This exhibition\, showing over three months\, showcases a myriad of approaches to photography.  In this exhibition powerful visual storytelling\, stunning impressions\, as well as unique techniques are all displayed. “Refracted: Shade and Light”\, features unique artists like Jean-Paul Picard’s hand bent aluminum prints that bring a third dimension to photography\, Juan Giraldo’s poignant storytelling\, and Anita Sagastegui’s remarkable perspective of flora and fauna. Every artist in this exhibition brings their own techniques ranging from traditional film to sophisticated digital editing tools.\n \n“Refracted: Shade and Light” is the newest exhibition in the over decade long tradition of Alfa’s New Brunswick Art Salon (NBAS) program. DESCRIPTION:Exhibition Duration: September 1\, 2020 – October 23\, 2020  \nOpening Reception: Thursday\, September 16 @ 4:00 pm \nOpening Reception: Saturday\, September 18 @ 4:00 pm \nAlfa Art Gallery invites you to “LATITUDES/LONGITUDES/MERIDIANS\,” a three-person show with Betty Jacobsen\, Yvonne Skaggs and Meredeth Turshen\, featuring representative works from their numerous explorations in oil\, watercolor\, drawing\, collage\, ceramics and mixed media. \nThe three artists have shown their work in a variety of exhibition venues around New York\, New Jersey\, and Pennsylvania since the 1980s. Through the years that Betty\, Yvonne and Meredeth have known\, worked and exhibited together\, they have influenced each other in many subtle ways\, especially with their commitment and dedication to express their feelings and visions artistically.  \n  \nBetty Jacobsen\, an artist and educator\, trained at Syracuse\, NYU and Montclair State University. She taught advanced art classes at Hunterdon Central Regional High School. Her passions are art and nature\, coupled with education. Nature serves as a personal metaphor for the cycles of life. Quietly intimate in size\, her work starts from observations of the outside world and flows from the unconscious. Her small works can stand individually yet create a larger visual statement when viewed together.    \nBetty manipulates clay slabs and assembles them into land/sea forms in this new series of artworks. In her hands\, bowls\, which are a traditional ceramic form\, become interior landscapes\, relating to a personal spiritual journey of the past few years. Linoleum relief blocks are carved\, pressed into clay\, cut out\, and added to the clay forms\, creating movement and rhythm. In ceramics\, the combination of earth and fire equals transformation.     \n  \nJ. Yvonne Skaggs\, an artist who exhibits two- and three-dimensional work in various venues in New York and New Jersey\, studied at the University of Iowa School of Art and Art History. Her varied career includes producing maps and technical drawings and designing and preparing exhibits for small history and art organizations. With traditional artifacts being destroyed around the world by man and nature\, she has been considering what we mean when we preserve objects\, paintings\, and artifacts of all kinds. With the abstracted landscape images shown here\, she thinks about the definition of style and culture and the objects we choose to save to record our time. She uses the technique of collage\, reassembling elements to sculpt\, build and construct images. The papers and fabrics come from many sources – magazines\, newspapers\, photographs and paper and fabric.  \nYvonne creates needlework images from plein-air drawings and paintings\, framing them in painted mats. The work incorporates painting drop cloths\, which provide energetic images of tempest and fury\, and contrast with the stitched serenity of a simple tree\, flower or path in the woods. Aware that the earth is being changed\, reshaped and destroyed\, Yvonne’s artwork illustrates the conflict between the stark beauty of this life and the death struggles of a planet fighting to survive.  \n  \nMeredeth Turshen is an artist\, teacher and writer who lives in Hoboken and taught at Rutgers University in New Brunswick\, NJ\, for more than 25 years. Her art studies began at age ten at the Art Students League in New York and continued\, after majoring in studio art at Oberlin College\, in workshops and residencies at Pratt\, the Printmaking Council of NJ\, the Rutgers Center for Innovative Printmaking\, Vermont Studio Center\, and Moulin à Nef (VCCA France). She exhibits regularly in the New York metropolitan region and with Viridian Gallery in Chelsea. For this exhibition\, she was inspired by the challenge of rendering remembered landscapes in oil and collage. The work is simultaneously representational and non-figurative.    \nMeredeth revisits storied landscapes viewed on her research trips through Africa\, Asia and Europe\, remembering and reimagining the environments that stamped her life. Working in oil paint and paper collage\, she searches for telling details that reveal place\, establish ambience\, and recall the experiences of being an amazed and observant visitor.

Living and working abroad gave her the opportunity to snap photos of ordinary people wherever she went\, accumulating two decades worth of stunning material. Inspired by Henri Carter Bresson and her photography mentor\, Leandre Jackson\, Rahim views photography as fine art\, which she combines with her creative writing. She has a BA from University of Chicago\, JD from Temple Beasley School of Law\, and MFA from Rutgers-Newark University. Along with being a Voices of Our Nation alumni\, Rahim was a PANK Book Contest Finalist for her hybrid memoir and has exhibited her photography throughout the tri-state area. She is a 2020 Artist in Residence at SMUSH Gallery.   \n  \n  \nArik Gorban was eleven years old when he first started processing black-and-white film. Since then\, his abilities have only been honed by his 40+ year career as a fine art photographer\, both in his refined technical skills and through the development of his creative process. He has spent decades experimenting and closing the gap between what is possible with a camera and digital editing\, and what he envisions in his mind’s eye. He puts special focus on the creative\, but does so without neglecting the technical aspects of the photography discipline. The same care goes into his editing process\, which he utilizes to finalize his vision and provide a completed piece.  \n  \n  \n  \nBrad Terhune crafts weird worlds through his collages\, something he has done since childhood. A northern New Jersey-based artist\, he embraces the influences of 20th century Surrealist influence in creating portals into his strange realms\, often imbued with the powerful subjects of politics and social justices. His collages incorporate a plethora of materials\, like historic photographs\, and other disciplines\, like printmaking. His paintings\, meanwhile\, represent a dialogue between creator and canvas\, with Terhune asking himself how and why the image develops as it does; this is the soul of these pieces\, which are ‘about’ exactly what the viewer sees. He majored in Illustration at the School of Visual Arts in the 80’s and obtained a BA in Art Education from Montclair State University. Along with creating new works\, he serves as an art educator for Clark Public Schools and an Instructor at Zimmerli Art Museum’s Summery Art Camp. He frequently exhibits in the New York-New Jersey area and is featured in collections in Japan\, England\, France and elsewhere in the United States.  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nChee Bravo reflects rich and diverse environments inhabited by vibrant and soulful individuals through her portraits. Her background as a printmaker and career as graphic designer informs her creative process\, first putting together digital collages with photography and computer manipulation\, and then transferring the piece onto canvas with acrylics and silk-screening. While her life began in Trinidad and Tobago in the West Indies\, her journey began in the New York subways\, capturing performers in their element. Her interests have only grown\, with a trip to Havana\, Cuba inspiring a series on reflecting people’s cultural\, religious\, and political beliefs. Her current focus lies with the local performers of her hometown\, Trenton\, New Jersey. She holds a BFA in printmaking from Florida International University and numerous awards\, including the Betty Laird Award and Addy Award. Her works can be found publicly in the permanent collections of Trenton City Museum\, Florida International University\, the Brooklyn Art Library\, the Printmaking Center of New Jersey\, as well as featured in exhibitions throughout the tri-state area and abroad.   \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nDanielle Austen is a photographer and an environmentalist trained in the fine arts\, having received her BFA from Cornell University. Additionally\, she attended the master’s program at the Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications with an emphasis in studying photojournalism\, but not before spending 7 years as a graphic designer among a number of other artistic endeavors. Today\, she presents her collection of photographs featuring warm organic imagery that could only be designed by the majesty of the natural world and captured by the steady hand of a seasoned photographer. Devoted to the land and her craft\, Austen focuses on bodies of water. Easily overlooked brooks and streams are transformed into spiritual waterfronts while intertwining their fluidity and ever-fluctuating form to match the possibility of viewer interpretation. Her work is overflowing with reflective and meditative potential.   \n  \n  \nFrederick Ballet has always been enamored with the natural world\, a source of existential fascination and peaceful solitude. While the Brooklyn native initially pursued a medical career as a hand surgeon\, retirement allowed him to renew his passion in photography. In 2018\, he became the first student to earn the Contemporary Practices Photography Certificate from Philadelphia Photo Arts Center and has since had his work displayed at shows\, galleries and businesses\, a long way from snapping pictures of zoo animals with an Olympus camera. Ballet captures images of the beach at various times in the day and year\, balancing realism and abstraction by anchoring viewers to the shore and then inviting them to contemplate the colors and calmness of the ocean. He hopes viewers walk away with the same sentiments that resound in him after gazing upon the natural majesty\, “a meditative sense of beauty\, peace\, and timelessness.”  \n  \n  \nGeorge Mattei captures the beauty of the Jersey Shore through the High Dynamic Range technique\, a process that imitates how the human eye gazes upon a scene. Rather than taking a single exposure\, Mattei sets up a tripod and obtains three to nine exposures at varying light levels and tones\, then combines them into one image. In preserving details that would have otherwise been overlooked\, Mattei elevates everything beautiful about the landscapes and seascapes he photographs\, resulting in an immersive viewing experience. A graduate of the School of Visual Arts\, Mattei creates photography for art and commercial purposes and is currently working at Helen Hayes Rehabilitation Hospital\, using his photography as a mode for wellness and inspiration. His photos are featured for businesses’ promotional materials and at galleries and exhibitions throughout New Jersey.   \n  \n  \nGwyneth Green is an artist who uses the camera and the written word. A published poet with a BA in Fairleigh Dickenson University\, Green participated in ekphrastic collaborations with visual artists. Approaching the synergic nature of the word and the image fascinated her\, her piqued interest encouraging her to wed her poems with her photographs. Her careful use of color and focus mimics imaginative prose as it guides viewers through the scene. She has fifteen poetic publications and has been featured in exhibitions in the mid-Atlantic region as well as virtual ones.  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nHarold Olejarz invites viewers to peer through a kaleidoscope in his circular-constructed pieces. His career began in 3D as a sculptor\, earning a BA from Brooklyn College and MFA from Pratt Institute and participating actively in the Soho cooperative gallery movement. By the 80’s\, he’d adapted his sculptures to be wearable and incorporate performance into his art\, and in the 90’s explored digital imaging to capture the ‘performances’ of objects on a digital scanner. His present work looks beyond the typical rectangular confines of the frame and instead creates circular\, collaged images consisting of repeating\, rotating slices reminiscent of a pinwheel or mandala. This invites viewers to focus on relationships of the images and reveal intricate and delightful patterns. He has participated in solo and group exhibitions and performances throughout the United States\, as well as participated in reviews nationally and internationally.  \n  \n  \n  \nKay Kenny shows silent statues witness societal descent and environmental vulnerability. Currently a photography teacher at New York University and the International Center of Photography in New York City\, Kenny is deeply rooted in the fine art world. Her education includes a BFA from Syracuse University\, MA from Rutgers University\, and MFA from Syracuse University\, while her resume includes work in photography\, painting\, and published critique. Her Stone Goddess series takes Greek and Roman sculptures from the Metropolitan Museum and places them elsewhere in the United States\, acting as avatars of the past watching what humanity’s whims have wrought. Her work has been exhibited in in the Eastern United States and Taiwan\, and\, in 2004\, she co-curated the exhibit “Manifestations: Photographs of Men” at the Southeast Museum of Photography in 2004.   \n  \n  \nLinda Troeller is a renowned and award-winning photographer who has dedicated the majority of her artistic career to personal\, women’s and social issues. Her latest work\, “Personal Opera\,” tackles subjects she has been exploring for most of her career\, such as gender\, humanity\, emotion and aura. She has refined her ability to capture the human body\, arranging the human body to best promote these questions of truth and self. Her portraits dare to delve beneath the surface and face the questions of personhood. There is no subject she will shy away from\, and the confidence is palpable. She is the star of her “Personal Opera.”  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nLothar Troeller’s “Children of the fire” is a series reflecting Troeller’s personal journey through crisis and destiny that is physically formed by not only the elements of the earth but by the conscious mind that guides them. The German American artist and photographer whose exhibition work spans over multiple decades and continents\, now invites us to observe his Children of the Fire with introspective intent. His visually diverse yet equally striking works are simultaneously vibrant and painful. The raw and heartbreaking series is charged with a sense of perseverance in the face of adversity. The scorched surface gives way to new beginnings\, as hardships often do.    \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nMark Chernin uses his photography to evoke an emotional response in his viewers. His love of photography began while he was in college in the 1960’s\, a period of social upheaval in the United States that used photography to demonstrate the political activism and national debate the country was experiencing. As he continued to study art\, he discovered the paintings of the Hudson River School and was moved by the artists abilities to capture the luminous qualities of light\, tonality and saturation. Over the last six decades\, Chernin has been able to study with prominent photographers\, and display his work in national juried fine art photography exhibitions along with several of his own solo exhibitions. Most recently\, Mark won a First Place in his category at the First Annual National Arts Competition at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (2011).  \n  \n  \n  \nMelchi Dompreh’s photographs\, like his poetry\, hope to express his heart’s sentiments and stir up emotions and feelings viewers can empathize with. Dompreh is native to Flushing\, Queens\, New York\, but moved to Edison\, New Jersey in 2004. He graduated from Middlesex Country Vocational and Technical Schools with a focus on Architecture Technology in 2013. He began to take photography seriously in March of 2016\, as a way to visually express what he had written in his poems. By the end of Summer 2017\, Dompreh started to work with film\, and in 2019 his work began to be shared on Instagram. Dompreh is currently working on a transforming his poetic journal\, ’Loud Whispers ‘to film. This work will explore the turbulent years that marked his teenage years and early adulthood\, that many face. He recently was one of five artists awarded the Moment x Willem Verbeeck Grant\, and is developing his own website.  