Alfa is excited to introduce new artists\, as well as previously exhibited artists: John Hawaka\, Sean Carney\, and Merrille Drakulich. A wide variety of mediums include oil\, lacquer\, wood stain\, relief\, and acrylic. The contrast of styles\, from abstraction\, to surrealism and more traditional realism\, gives the show a dynamic eye of contemporary fine art. These carefully selected twelve artists bring to Alfa their unique spin on the artistic process and a new take on universal concepts. \nThe exhibition has no admission fees and is open to the public. An Opening Reception will be held Friday\, November 13th @ 7:30pm. There will be a live musical performance by the New Brunswick Chamber Orchestra and refreshments will be served. Musicians: (Elizaveta Laskova: Violin ; Nina Vieru: Violin; Ana Tsinadze: Viola; and Jordan Enzinder: Cello) \n  \nExhibiting Artists: Curatorial Notes \nAdel Strauss: She uses a variety of mixed media as a way to reinterpret themes from the past through today’s visual and cultural lens. The unique frames in conjunction with collaging magazines give these materials a new meaning and purpose. \nBarry Altman\, M.D.: He was previously a surgeon who began painting after retirement. Although most of his work is abstract\, he also includes representational objects that are highlighted through his use of collage and relief artistry. His subject matter varies from tigers to naturalistic diorama scenes\, all bearing interesting Latin titles. \nJan ten Broeke:  His work incorporates biomorphic objects\, shapes and forms that resemble those which are found in nature. His use of color combined with the round\, natural forms of these objects\, evokes a balance between organism and structure. \nJane Zamost: Her work is driven by emotions and dreams\, which are captured at the moment of their formation. She uses a variety of colors and different forms of applying paint to display the emotion she wishes to capture. \nJohn Hawaka: He uses lacquer as his primary medium because of its reaction to water\, resulting in an explosion of forms across the canvas. Hawaka is inspired by life\, his subject matter is capturing the burst of color in an aesthetically pleasing manner\, as it expands towards the edges. \nSean Carney: He received a BFA with a focus on Portrait and Figure Painting from New Jersey City University\, and has also studied at the School of Visual Arts and The Fashion Institute of Technology in NY. Carney uses wood stain and dremel for his work. He experiments with water based stains as to expand his palette and texture. The overall tone of his work embodies some variance of shades and color. \nSarah Smith: She works with mainly oil\, in an attempt to focus on endangered species that she considers to be works of art themselves. She hopes to achieve a sense of protection within the canvas as to help the viewer reconsider their relationship with wildlife. When painting a person\, nature tends to be her central focus rather than the figure. \nRitch Gaiti: He primarily works in oils with mixed media like sand to give a sense of the setting and time. Focusing on western themes\, he attempts to capture not only movement but also the heart and soul of the subject. He includes a strong use of impasto to add dimension as well as the use of yellow and orange to add an antiquated feeling. He juxtaposes the time and culture from the far past with shades of blue. \nRia Glassman: She studied studio art at Drew University and is inspired by her life drawing classes at the Fashion Institute of Technology in NY. Focusing on the female nude\, she practices the discipline approach working best with structured pre ordained forms. She uses dark colors juxtaposed with skin tones\, giving little visibility to the face by the portrayal of hands over the woman’s face or turning her body away from the viewer. \nPia de Girolamo: She grew up in NYC yet traveled to Italy to study paintings privately and continued to explore fine arts in college. However\, she became a physician and shortly after leaving the practice began to experiment with large spaces of color. She works mainly with large charcoal marks as well as working with drawing and painting to characterize the movement of lines and swirls. The dark violent lines juxtapose to the soft color. \nMiriam Stern: She works with highly abstracted versions of objects\, places\, and people from the photographs she takes. These photographs include places the artist has visited\, becoming a new place with each manipulation. She begins with photography and uses a combination of digital manipulation\, traditional printmaking\, and painting. After creating unique prints\, she uses oil paint to give a more abstract feel. \nMerrilee Drakulich: Attaining both a BFA and an MA in