examine the North American Jewish nostalgia for an idealized nation. In the last five years\, she travelled to South America\, North America\, Asia\, and the Middle East\, which additionally influenced her works. Alter is most interested exploring location and place as it relates to her personal experiences and uses a specific palette that corresponds to the scenery in a particular region. She has exhibited in Minnesota\, New York and New Jersey in the United States as well as in Toronto\, Ontario in Canada.”