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nMichael Yacovino passed away nearly two decades ago\, but his work is still as powerful as ever. It is able to embody the capabilities of art\, in whichever medium it may present itself\, to evolve and metamorphose in perpetuity. Yavocino received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Mason Gross School of Art in 1986\, and had several dalliances with fashion design.  Yacovino’s work juxtaposes the familiar with the ambiguous\, and presents a commentary on objectification.   \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nTricia Miho is an Argentinian\, self-taught artist who was destined to be an artist from birth. Her family is filled with talented artist and craftsman\, and her grandfather was even an esteemed Italian jewelry designer. She received a formal education in music with a Baccalaureate degree along with a Masters in Law and Social Sciences\, along with received British Royal Academies awards in painting\, watercolor and drawing. Her work was characterized by an inimitable artistic style influenced by the surrealist visions of Giorgio De Chirico\, and the detail-rich cityscapes depicted by Pieter Bruegel. Miho currently resides in the United States\, is regularly featured in exhibitions\, and has been experimenting with photography as a means of manipulating and creating new ideas.  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nAlfa Art Gallery is a non-profit organization devoted to the discovery\, growth\, and support of emerging and established artists within the art community. DESCRIPTION:This Winter\, Alfa Art Gallery is hosting the New Brunswick Art Salon’s All-Media Exhibition. For ten years the New Brunswick Art Salon at the Alfa Art Gallery has been a vital part of the local art scene and culture. This seasons exhibition includes several locally renowned artists including Carol Radsprecher and Allison Lewis\, along with international artists Jung Gun Park and Ogunlesi Paul\, among others. Several different mediums will be on display\, such as painting\, photography\, drawing\, and sculpture.   \nAs per our new normal as a nation\, the Alfa Art Gallery is also proud to include a virtual version of our exhibition. This fully interactive online experience will allow visitors to view and be involved with the works just as they would in person at the gallery. International artists will be displayed exclusively in the virtual version of the exhibition\, so be sure not to miss it! Hosted by artsteps.com\, the virtual exhibition will be available from December 4th through January 30th\, 2021.    \nExhibition Duration: December 1st\, 2020 – January 30th 2021  \nGallery Opening Reception: Unfortunately\, due to the recent increase in COVID-19 cases and Governor Phil Murphy’s subsequent increase in limitations of indoor gatherings with Executive Order No. 196\, Alfa Art Gallery has decided to postpone our in-person gallery opening for the NBAS All-Media Exhibition: “Configured Personas.” We will be supplementing this event with artist interviews and potential virtual open studios with our featured artists. We apologize for this sudden change and we hope you are all staying safe in these times. \nVirtual Opening Reception: Thursday\, December 3rd\, 2020 @ 6:00 PM \nFeatured Artists:\n \nJamie Greenfield works in this exhibition reflect an ecosystem that encompasses nature\, cosmology\, and the connection between the inner mind and the outer natural world. The objects in her works seem to have a tenuous relation to one another\, yet they are anchored in a structured space. Some of these relations are provided to the viewer while others are more ambiguous\, and may be the result of memory or longing. Greenfield draws upon personal history in combination with observation of light and form\, and often does not have a preconceived plan for a work\, allowing the piece to evolve and process as it is created. She views the moth as a potent metaphor: beautiful and dangerous\, the brevity of its life coupled with its incessant movement towards the light appears to reflect the human existential dilemma.  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nOgunlesi Paul is a graduate of the prestigious Yaba College of Technology in Lagos\, Nigeria\, where he obtained a National Diploma in General Art (majoring in Painting). He worked as an IT student at Defactori Art Studio under Akintunde O. John. He has participated in numerous art workshops\, symposiums\, and exhibitions–such as the OYASAF marble print workshop\, The Artmiabo Art workshop\, The Medallion Art workshop in honor of Kolade Oshinowo’s birthday\, Art in Medicine Fellowship and Workshop 2018\, and Artbridge Project Symposium–both within the country and internationally. Paul has been a member of The Beyond Borders Artists Association of Nigeria since 2017 and began working as an art instructor at THE METAPHOR in Lagos\, Nigeria in 2020. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nPatricia Hynes’s works are made of narratives of ordinary people in natural settings that challenge viewers to reflect upon their own lives. She believes that every reaction is unique and anyone can be a subject of her paintings. She focuses on the moments that are difficult for the eye and memory to capture\, which are pivotal to revealing the dynamic of a painting. To achieve this\, she takes numerous  “action” photographs of subjects\, then transforms these images into a montage that becomes a visual concept. The painting’s visual origins are transformed through composition and pigment\, leading her studies on how people react to life situations. She paints in oils using a variety of small brushes to create expressive visuality and a reading tempo that actively engage viewers in thought and interpretation of her works.  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nPaul Fuentes has been directing national commercials and campaigns at his own production company with Screen Gems. His knowledge and understanding of advertising\, pop culture\, theater\, film\, and classic and modern masters have informed his paintings throughout time. After graduating from Temple University\, Fuentes moved to New York where his paintings and illustrations appeared in national ads and publications including The New York Times. He worked in broadcast advertising and promotion at NBC and later HBO\, where he became a creative director and then began to direct. He soon opened his own production company with Screen Gems where he directed hundreds of national commercials and campaigns. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nStephanie Deshpande is a representational painter living in northern New Jersey\, and is best known for her psychological portraits and narrative paintings. Her works combine a love of realism with personal allegories and create unearth hidden emotions that capture the quiet drama of the world around her. She has showcased her paintings in several noticeable exhibitions such as Painting Today for International Women’s Day 2019 in Barcelona\, Spain\, and American Women Artists for the Tuscon Art Museum in Tuscon Arizona. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nAllison Lewis demonstrates high levels of expressionism in her art influenced by her incredible life experiences. Being a philanthropic individual\, Lewis has crafted art in New Brunswick for those who are homeless\, as well as for those who are mentally ill. She does this out of the kindness of her heart and for the love of art. Her art is demonstrated in many different forms\, by being displayed not only to loved ones\, but to therapy groups and in art classes. The expressions in her drawings have a massive variety: they can express any topic\, whether it be cancer\, love\, or anger. Her inclusiveness of individuals is incredible….. Allison is additionally passionate about showcasing her art to handicapped individuals. Her kindheartedness puts a much heavier meaning into her paintings. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nCarol Radsprecher was born in Brooklyn and remained in New York City for her BFA and MFA in painting at Hunter College. Now\, she has started to explore the stimulating world of photoshop and digital art. Through this medium\, Radsprecher paints different layers with speed and in doing so is able to manipulate and render infinite variations of her abstracted figures. Each image contributes to a series that is both narrative and autobiographical in exploring the first landscape we see in the world– the female body. With her work published and in solo and group exhibitions\, Radsprecher has shown her distorted representations at galleries in the tri-state area beyond including at the Victory Hall Drawing Rooms\, Rogue Community College Gallery\, Grants Pass\, The Alliance Gallery\, Metropolitan Community College’s Next Gallery\, Pierro Gallery\, Garrison Art Center\, and Thompson Park Art Exhibition Series.  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \nSeema Singh Dua has been a sculptor for the past fifteen years in India. Since then\, she has been featured innumerable galleries across the globe and had the distinct honor of being commissioned by the Home Ministry for their museum in Nirman Bhawan\, Delhi\, India. Her artist career began with studying textile designing with a specialization in printing technologies and working as a free-lance textile designer. After many years of developing her sculptural techniques\, Dua has started to emphasize the interior aspect of her pieces by connecting her audience with the inner soul of the sculpture. She considers the aesthetic exterior of art is just a small part of a larger experience. Using the concepts of interior and exterior\, Dua encourages her audience to contemplate the dichotomies of the physical and the cerebral\, reality and imagination\, and the exposed and the hidden.  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nYongshin Cho is a truly global artist who has worked both in Seoul\, South Korea and Paris\, France for the past forty years. Cho began his career at Hongik University with a BFA in painting which was followed by another BFA and MFA at the Université Paris. In 1995\, he was invited to be a part of the International Video and Multimedia Art Festival where he garnered critical acclaim. After that\, Cho continued to become involved in notable projects\, artists residencies\, and teaching with his particular style. He was also featured in many exhibitions in France (such as the Grand Palais\, and Salon of France International Fine-art Society\, Biennale d’art Contemporain)\, Korea (not limited to the Whanki Museum\, Gwangju Biennal\, and PICAF International Contemporary Art Exhibition) and United States (including the Cleveland Internation Drawing Contest & Exhibit\, Queens College\, and Riverside Gallery). His works have been heavily informed by the experience of living through the brutality of the Gwangju Uprising. With that context\, Cho chooses to use his medium to take a critical look at social\, political\, and cultural structures that incur injustice and inequality.   \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \nJung Gun Park a current professor in digital art and ceramics at Dongduk Women’s University\, has been featured in exhibitions in Taiwan\, China\, Japan\, and Korea. After earning a Ph.D. at Hong-Ik University in Seoul in ceramics\, Park has been featured in both group and solo exhibitions throughout Asia and receiving many awards at the Gyeonggi International Ceramic Biennale Competition\, the Hagi Grand Prix in Contemporary Ceramic in Japan\, and Tawain Ceramic Biennale among many others. His art style is focused on the idea of creating something as his father was an architect. Since a young age\, he considered buildings as things that were made versus something that was acquired transactionally. Park uses transportation as the main subject in many of his pieces as a way to critique contemporary rapid industrialization. He challenges his audience to introspect on how humans mediate between the inherent dangers and convenience with modern technology.  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \nMarina Burana was born in Argentina but received her BFA at Taipei National University of Arts in Taiwan where she currently works and resides. Because of her dual residencies\, Burana displayed her works in both Taiwan and Argentina group exhibitions. Since then\, she has also extended her portfolio to Mérida\, México\, and Los Angeles\, USA. Additionally\, Burana has designed the covers of several publications including a variety of magazines\, journals\, and even a poetry book. She enjoys manipulating the texture of oils across surfaces\, toying with the thickness. Burana recently started experimenting with different sources (such as tree bark) to make more natural\, earthy pigments. Along with nature\, she incorporates her own relationship with poetry and memory in her pieces. She utilizes these elements to weave a narrative that is deeply personal but also rooted in the natural world with strong\, full colors.  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \nNick Savides started painting when he was three years old when his mother began teaching how to paint. He continued with his formal education at Brandeis University where he received his BFA with highest honors. He has been featured in many exhibits in New York City\, as well as in Massachusetts\, upstate New York\, Connecticut\, New Jersey\, and Toronto\, Canada. He was also published by Nabi Press and in 2016’s Art Voices Art Books’ in 101 Contemporary Artists as well as John Natsoulas Press. Savides started as a realist oil painter where he began to focus on representing light and its many shades. Many of his paintings use light as a way to explore the concept of space. He uses this relationship in diverse landscapes (ranging from urban to rural)\, depictions of architecture in diverse settings\, and figures in portraits.   \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \nDeirdre Sheean  Was born and raised in New Jersey surrounded by a family of artists\, studied graphic design and illustration at Parsons in the 1970s and has continually renovated and updated her own style. By using stencils\, Sheean reveals intrinsic repetition both in the natural and the man-made with recursive symbols. During this process\, Sheean leaned into her graphic design background by using design systems to organize these motifs. Additionally\, she focuses on contrast to inform the composition of her pieces\, using the variety to allow the subjects to take on a life of their own. DESCRIPTION:Exhibition Duration: March 3\, 2020 – April 25\, 2020 \nOpening Reception: Thursday\, March 12 @ 5:00 pm  \nAlfa Art Gallery invites you to “LIFE DISTILLED”\, a three-person show with Meredeth Turshen\, Betty Jacobsen\, and Yvonne Skaggs\, featuring representative works from their numerous explorations in watercolor\, drawing\, collage\, and mixed media.     \nThe three artists have shown their work in a variety of exhibition venues around New York\, New Jersey\, and Pennsylvania since the 1980s. Through the years that Betty\, Meredeth and Yvonne have known\, worked and exhibited together\, they have influenced each other in many subtle ways\, especially with their commitment and dedication to express their feelings and visions artistically.  \nMeredeth Turshen is an artist\, teacher and writer who lives in Hoboken and taught at Rutgers University in New Brunswick\, NJ\, for more than 25 years. Her art studies began at age ten at the Art Students League in New York and continued\, after majoring in studio art at Oberlin College\, in workshops and residencies at Pratt\, the Printmaking Council of NJ\, the Rutgers Center for Innovative Printmaking\, Vermont Studio Center\, and Moulin à Nef (VCCA France). She exhibits regularly in the New York metropolitan region and with Viridian Gallery in Chelsea. For this exhibition\, she was inspired by the challenge of incorporating images of household décor\, floral arrangements and potted plants into collages that are simultaneously representational and non-figurative.   The collages reveal familiar objects through the lens of a modern artist\, giving quotidian scenes a new twist.  \nMeredeth’s art turns combines scenes from nature\, landscapes and interior features to create abstract compositions. Her collages present recognizable objects and the perspective of a modern artist. In this exhibition she shares with viewers the challenge of creating a non-figurative image with familiar items such as flowers and household décor.  