studio art\, Merrilee uses large portions of color to approach the subject matter. With a high contrast of light and dark\, she uses a loose application of paint adhering to prominence of her brushwork. She works with close views of objects\, striving to avoid a full view in its entirety. Much of her influence derives from Caribbean and French landscape. The opening will be held on Friday May 8th\, 2015 at 108 Church Street\, New Brunswick\, NJ. \nOriginating in Paris in the 18th century\, art salons were the most anticipated annual and biannual events\, celebrating the farthest advances in academia and the arts. These salons provided artists with the opportunity to exhibit their work alongside their contemporaries while received critical as well as public response. Inspired by the Parisian Salons\, Alfa Art Gallery holds Salons four times a year in different artistic mediums and endeavors to showcase the talent of local artists to the New Brunswick public. \nThe gallery is excited to introduce new and well established watercolor and mixed media artists to show in the exhibition. Many of these works range from the beautiful simplicity of realism to the thought-provoking questions of abstraction. While a majority of the artists work in watercolor\, some choose and more extensive approach and add mixed medium to their pieces including: digital imaging\, collage\, charcoal\, and ink. \nThe exhibition has no admission fee and is open to the public. There will be a live musical performance and refreshments will be served. \n  \nExhibiting Artists\nCuratorial Notes by Bari Kaplan \nAida Birritteri is a watercolor artist who draws inspiration from natural settings and human figures.  She creates her works from working off of photographs\, or paints her scenes directly in the open air (en plein air).  Each work expresses a celebration of life through the use of fresh and vibrant colors. \nChris Carter uses her art to express human archetypes\, rhythms\, patterns of life\, and energy that pulses through the universe.  Each work incorporates her other two loves:  math and science. \nDavid Glasofer has had a strong passion for photography his entire life\, and he has practiced the art for the past thirty-five years.  He experiments with the various technological advances that computer imaging offers.  After he prints his images he typically enhances them by incorporating other media such as paint\, pencil\, or chalk. \nHanna Aviv paints a plethora of scenes that inspire her from day to day.  These can range from vast outdoor landscapes to simple objects such as fruits or vegetables.  In each work\, Hana’s main goal is to provide an essence of harmony and tranquility. \nJudy Koo works involve the process of translating impulsive thoughts into drawings and then through painting.  Her subjects entail trivialities that are part of her daily routines; they can be complex or as simple as eating a meal.  Each painting is chaotic\, lyrical\, and playful. \nKaren Starrett uses art as a conduit that connects her inner and outer world.  She sees artistic expression as a means of confidence to express her voice as an individual.  Each of her paintings starts with arbitrary forms that are later transformed and given color. \nLibby Ramage’s works are very abstract and avant-garde.  She incorporates new types of media such as newspaper that add a variety of texture.  Each work is created from a collage of materials that come together and create a cohesive and beautiful image \n Steven Cavallo is a watercolor artist who focuses on images of human figures.  Each painting is infused with emotion that radiates into the souls of viewers. Steven plays with light and shadow\, which highlights the detailing in his paintings. \n Tania Sen draws her inspiration from mythology\, pop culture\, advertisements\, and signage.  Her abstract works incorporate deep meanings as she explores traditional symbolism through personal interpretation for subject matter \n Victoria Kulikowski is a watercolor and botanical artist. Flowers are a constant presence in her works.  She looks for organic shapes and recurring patterns in nature when crafting her paintings \n Mark de Mos is a watercolor artist who uses painting as a means to capture realism through movement\, color\, lights\, and centers of interest. His works communicate his inner emotions or narratives from within. \n Rudy Martin has had a passion for art since early childhood. In 2003 he was diagnosed as legally blind and he continues to paint with this condition. His key purpose of painting is to bring joy to others. Each work combines feelings and motion to create organic and geometric forms\, colors\, and dimensions. \nIndrani Choudhury  is a self-taught artist who takes watercolor to new limits. She manipulates the texture of her paintings in such a manner that her watercolors appear as different media such as acrylics or oils. The landscapes that she paints range from her local New Jersey home to her homeland of Calcutta. \nErica Velasco is a photographic artist with an interest in painting. Her goal with her works is to create aesthetically pleasing visuals through the use of color and texture. The exhibition has no admission fee and is open to the public. \n  \nAbout the Raritan Photo Society \nRPS originally started in 1929 with a small group of photo enthusiasts regularly meeting in each other’s homes. At present\, the society has 50 paid members and many more regular visitors who attend the lectures\, which occur twice a month. RPS has witnessed the amazing evolution of photography from glass plates to today’s powerful digital photo technology. \nThe society’s photographers are united in a mutual love of photography\, but maintain their individual aspirations as to what they want to achieve with that love. There are members who are professional photographers as well as members working towards achieving professional status. Its members choose to work in a wide spectrum of styles from photo-realism to abstraction as well as members who are still looking to find their own style. Inspired by the Parisian Salons\, Alfa Art Gallery holds Salons to showcase the talent of local artists to the New Brunswick public. \n2014 will mark the 5th year of these juried exhibitions. The featured pieces will be in either watercolor or mixed media and from a variety of emerging and professional artists. The thematic diversity of the exhibition is coupled with its stylistic variety. While Dustin Garafolo’s paintings are bound together by their photorealistic undertones\, Rita Herzfeld’s pieces resonate with an abstract quality. Joanne Amantea also embodies this abstraction through the alluring composition of each of her watercolors. Juana Rodriguez’s creates a similarly enticing effect through the raw emotion of her subjects. Emotion is also portrayed in Karen Terry’s ink on paper works\, although this artist does so without the help of color. \nNot only do these artists differ from one another in style\, but there is also variation in form among each artist. Sean Carney and Terez Michael\, for instance\, do not adhere to one particular style of painting\, but\, rather\, excel in many media and forms. Whereas the first part to our spring salon\, “Quiet Moments\,” featured artists who worked primarily in water color\, in “Infinite Layers” the artists in the show combine the traditional painterly materials of water color\, oil\, and acrylic with a variety of outside materials. Another strong characteristic of the work in Infinite Layers is the trend towards abstraction. Artists like Chris Kapsaroff\, Lauren Curtis\, Lea Cattan\, Miriam Lefkowitz\, Yelena Budylin\, and Jane Dell all work with abstraction in varying capacities\, often combining it with figural imagery to create works that juxtapose familiarity and novelty. This bent towards abstraction in “Infinite Layers” also produces an overall effect much different to that of “Quiet Moments\,” where the show is largely comprised of town\, nature\, and landscape scenes. In “Infinite Layers” the collective direction of the show is much different\, as each artist employs a different technique to obscure or estrange their particular subject. For instance\, in Renée Wysocki Levin’s work commonplace objects such as sea shells are magnified and rendered with extreme detail and clarity\, the effect being one that brings a new\, heightened awareness of a relatively commonplace object. Levin’s work is just one example of the exciting work being shown in Infinite Layers\, a show that we hope will demonstrate the talent of each artist. \nAt Alfa Art Gallery’s second spring salon exhibition\, “Infinite Layers\,” there will be\, along with the various works in mixed media and watercolor\, a group of three sculptures provided by the New Brunswick Public Sculpture organization. \nSpirit of 1776 – Edward Kolwicz \nThe NBPS is a not-for-profit organization\, like Alfa Art Gallery\, whose mission is to commission and place public art throughout the city to enhance the quality of life and encourage cultural tourism and commerce. The organization will commission a wide range of styles\, primarily for outdoor display. The sculpture being exhibited in “Infinite Layers” was donated to NBPS in 2008 and is a group of three sculptures by the Metuchen based artist Edward Kolwicz. These life size sculptures are created from automobile parts and scrap metal\, most of which was donated by the Charter Machine Company. In honor of the 1976 bicentennial Kolwicz sculpted three 6-foot high Revolutionary War soldiers\, two