The result is an overlapping of textures\, pops of color and geometry that pull your gaze across the entire image to investigate further ad recognize the features in each panel.  \nBetty Jacobsen\, an artist and educator\, trained at NYU and Montclair State University. She teaches advanced art classes at Hunterdon Central Regional High School. Her passions are art and nature\, coupled with education\, with nature serving as a personal metaphor for the cycles of life. Starting from observations of nature\, her work flows from the unconscious; it is quietly intimate in size. Her small works can stand individually yet create a larger visual statement when viewed together.  The repetition and relationship among parts is exciting\, as each series explores an idea through consistency of size and media.  Humble materials such as paper\, watercolor\, sewing thread\, feathers and pen have worked their way into three-dimensional pieces through folding. For the work shown here\, called The Walk\, Jacobsen used tiny bird feathers to create 100 paper triptychs.   \nBetty is inspired by nature. For her\, nature serves as a personal metaphor for lifecycles.  With this in mind\, and a longing to bring viewers into a private world with the work\, she creates small artworks with soft strokes of watercolors\, thread\, feathers and pen. The result is a piece that can almost be felt by viewers. And\, in a way\, can be. Betty’s works can be held by viewers\, an interaction she hopes is like reading a book.  \n Yvonne Skaggs\, an artist who exhibits two- and three-dimensional work in various venues in New York and New Jersey\,studied at the University of Iowa School of Art and Art History and the Art Students League in New York. Her varied career includes producing maps and technical drawings and designing and preparing exhibits for small history and art organizations. With traditional artifacts being destroyed around the world by man and nature\, she has been considering what we mean when we preserve objects\, paintings\, and artifacts of all kinds. With the abstracted still life images shown here\, she thinks about the definition of style and culture and the objects we choose to save to record our time. She uses the technique of collage\, reassembling elements to sculpt\, build and construct images. The papers and fabrics come from many sources – magazines\, newspapers\, photographs and paper and fabric.  \nYvonne’s art is inspired by themes of preservation and culture. Her art seeks to sculpt still life images with familiarity\, but are not replications. The materials used in her collages come from a variety of sources\, she utilizes magazines and newspapers\, her own photographs\, and paper and fabric she textured and colored.  \n

This event will take place on March 8\, 2019. We will announce first\, second\, and third place award winners as well as all honorable mentions. \nThe New Brunswick Art Salons’ main aim is to build relationships and connections between local artists and the community. Talented artists from diverse backgrounds have been drawn into these exhibitions for the past eight years. \nThe New Brunswick Art Salons consists of three unique showings of oil color\, water color and mixed media artworks. \nThe Oil Color and Mixed Media exhibit\, “An Expanse of Expressionism” was held on April – June. The featured artwork boasted a wide array of visual aesthetics ranging from the impressionistic to the abstract style that expressionism is renowned for. \nOn June – August\, the “Visceral and Visionary” exhibition featured fine art from twenty artists specializing in all media. \nFrom October – December Alfa hosted “Transfiguration of the Form: Watercolor and Mixed Media” which featured nineteen local and international artists who specialized in the use of water color\, gel\, charcoal\, oil pastels and more. \nThe Alfa Art Gallery was delighted to have Rocco Scary as a judge of the New Brunswick Art Salon 2018 exhibitions. An active multi-disciplinary artist by himself\, Rocco Scary always brings exceptional perspective to the NBAS 2018 exhibitions. Rocco Scary is also an accomplished denizen of the art world accruing multiple awards and accolades from the New Jersey State Arts Council Fellowship to the Essex County Arts Council.

Various mixed media pieces are also featured which compliment watercolor. These works cover a variety of artistic styles and subject matter. Viewers of all interests will find works that speak to them. Artists such as Allison Maletz and Indrani Choudhury take subjects directly from daily life such as wildlife\, people or landscapes and use delicate techniques and strong attention to detail to create works that resemble familiar life-scenes. DESCRIPTION:New Brunswick Art Salon 2018 – Oil Color and Mixed Media: “An Expanse of Expressionism”\n Exhibition Duration: April 24th\, 2018 — June 16th\, 2018\n Opening Reception:  Friday\, April 27th\, 2018 @ 6:30pm \nBeginning on April 24th\, Alfa Art Gallery will commence one of its flagship exhibitions\, the 2018 New Brunswick Art Salon for Oil Color and Mixed Media. This display\, celebrating the aesthetic mastery of gifted painters\, will be initiated with a cozy and intimate opening ceremony to be held on Friday\, April 27th at 6:30pm and hosted by Alfa. Attendees of this event will become familiarized with a diverse array of wondrous artworks spanning the colorfully abstract to the otherworldly and surreal. \nThough expressionism is a substantial theme of our Oil Color & Mixed Media Exhibition\, the featured artists at Alfa will boast a wide array of visual aesthetics ranging from the impressionistic to the abstract style that expressionism is renowned for. Charity Henderson’s body of work serves to explores various psychological states through mixed media impressionistic paintings of the human face. Similarly\, Debora Thedinga utilizes impressionism in order to manipulate light\, color and space thus crafting a landscape that can be viewed successfully through the small window of the canvas. In slight contrast to her fellow featured artists\, Tricia Miho offers a more surrealist aesthetic with paintings reminiscent of Salvador Dalí. Her work explores the progression of images and how such progression enables the transformation of metaphysical creations. \nAlfa’s Oil Color & Mixed Media Exhibition will also display artworks that are more consistent with expressionism\, particularly in the realm of the abstract. Colleen Lineberry’s works celebrate natural beauty as captured through her mind’s eye resulting in in vibrantly colorful motifs presenting near otherworldly landscapes. In a fashion akin to Lineberry’s abstract aesthetic\, Enrique Zaldivar utilizes color and inspiration from the natural world to illustrate issues inherent to human beings and satisfy his constant need to express himself. Kathleen Shaver’s artistry can be described as a quest for the beauty which lies within human impulse and the primal. Leona Tenebruso-Shultes similarly explores this primality by adorning her canvas with impassioned brushstrokes and expressive colors and finally. They worked through a spectrum of styles from photo-realism to abstractions. The “Introspective Concepts of Reality” was a group exhibition hosted on May – June and exclusively showcased thirteen artists who could bring their awareness and artistic outlook to Alfa’s audience and the greater New Brunswick area. This exhibition focused on developing an opportunity to connect cultural gaps and explore diverse perspectives within the community with the use of mixed media. On June – July\, the “Summer Collective” exhibition featured fine art from nine artists specializing in all media. On November – December Alfa hosted “The DNA of Form: Watercolor and Mixed Media” which featured ten local and international artists who specialized in the use of water color\, gel\, charcoal\, oil pastels and more. \nThe Alfa Art Gallery was delighted to have Rocco Scary as a judge of the New Brunswick Art Salon 2017 exhibitions. An active multi-disciplinary artist by himself\, Rocco Scary always brings exceptional perspective to the NBAS 2017 exhibitions. Rocco Scary is also an accomplished denizen of the art world accruing multiple awards and accolades from the New Jersey State Arts Council Fellowship to the Essex County Arts Council.

At Alfa’s “DNA of the Form“ exhibition\, viewers will be treated to visual delights crafted from water color\, gel\, charcoal\, oil pastel\, flashe paint\, paper collages\, and more. Visual art from the electrifyingly abstract to the compositionally stunning will be available for everyone to see. Featuring both local and international names\, the pictorial artworks on display will compel attendees to conceive possibilities beyond the forms they are presented using their own imaginations and intuitions. Concepts ranging from the capturing of human forms within the vibrant worlds they inhabit to lively dances of color and texture will anchor this upcoming exhibition. The surreal will cohabitate with the sublime as the numerous artistic perspectives show the public a sampling of their bodies of their work.  \nAbout the artists:  \nPatricia Bender‘s work avoids timelessness\, using light and chemicals to cast her processed work back in time. Jonathan Horowitz approaches texture with similar intensity and brightness\, but with deeper variety across his two-dimensional surfaces. Carol O’ Neill and Leslie Sheryll  utilize an eclectic use of materials to highlight the variance of texture when used as a substitute for light. The work of watercolor artist Evgenia Klimenko\, features prominent use of human subjects in semi-surreal relation to the elements\, fragments\, and companions of daily life. Fragmentation of human artifacts is an equally important focus to the abstracted works of Ilona Sochynsky. Look quickly at one of Peter Arakawa‘s pieces and you might only see that chaos of daily life\, but look further to find the organized ballet of colors. Using watercolors to tell stories with targeted subjects and underlying subjective elements\, Robert Stetz paintings are impressive. Tracy Coons offers collages of natural forms overlain with dense text and unnatural geometric patterns of muddled color. Ken C. Hamilton strives to bring out beauty and dignity as the world around him presents a widespread dichotomy of fragile\, elusive and often conflicting tensions\, in a way that only watercolors can. \nAbout New Brunswick Art Salon (NBAS) exhibitions:  \nEvery year\, Alfa Art Gallery hosts a series of New Brunswick Art Salon (NBAS) exhibitions. DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception: Friday\, February 3rd\, from 6:30pm – 10:00pm  \nExhibition Duration: February 1st- March 14th 2017 \nAlfa Art Gallery will be hosting the seasonal New Brunswick Art Salon: Photography Exhibition featuring the Raritan Photographic Society (RPS).  \nThe Raritan Photographic Society is New Jersey’s oldest photography club\, founded in 1929. The society’s members are united in a common passion for photography and a desire to become better artists. They are also members of the New Jersey Federation of Camera Clubs and the Photographic Society of America. This allows the group to attend lectures\, digital and print competitions to improve their technical and creative skills in photography. Both professional and amateur photographers choose to work in a wide spectrum of styles from photo-realism to abstraction as well as members who are still looking to find their own style. \nOur featured artists are Richard Doerr\, Barbara Eggermann\, Paul Eggermann\, Carol Petscavage\, Bill Petscavage\, Ellen Reardon\, Jamie Shombert\, Susan Powell and Kedar Wani. \nRichard Doerr the President of RPS is an annual artist for the New Brunswick Art Salon. He has developed a speakers program that has featured various photographers instructing their knowledge. His commitment and passion for the arts has inspired others to become more involved in the community. Barbara Eggermann and Jamie Shombert both members of the RPS and artists partaking in the annual exhibition assist with Alfa Art Gallery to ensure the event is better than the last. Photography allows Eggermann to express her emotions and fully convey her point of view through a story only she can tell. On the other hand\, Shombert’s photography is more vague which allows the viewer to create their own narrative using their imagination. \nJoin Alfa Art Gallery in the opportunity to celebrate the achievements and talent of the photographers. The wide varieties of genres include landscapes\, nature\, architecture\, abstract objects\, and figures. Each artist develops their own style and narrative through their pieces\, providing the viewer to be just as creative. Please join Alfa Art Gallery for a night of enjoying intricate artworks during the happy holiday time. \n  \nAbout the Artists:  \nAlfa Art Gallery’s “Tis the Season” features many talented artists. \n  \nMadeline Polymeropolous\, has resided in New Brunswick for the past 40 years.  Throughout her career\, she has experienced the variety of the world\, having traveled her hometown of Dallas\, Texas to Greece to Boston where she received her B.F.A. and M.F.A.  from Boston University with a concentration in Painting and Drawing. In addition to her outstanding resume\, Polymeropoulos has a MS from Parsons in Visual Arts and Museum Education.      \nPolymeropoulos finds inspiration from her experiences within the world.  Her works exhibit colorful and textured landscapes and figures through bold expression of geometric shapes.  Works are on paper constructed through mixed media of oil sticks\, acrylics\, pencil\, and collage.   \n  \nMichael Fenton\, a New Jersey artist\, was born and raised in upstate New York but has lived in New Jersey for the past 30 years residing in Morris Plains. He is a painter who works in a variety of different modes and sizes\, ranging from Korean folk painting to realism to near-impressionism. Working primarily from the memory and imagination\, he attempts to distill his images to a point where there is a powerful emotional resonance\, without being specific or didactic. He paints primarily in Korean Water Color\, oil and acrylic\, and the vast majority of his works involve the figure in one way or another. Fenton’s paintings comprise several distinct\, yet interrelated bodies of work. In addition to his studio work\, he also continues studying the ancient Korean folk art and drawing in a private capacity.  \nMichael focuses on portraits which should evoke emotions from the viewer. His subjects are painted naturalistically and show great detail. He focuses on detail by making use of lighting (light and dark colors) within the painting. The subject’s emotions can be seen by the body language. A perfect example of his work is his “Chet Baker” portrait\, the painting casts the subject in a dark area with a light illuminating the weathered details of the subjects face. \n  \nAgop Gemdjian accomplishes classical techniques of etching in his prints\, supplemented with the emotional atmosphere that he creates with sudden bright colored stresses\, odd surrealistic states\, and metamorphoses of figures and objects. There is a well-mastered combination of heterogeneous figurative components – images\, color spots with abstract impact\, embossed elements and even personal poetry entwined in the pictorial space. All of this creates an instinctual density and an active suggestion of the works these features manifest themselves especially in the plastic works of Agop Gemdjian. Compound works with six\, nine\, or twelve prints\, drawings and plastic collages\, combining real objects\, various matters\, light and words lead the feelings and the thoughts of the spectator into a complex picture of human states\, where the spirit tries to break away of the enormous heaps of the material world\, and to purify itself.  \n  \nJohn Hawaka paints for the sheer enjoyment of doing so because he loves the challenge. He enjoys being a studio with brush in hand\, facing a “blank canvas.” Over the years he has experimented with many mediums and techniques-from casein to oil to acrylic from wood to canvas to laminate. Currently\, he uses a mixture of lacquer and several other mediums on laminate. He uses the lacquer mixture for its fluidity and the laminate for its smooth surface\, which allows the paint to flow freely. Alfa Art Gallery is proud to announce that they are Exclusive Representatives of John Hawaka.   \n  \nVesselin Kourtev has over 20 years of experience as a professional fine artist. Born and raised in Bulgaria\, Vesselin Kourtev received a high school degree in Fine Art from the Fine Arts School in the historic city Kazanluk\, as well as his MFA degree from The Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Veliko Turnovo\, the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire.  From 1989 until 2002\, Vesselin worked for the National School of Stage and Film Design in Plovdiv\, Bulgaria. In the years following\, he remained active within the Bulgarian art community and participated in a large number of national and international exhibitions and competitions. Vesselin was featured in The Good Living Magazine from Saint Peter’s University Hospital\, New Brunswick in 2008 and has exhibited his work in over a dozen shows across New Jersey and New York.  \n  \nAndrei Medvedev Graduated from the Department of Theatre Set Design at “Memory of Year 1905” Art College.  Medvedev’s works are now in Moscow Tretyakov State Gallery and in many high profile personal collections around the world. Andrei Medvedev has developed his own style\, which has close connection to his authentic personality and his insight into people’s souls and psychology. Without leaving beauty behind\, Andrei gives his paintings depth of thought\, and questioning of the main forces present in all of humanity: good and bad\, hope and fear. The Russian artist has been painting since the age of four\, when his grandfather first encouraged him to pursue and develop his talent. Now\, as an adult\, we can sense in his creations the strong influence and inspiration he found in artist Diego Velasquez\, Medvedev’s most favored artist. The resemblance is most clear in observing Medvedev’s work and Velasquez’ greatest creation\, Las Meninas. \n