of which are outfitted with drums and the third with a flute. Kolwicz has skillfully sculpted these figures in positions that imply movement and that add to their liveliness. The Drummer was perched on top of an aquatic float in 1980 along the Raritan River for the City’s Tercentennial Festival\, reminding spectators of New Brunswick’s role in the Revolution. These sculptures fit in nicely with the rest of the exhibition\, in which many artists make use of irregular and sometimes surprising materials. The collection consists of 6000 slides documenting the changing streetscapes of New Brunswick from 1979 into the early 1990s. \nThe library also maintains a significant local history collection of various media. His paintings find inspiration from unexpected mediums. We clearly see musically themes behind his work in their dynamic compositions and layered imagery. Boundaries are constantly shifting\, much like the perpetual transformation found in the films of Federico Fellini and Andrei Tarkovsky. This complexity brought on by movement creates surreal\, dreamlike environments in his work. Shalum captures the dynamism of creation by using a wet-on-wet watercolor technique.  Originally from Russia\, Shalum received his Masters in Fine Art and Architecture at the Ilya Repin State Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg.  He currently works full time as an architectural designer and renderer in New York City.  \nJane Dell has studied painting\, printmaking\, textile design\, fabric art\, and graphic design. Her diverse background in the arts is well explored in her current body of work. She combines collaging techniques with painting to create provocative and outspoken pieces. The works force us to consider the interactions and interrelations of contemporary culture by embedding carefully selected imagery within surrealistic landscapes of evocative color. Jane has been practicing for nearly forty years and has exhibited in six shows this past year alone\, including a solo show currently on display at the Monmouth Museum.  \nWade Miller’s oil paintings explore the creative destruction of illusion. He offers a fragmented yet cohesive perspective of popular culture by presenting familiar images in ways that challenge the eye. By carefully positioning found images from magazines\, his works channel the modern strategies found in cubist and surrealist traditions. Because his works stop and begin in unexpected ways\, they are naturally absorbed more slowly\, providing a more prolonged interpretive experience for the viewer. Wade received his Masters in Fine Art from Columbia University and has been practicing for nearly thirty years. He currently lives and works in Highland Park\, New Jersey. \nTheodosia Tamborlane is an active member of the Art Students League\, the New Century Artist Gallery\, Studio Montclair and the Woodbridge Artisans’ Guild. Her series “Connections & Communications” uses abstract painting methods to explore the ways that communication among individuals serves to unite and unify their disparate lives and personal experiences. These colorful compositions are highlighted with bold line work that branches throughout the entire surface and reflects the complex entanglements that both bind and limit us. The psychological drawings combine with pure color to create deeply vulnerable and intimate portraits. Heavy layers and transparencies reflect the subject’s fragility and leave the surface textured with complexities. We are at once familiar with and alienated by these personal vignettes. And with the subject’s identity always undisclosed\, the viewer is given the freedom to create their own narrative. Alaine Becker received her BFA from SUNY Purchase in 1981. She recently completed a residency at the Vermont Studio Center and has been exhibited extensively throughout the Northeast Coast. \nAlyce Gottesman received her MFA from the School of Visual Arts in and has been painting for over 30 years. She captures a unique organic essence in her work by focusing on formal issues\, such as space and dimension. Her abstract paintings appear atmospheric. Forms inhabit the space\, and a clever play with perspective gives the illusion of spacial depth. In combination with her heavy use of drawing\, and subtle yet bold color choices\, the viewer becomes absorbed into an imaginary world. The works capture the spirit of nature on an energetic level\, by using abstractions to communicate vital messages. Alyce Gottesman lives and works in Montclair\, NJ. She currently teaches Art at Bergen Community College in Paramus\, New Jersey and is a member of the Young Scholars Program of Newark\, NJ. \nCarole Krinsky is a self taught artist working primarily in pointillism. Her dot and circle filled acrylic paintings exercise bold color choices and intricate arrangements. Finding inspiration from the aboriginal works native to Australia\, her paintings offer universal messages which are powerful and primitive. These confident works convey a broad range of themes\, often spiritual and personal in nature. And\, each theme is provoked by and changes with the artist’s daily life experiences. Carole Krinsky lives and works in East Brunswick\, New Jersey. She is a full time business owner\, mother of three\, and a student of the Highland Park Academy of Art. \nJonathan Horowitz is both a writer and painter. His heavily conceptual but vibrant paintings combine abstractions with familiar cultural references. Their composition is carefully designed so that movement radiates throughout the canvas. Contained in this collection of works is a variety of contrasting elements that complement each other:  representational with abstract pieces\, conversations from past to present\, narratives from experienced to imagined and styles that are dynamic and tranquil. Featuring Ellen Weisbord\, Jamie Greenfield\, Lisa Pressman\, Nilufer Ozturk\, Sarah Petruziello and Theodosia Tamborlane\, this exhibition\, varied in style and medium\, demonstrates an extensive scope of aesthetic sensibility\, where concept is executed into art from different viewpoints\, and brings together an explosive showcase of cooperative diversity. \n  \nAbout the Artists\nEllen Weisbord received her BFA in Art Education from the Philadelphia College of Art. She is a mixed media artist\, working with felt\, photography and coiled basket. Her works\, which reflect influences from nature\, are interpretation of what she observes within and outside her daily life. She has exhibited her work in New Jersey\, Oregon and Washington D.C. At present\, she teaches at Columbia High School in Maplewood\, New Jersey. \nJamie Greenfield obtained her BA in Studio Art from the State University College at Fredonia and her M.A.\, also in Studio Art\, from the State University of New York at Albany. The volume of her works is varied\, ranging from abstract\, colorful pieces to beautifully representational sketches\, reminiscent of Renaissance Art.  At present\, she is serves on the Bunn Family Distinguished Teaching Chair at the Lawrenceville School in Lawrence\, New Jersey. Greenfield has exhibited in many shows in New York\, New Jersey\, Pennsylvania and Alabama. Her works are held in the permanent collections of Rider University\, the Mercer County Cultural and Heritage Commission\, the University of Delaware\, the College of New Jersey and others. \nLisa Pressman received her BA from Douglass College at Rutgers University and her MFA in Painting from Bard College. Her paintings are beautifully abstract\, incorporating oils\, collage\, wax and other media to create works that allude to personalized time and space. According to Pressman\, her work is the physical embodiment of the slow and gradual process of realization and transformation. She has showcased her work in several solo and group exhibitions in Pennsylvania\, New Jersey\, New York\, Florida\, Texas\, Massachusetts\, Georgia\, Florida\, Oregon and South Carolina. Her work appears in several corporate collections\, including those of McKinsey Financial Corporation\, Hyatt Regency\, Evergreen Spot Trading Corporation and many others. \nNilufer Ozturk earned her BA in Art Education from the Ondokuzmayis University in Samsun\, Turkey. Prior to moving to the United States in 2000\, she has taught in various cities\, including Istanbul. The focus of her work is in establishing communications between past and present in regards to what she observes from her surroundings\, often using organic forms. She has exhibited in several shows in Turkey as well as in New Jersey. She was awarded second place in an exhibition at the Hunterdon Museum of Art in Clifton\, New Jersey. \nSarah Petruziello obtained her BFA and MFA from the University of Georgia in Athens\, Georgia. She creates large-scale drawings—using graphite drawing pencils on Arches watercolor paper—that are generally narrative portraiture with elements of symbolism. Petruziello has successfully exhibited in many solo and group exhibitions in New Jersey\, New York and Georgia. She has been awarded a grant by the George Sugarman Foundation and a fellowship from the New Jersey Council State of the Arts. \n  \nTheodosia Tamborlane received her A. Tyler’s geometric paintings on wood are spatial illusions that “press and pull” abstract space\, using color\, lines and shapes to convey emotional states.  