From using the power of the Feminine and Nature to form personal myth-stories by  Lauren Curtis\, to connections between silence and mindfulness that have captured depth within spirituality in relation to the world from Maria Bouquet\, all of our artist are coming together to lessen the divide between artist and the community. Reminiscent of the Art Salons of the 18th and 19th century\, the New Brunswick Art Salon was launched to promote the ever-evolving advances in the arts. Please join Alfa Art Gallery for a night of celebrating an exclusive glimpse into multifaceted impressions of the ever-changing human experience. \n  \nAbout Artists:\n“L’Appel Du Vide” features many talented artists\, both renowned and currently establishing themselves.  \nDorothea Berkhout uses her Dutch heritage to mimic still lifes of the 15th and 16th centuries in classical settings. She is interested with shadow and light\, along with highlighting objects to reflect the angle of light making her subjects appear almost palpable. Her passion for nature influenes her to paint still lives\, scenery\, and figures. Her paintings exhibit a realistic approach and perspective.  She prefers to paint with oils as they provide the ability to intensify paintings and subjects by layering the paint and increasing depth. Having traveled both nationally and internationally\, her paintings render the beauty\, balance\, and order that is portrayed in her work.  \nElinor Meeks has been making pictures with words and visual mediums for as long as she can remember.  Connecting and reflecting in these ways helped her adapt to frequent moves in this country and abroad growing up\, and lead to her work in documentary film production and public television programming and to her writing for publications including The New York Times\, The Christian Science Monitor\, and Medium.  Her lifelong engagement with art — begun with the hours spent painting watercolors with her grandmother — is expanding into collage and mixed media and to a first-time focus on exhibition and creative community building activities. \nEnrique Zaldiver uses his tropical Cuban heritage along with his appreciation for the colorful autumns of the United States for the inspiration of his artwork.  Avoiding mixing more than two colors\, Zaldiver’s surreal landscapes exhibit simple and profound use of color.  With the use of the expressive properties of acrylic paint\, he employs complementary colors to create balance. The landscapes reflect the meaning of life\, death\, freedom\, religion\, power\, and exile—themes Zaldivar holds dear. \nFrancisco Araneo’s world was shook when he began suffering from a severe spinal injury and autoimmune disease.  This self-proclaimed “hard-core athlete” began painting as therapy\, deriving his artistic style from a dream during one of the worst nights of his illness.  Spending several years alone and confined to a wheelchair\, Araneo found hope and healing by painting his dreams as subject of his art.  His paintings preach strength through difficult times.  All of his hard work has led him to having solo shows in New York City. \nJoel Rudin creates imaginary\, mystical\, surreal\, and foreboding landscapes. His palette consists of mostly veiled and muted colors\, evoking old photographs. Rudin creates a sense of vastness and space of faraway vistas with distant formations half seen in the mist. Rudin’s artistic career was foreshadowed when as a child\, his sixth grade teacher\, sympathetic to his art leanings\, was assigned to create an image of the solar system in color chalks across the classroom blackboard. Rudin’s principal medium is pastel\, thinly applied\, mixed with other materials\, pencil\, crayon\, oil pastel\, watercolor and gouache.  \nLauren Curtis focuses on the interconnectedness of art\, spirituality and culture.  She expresses her beliefs recalling the power of the Feminine and Nature.  Curtis’ art is inspired by various mythological and symbolic systems of both ancient and modern cultures.  Using artwork and photography\, often inspired her travels within the US and Europe to tell personal stories of the world as she experienced it\, and of herself as an individual in that world. Respecting the differences of people\, as well as their similarities\, Curtis tells her stories.  When creating art\, Curtis uses diverse materials\, and for each piece\, selects the media that best exemplifies the symbols and subjects. Whether it’s through painting\, collage\, or photography\, each image becomes it’s own personal myth-story. \nLyle Kleinhans studied drawing and sculpture at the University of Wisconsin in the 1950’s\, but his life diverged from that interest when the exigencies of supporting a family interceded.  His interest in art had diminished however\, and over the years Lyle visited many of the major museums of Europe and the U.S.  Now\, after a break of 55 years\, he returns to his first love – art.  Kleinhans has been drawing for 4 years and painting for the last 2 years. Kleinhans’ works through abstract figurative representations in oil.  Kleinhans’ paintings are another picture of reality viewed through the skewed or jaundiced filter of his mind.  This filter works to deepen the mystery of life and cast light on the existence of life. \nMaria Bouquet’s spiritual experiences and personal transformations of herself and others inspire her art.  The connections between silence and mindfulness have acted as a transforming agent in Bouquet’s life\, aiming to capture depth within spirituality in relation to the world.  She considers herself a seeker\, always searching for truth and knowledge and living with a purpose.  Beauty and abundance in the world combined with questions like “Why am I here?” and “Who am I” govern Bouquet’s growth and works.   \nMeredith Turshen\, an artist\, teacher\, and writer  currently teaching at Rutgers University New Brunswick\, began her art studies at age ten at the Art Students League in New York with Saturday classes for children.  After majoring in studio art at Oberlin College\, Turshen has participated in workshops at Pratt\, the Printmaking Council of NJ\, the Rutgers Center for Innovative Printmaking\, the CT Center for Graphic Arts\, and elsewhere.  Through her artwork\, she reflects on nature\, the mystery of the human figure.  Her paintings reflect an interest in body movement and dance theater\, particularly the work of Alwin Nikolais.  She exhibits regularly in the New York metropolitan region\, with Viridian Gallery in Chelsea\, and with hob’art\, an arts cooperative based in Hoboken.  \nMichael Hanna’s art is a culmination from a lifetime of training and experimentation\, a style which he refers to as industrial planes. The key element in his paintings is tension from many variables\, which make his works quite complex. In all formats of his art– paintings\, experimental paintings\, drawings\, and digital– cyberpunk culture acts as theme. Hanna’s experimental paintings with oil on steel\, electronic components\, and crystals\, have an analysis of a deeply exotic\, hi-tech future\, in a state of social collapse. With emerging advanced technologies such as fusion\, quantum computing\, artificial intelligence\, and biological engineering\, Hanna believes it is his role as an artist to address his current world.  Hanna comments on the world’s ever increasing reliance on technology\, the destabilization and collapse of nations from the Middle East to Ukraine\, the increasingly authoritarian and oligarchic structure of Western society\, and provides perceptions as to the social reaction\, context\, and rebellion of our transition to an age of transhumanism. He makes art which is complex and cerebral.  \nPaul Mordetsky finds his primary inspiration from landscapes.  Using landscapes for both aesthetic and metaphorical reasons\, he represents space and light within the graphic language.  The mood and atmosphere of the scene define Mordetsky’s works. The artist works from drawings\, memory\, and news media photos as reference for the mood and atmosphere of the piece.  \nTania Ianovskaia uses her works to reflect her identity and life.  As the artist changes\, so does her art.  As Ianovskaia experiences life events and struggles\, these themes demonstrate themselves in her works.  Ianovskaia immerses herself in the pieces\, living in the painting rather than reality.    \nTeriz Michael\, born in Cairo\, Egypt\, began her intensive art studies in High School and continued until earning a BFA in fine arts.  After traveling extensively in Egypt\, she uses her photographs as references for paintings and drawings.  Some of her most notable abstract works of art are derived from memory\, emotion\, and spirituality.  Her work has earned her various awards that includes receiving a Sila Rhodes Scholarship at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. \nVadim Levin was born in Minsk\, Belarus and grew up among famous artists who have inspired his artwork.  Levin creates works that represent his view on the world\, the complexity of life\, his feelings\, vision and personality. The works aim to make people think and revisit every day values.  All Levin’s current paintings feature oil on canvas. Currently\, Vadim Levin and his family reside in East Brunswick\, NJ.