Similarly\, McManus’ works are geometric and painted on wood. Highly detailed and saturated in color\, his odd-shaped\, puzzle-like works of art contain unusual combinations of solid forms\, causing intrigue and need for reflection. Chen’s paintings\, on the other hand\, are more representational than the rest\, but\, nevertheless\, explore a surreal feel to the moment depicted by a thick and painterly use of his materials. Some of his works explore “the triple properties of a painting’s dimension: the space behind the pictorial plane\, the physical existence of the painting surface per se\, and the space in front of the pictorial surface\, where the viewers are embodied.”  Bransfield uses lines and color to create a layering effect that makes the paintings feel dense and loose at the same time. Upon closer observation\, the viewer may feel that they are witnessing the works from an aerial perspective\, creating depth into the canvas itself. Ralston creates single-colored\, ambiguous\, rounded figures in an equally ambiguous and loose space: his lighting suggests the space is not flat and his blurred backgrounds hint at depth. “Within the Spaces” is an exhibition that ties together five remarkable artists in which they will cause their audience to ponder from work to work what lies beneath\, above\, and beyond what is being observed. \n  \nAbout the Artists\nColeen Tyler received B.S. in Art Education from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania and her MFA in Ceramics from the Virginia Commonwealth University. Throughout her career\, Tyler taught as an art teacher in many institutions\, including Bridgewater-Raritan Middle School\, Rutgers Preparatory School and Washington Community School. Tyler has been published in several newspapers\, including the New York Times\, and has exhibited in many shows in Pennsylvania\, New Jersey and Virginia. \nDarren McMannus obtained his BFA in Drawing and Illustration from the Glasgow School of Art in Scotland\, BFA in Experimental Studio and Illustration from the Hartford Art School and his MFA in Painting from the Cranbrook Academy of Art. He has exhibited in many solo and group exhibitions throughout the United States and won many awards\, including a fellowship from the New Jersey Council State of the Arts\, from the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts and from the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation. \nJian Chen is an emerging artist from Rutgers University’s Mason Gross School of the Arts with an expected graduation date of 2012. He has actively participated in the art community within the university via exhibiting works in several Mason Gross Galleries shows.  Chen also has an M.D. from China\, where he originally is from. \nMichael Bransfield graduated with a B.A. in Humanities from Providence College. He later studied painting from the Massachusetts College of Art as well as at the New York Studio School of Drawing\, Painting and Sculpture. He was also awarded a fellowship to the Yale-Norfolk Summer School of Art.  Bransfield has exhibited in many exhibitions in New York and New Jersey.  He has also served as director of the Metuchen Gallery. \nSam Ralston started painting in his early 20’s. He attended classes at the DuCret Art School and later enrolled at Kean College with an intention of becoming an art teacher but changed his major to graphic design. Throughout his career\, he displayed his work in different venues and won a number of awards. He currently works as a graphic designer and paints in his spare time. The colors of the paintings in this collection are optimistic and vibrant; however\, each piece contains an underlying narrative of the struggle to attain knowledge or to illustrate a desire in the bigger scheme of Life. Dara Alter creates multi-perspective\, aerial landscapes without a fixed viewpoint as a response to her yearning for an ideal Israel. Peter Arakawa paints his works in only clusters of twos or threes in an attempt to avoid repetition: his works\, created from observations of daily life\, serve as voyages\, combining patterns and shapes that are unlikely together\, in search for an order that fits. In his paintings\, Carlos Frias\, with his intriguing Kandinsky-like palette\, attempts to analyze and capture the essence of human beings as organic and spiritual forms with their ability to grow and self-destruct. Rita Herzfeld\, acting and reacting in a cycle to each step in her creative process\, attacks her canvases with ardent\, moving paint strokes to actively demonstrate the gap and interactions between instinct\, ideas\, self-exploration and\, ultimately\, truth in a stilled image. \n  \nAbout the Artists\nCarlos Frias received his BFA in Painting from the Parsons School of Design. His recent works aims to highlight our humanity \, creativity\, relationships and  urges to grow and self-destruct while\, at the same time\, strip us of our spirituality and culture\, representing humans as organic forms bound to decompose and regenerate. Additionally\, his work visually demonstrates the parallel between what art is able to represent of the evolution of humankind and how much we want to preserve and manipulate art to represent the history of our species. His works are held in many institutions and museums\, including the Zimmerli Art Museum\, Newark Public Library\, Jersey City Museum\, the State Museum\, Hunterdon Art Museum and Johnson & Johnson Corporation. \n  \nRita Herzfeld attended the School of Visual Arts and City College of N.Y. and obtained her BA from Rutgers University.  Inspired by her artistic mother\, Herzfeld became an artist who grew up believing in the power that comes with creation and its processes from simple tools such as pencil and paper. As the second of 2010\, this New Brunswick Art Salon exhibition “Aftershock: Lines and Vibrations” closes Alfa’s successful year of promoting the arts. \nThe title of this exhibition “Aftershock: Lines and Vibrations” implies consequence in viewing the works of our three stylistically different artists. Though the works of Alexandra Pacula\, Jen Mazza\, and Marsha Goldberg emerge from different intentions. Their intense marks share a common ground in resonating lingering messages or sentiments into the viewers. Pacula’s work\, containing blurred scenery simplified into humming lines\, drugs the audience into becoming part of a night scene that references to excitement\, opportunities\, seduction\, and anxiety. Mazza’s work\, containing colorful explosions in an otherwise muted image\, trembles with an aftertaste of alarm. Goldberg\, with her untamed lines\, brings a slow realization of an intangible and ineffable feeling. The debut of these three artists at the Alfa Art Gallery will be nothing less than an earthquake! \n  \nAbout the Artists\nAlexandra Pacula earned her BFA from Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University and her MFA from Montclair State University. Originally from Poland\, she migrated to the United States at the age of fourteen and currently works in a studio in Brooklyn. She has successfully exhibited in the United States\, as well as Spain and London. Pacula is also an award recipient of the Robert Sterling Clark Visual Space Award and a Fellow in Painting from the New York Foundation for the Arts. \nThe works of Alexandra Pacula can be best described as an intoxication of gracefully vibrating lines of urban nightlife. Unsettling yet captivating\, her works force viewers to experience the projection of human interactions\, seductions\, and desires on the canvas. Powered by the illusion of speed and the feeling of inebriation\, Pacula molds the state of mind of audiences as they witness the dissolved shapes and blurred streaks. \nJen Mazza received her BA from Mary Washington College and her MFA from the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University. She has exhibited throughout New York and New Jersey. Her most recent paintings were displayed in the one person exhibition “Self Deceit” at the Jersey City Museum and in a solo project at the Aljira Center for Contemporary Art. Mazza has received two Individual Artist Fellowships from the New Jersey State Council of the Arts and praise from the NY Times and the Star Ledger. \nDeeply moved by the destruction wrought by bombings\, the creations of Jen Mazza were made in response to the conflict between Israel and Lebanon. Choosing to use images of idyllic American landscape\, Mazza used the color of water-based mediums on black and white to exemplify the shock is closer to home than one would think. Small in sizes\, the pieces become intimate\, up close\, and personal. \nMarsha Goldberg obtained her BFA from Boston University’s School of Fine Arts and her MFA from Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University. She has exhibited in several galleries and institutions\, including the DeCordova Museum\, the Boston Public Library\, and the Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University. Goldberg was also a founding member of the Brickbottom Artists Building in Somerville\, MA\, one of the country’s largest artists-owned studio buildings. \nThe artworks of Marsha Goldberg strike their audience with intrigue upon first impression. With careful attention to the marks\, the viewer receives a range of sensations equal to the slightly frenzied but eloquent nature of the lines. According to Goldberg\, in their resemblance to text\, these marks are comparable to what a traveler in a foreign country may see in the language\, only understanding it as a decorative line or picture. Beautifully simple yet poignant\, her calligraphic lines are created with an attitude of free association\, often in response to music.