The 13 featured artists are prominent local figures whom have exhibited their work in gallery shows throughout the greater New York area or have worked with Alfa Art Gallery in previous exhibitions. Through the exhibition\, you will witness local talents from the New Brunswick area\, and beyond\, whom reflect and inspire the rich artistic culture of the community.  \n“Movements in Nature: Perspectives of Being” focuses on ebb and flow of life\, matter\, and nature. Thus\, providing a glance into one’s experience of nature’s materialized essence\, both tangible and intangible. From the unrestrained watercolors of Hanna Aviv\, to the deconstructed figural representations by Verdiana Patacchini\, bear witness to the broad interpretations of life in flux\, through unbridled color\, experimental texture\, and limitless gesture. Please join Alfa Art Gallery for a night of celebrating an exclusive glimpse into multifaceted impressions of the ever-changing human experience. \n  \nAbout Artists\n“Movements in Nature: Perspectives of Being” will feature many talent artists\, both renowned and those currently establishing themselves. Hana Aviv has excelled as a local artist over the past decade\, continuing to hone her artistic process and style. Working as a pathologist at Rutgers University Robert Wood Johnson\, she spent her nights taking art classes at a variety of institutions\, where she found her artistic match working with watercolors. Watercolor gives Hana a freedom she was not able to find in other media. She focuses her work on life painting and expressions of nature where she draws upon color and fluidity to create dynamic works. In particular\, her series of flower paintings seem to depict bright bushels of  nature that blur the line between contained objectivity and open expression\, as evidenced in her loose\, broad brushstrokes. \nSimilar in style and subjectivity\, Thea Berkhout depicts the world in a recognizable yet innovative manner. She is an artist\, as well as an Associate Dean at Rutgers University\, in the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning & Public Policy. Her artwork consists of images such from life\, such as still life\, landscape\, and explorations of the nude figure. \nKaren Terry is a lifelong artist\, always returning to painting as a meditation. Her pieces are inspired bythe universality of nature and landscape\, often depicting simple snapshots of the seasons or weather.She works in mixed media but thrives using sumi-ink\, departing from classical Eastern painting and manipulating the medium to produce modern pieces. Her paintings in the NBAS Part II Exhibition are dark\, vague landscapes produced with the sumi-ink wash\, and emphasize a dreamlike experience of  nature. Terry emphasizes the merit of her art is dedicated to peace. \nGregg Bautista is a recent graduate from Rutgers’ Mason Gross School of the Arts\, there he concentrated in painting\, with a minor in Art History. He utilizes water color to create dark abstractions and loose figural forms. His work blends forms and color to create new landscapes and figures\, which challenges the viewers’ perception of these historically and traditionally known aspects of nature and art.  \nKaren Starrett\, a trained educator and artist\, has exhibited her work in over 60 shows throughout the United States over the past decade. Her educational roots stem from Rutgers University\, our local neighbor\, and she has expanded her work since then. Starrett works with mixed media\, from painting to assemblage and collage. Her process is dynamic and spontaneous\, where new forms build off of previous ones\, creating personal and nostalgic scenes for the artist. Her mixed media collages that are exhibited in the New Brunswick Art  Salon Part II are engaging and multidimensional in space\, portraying an abstraction of nature and form. \nDonna Payton has an MFA from the Otis Art Institute of Los Angeles and is a recipient of the New Jersey Print and Paper Grant from the Brodsky Center at Rutgers University. Payton uses very bright colors and highlights to bring her paintings to life. The subjects of her paintings consist of everyday household- objects\, but the use of color brings importance to these images.  \nRida Fatima has an Associate degree in Interior Design. She won “Best In Show” in December\, 2013 at the Old Orchard Gallery. Fatima uses watercolor to create paintings of wood\, trees\, and flowers. The main elements of her paintings emphasize depth\, perspective\, mystery\, texture\, and color. She emphasizes that art is her personal language through which she can talk without saying a word.  \nSusan Gilli also utilizes the power of mystery\, texture\, and color in her work. She focuses on depicting subjects of nature in flux. She presents the brilliant electricity of life through her usage of bright colors and intricate yet explosive brushwork. Her artwork is partially abstract\, and her mediums of choice are acrylics and mixed media. \nVerdiana Patacchini has her roots in Italy and now works fluidly between Italy and the United States. She creates multimedia images and compositions where she finds painting to be the ideal medium  to bridge the gap between nature\, the imagination\, and reality.  \nJeffrey Pullen obtained his BFA and MFA from the Pratt Institute of New York. He uses oil on wood to create portraits of landscapes\, which are mainly focused on New York City. Specifically\, he has created impressive landscapes of Times Square. He has taken part in almost 40 solo exhibitions nation-wide\, along with 70 group shows. In his work\, he presents realistic images on  nontraditional surfaces. In this current exhibit\, his paintings depict imagery of the city which communicate with the complex sculptural forms of the surfaces.  \nTania Sen also plays with the  viewers’ ability to interpret different realities in her work. She was born in Kolkata\, India\, but she currently lives and works in New York and New Jersey. Sen received her Masters in  Communications Arts from the New York Institute of Technology. Sen utilizes mixed media to create pieces that speak to the materialization/dematerialization of the world. She is influenced  by media signage\, pop culture\, and the thoughtful perceptions of pop culture reality. Sen has taken part in past exhibitions at Alfa Art Gallery. \nIndrani Choudhury was born in Calcutta\, India and worked as a biomedical research scientist for 25 years. Upon moving to New Jersey in the 1990’s\, she began to feel that her life was  incomplete. This void led to her becoming a full-time self-taught painter in 2005. Entirely self-taught\, Indrani works solely in watercolors\, transforming the medium beyond its typical constraints to produce the texture and richness of acrylics and oils. Her portraits consist of nature scenes and miscellaneous objects.  \nDustin Garafalo also utilizes watercolor to create mainly landscape scenes consisting of gradients of dark colors\, rather than deep contrasts of  lightness and darkness as seen in Indrani Choudhury’s work. His working pace tends to be fast\, due to the fact that he combines charcoal\, acrylics\, graphite\, and oils. Garafalo focuses on  subjects in nature. He is currently working on obtaining an MFA in Drawing and Painting from the State University of New York\, at Albany. \n
