Each photograph invites viewers to pause and notice the quiet rhythms of everyday life. The exhibition brings together artists with diverse perspectives\, yet all are united by a shared commitment to observing and honoring the world we inhabit. \nAbout the New Brunswick Art Salon Initiative: \nAlfa Art Gallery\, since opening in 2008\, later 2010 hosted New Brunswick Art Salons (NBAS) in an effort to support established and emerging artists. Alfa has made an effort to showcase pieces from all media\, from watercolor\, oil\, photography\, and mixed media. We believe that visual art is a universal form of expression that can bridge cultural gaps and provide a forum where diverse perspectives can be shared and appreciated. Within this non-profit organization\, Alfa Art Gallery maintains its mission to uplift artists by providing an open and innovative environment that is dedicated to fostering a vibrant and diverse cultural community. Alfa Art Gallery has grown into New Brunswick’s Cultural Hub by exhibiting over five hundred artists and by hosting multidisciplinary community events in honor of the visual arts. \nExploring “Reflections of the Living World”:   \n“Reflections of the Living World\,” a New Brunswick Art Salon Photography Exhibition\, unites thirteen artists with varied methodologies and visual approaches. The exhibition examines photography as a tool for reflecting on and reinterpreting our relationship with the world. Alfa Art Gallery invites visitors to engage with images that move fluidly between the natural\, human\, and psychological—where landscapes\, textures\, observation\, and imagination intersect.   \nThroughout the exhibition\, artists examine narrative through both subtle and striking means\, from the quiet patterns and organic rhythms found in nature to more introspective and experimental works that blur the line between the known and the unknown. Some photographs emphasize materiality and surface\, while others reveal emotional depth through fragmentation\, abstraction\, and altered perspectives. Together\, these works form a dynamic dialogue between technique and meaning\, offering viewers a layered and immersive experience that reflects the complexity\, beauty\, and vitality of the living world.  \n2026 NBAS Featured Artists in Photography: \nAlan Chimacoff  is a photographer from Princeton\, New Jersey. With his architectural degrees\, which he received from Cornell and Harvard\, Chimacoff has an expertise in finding abstract and pictorial spaces. He is able to capture the intricate depths in images of architecture\, the city\, and manufactured things. Through intricacy and intriguing compositions\, Chimacoff’s view of the mundane and unusual in non-objective abstraction allows others to see the world from a different perspective through his works. Chimacoff is very proactive in the art world by being a member of Soho Photo Gallery in New York City. He has many collections in national galleries from Los Angeles to Dallas and local exhibitions in New Jersey\, including several solo and group shows. With a strong connection to Cornell and Princeton through being a professor of architecture and even designing buildings for the campuses along with other schools nationwide. In 2019\, he was a recipient of the New Jersey American Institute of Architects Michael Graves Lifetime Achievement Award\, its highest honor.    through his works.   \nArik Gorban  has been pursuing photography since he was 11 years old. Having had over 45 years of experience in the field\, he now produces both fine art-based works and hosts a variety of photography workshops and services. Growing up\, Gorban was surrounded by the art scene as he attended many museums and galleries with his family. His creative process consists of reflecting what he sees in his mind’s eye through pre-visualizing images. Over time\, he was able to take advantage of newer tools and techniques to produce images that express his intentions in a stronger manner. Gorban is an active judge in photo contests\, critiques\, and often exhibits his own photography work. Working in a variety of photo mediums\, such as darkroom photography\, analog photography\, and digital image\,s has led him to numerous photography awards and national and international publications.   \nBarry Rosenthal is a fine arts photographer and sculptor based in Brooklyn\, New York\, with a focus on environmental impact and advocacy throughout his pieces. Starting his professional art career at the Dayton Art Institute in Dayton\, Ohio\, studying photography\, which led him into street photography. While photographing the world around him\, Rosenthal noticed more and more things left behind —old toys\, gloves\, and garbage found in natural forms —seeing the battle between the natural and the unnatural. He began collecting these ocean-borne objects\, seeing them in a new light or shadow as pieces to be focused on. These unnatural objects allowed Rosenthal to see both their horror and their beauty\, prompting him to create his series of found-object photographs\, “Found in Nature.” By arranging these found objects by color or utility against dark backgrounds\, making them feel both isolated and unified\, as well as making the viewers feel comfortable with their own role in the fate of these objects and our environment as a whole. One of his most notable pieces from this series is Blue Ocean due to its vibrancy and draw\, allowing this to be his first piece to receive national attention. This series gained Rosenthal a lot of notability; his images can be found in many prestigious museums\, such as the MOMA\, the Springfield Art Museum\, as well as being featured in the New York Times\, National Geographic\, CBS News\, and The Weather Channel\, bringing national and international attention to his pieces and our environmental impact. Most recently\, Rosenthal is working on his sculptural work\, including Sea Goddess\, a wall-mounted sculpture made from found straws\, blue sea netting\, and a large inflatable doll.   \nBrian Hallas is a photographer and digital artist from Shrewsbury Township\, New Jersey. He employs his iPhone to craft colorful and hallucinogenic collages. He experiments with layering and blending techniques to create improvisations that evoke dreams and transcendence. He is inspired by his surroundings and is able synthesize technology and nature into eccentric compositions. Flowers are overlayed onto grand cathedrals and rollercoasters\, and humans become lost in an array of color and texture. Hallas’ pursuit of photography is his most recent artistic development\, as he comes from a background in sound design and performance. His experience within this field informs the stratified and spontaneous nature of his images. Hallas’ works have been shown in museums and galleries\, hang in many private collections in the US\, and have been featured in several online magazines. Hallas provides an escape through immersion in a psychedelic\, yet familiar sublime.    \nFrederick Doerfler\, Jr. is an American digital photographer based near Pittsburgh\, Pennsylvania. His work explores the dialogue between the natural and built environment\, often through urban reflections\, architectural abstraction\, and travel landscapes. Doerfler describes being influenced by his work as a physician\, dedicating a similar kind of attention to precision\, pattern\, and narrative to his photographic practice. His photographs of urban architecture defamiliarize everyday edifices through an appreciative lens of their architectural and geometric beauty\, creating symphonic compositions of light\, shape\, and color. Doerfler currently serves as President of the Pittsburgh Photography Club (est. 1885) and Executive Vice President of the Photographic Society of America (PSA).  \nGerald Slota is a New Jersey–based fine artist and photographer known for redefining the boundaries of photography through deconstruction and reinvention. Trained in traditional techniques\, he became fascinated by what happens when images are altered—torn\, burned\, or drawn upon—to reveal new emotional and psychological depths. His fragmented compositions blur the line between memory and imagination\, transforming photographs into intimate visual narratives. Slota’s work has been exhibited internationally at institutions such as the George Eastman House\, Langhans Galerie in Prague\, and Ricco/Maresca Gallery in New York City\, and featured in The New Yorker\, Aperture\, and The New York Times Magazine. He has received numerous honors\, including a Polaroid 20”x24” Grant and a MacDowell Artist Residency\, and created a large-scale mural for the Norton Museum of Art in 2021. For Slota\, art is an act of excavation—each mark uncovers hidden truths. His work finds beauty in fragmentation\, inviting viewers to see how the past lingers within the reimagined image.  \nJacki Dickert is a New Jersey–based fine art and nature photographer whose work celebrates the wonder\, beauty\, and quiet magic of the natural world. Growing up exploring the woods and climbing trees\, Dickert developed an early fascination with nature’s rhythms and hidden details. The daughter of a nature photographer\, she absorbed the art form from a young age\, nurturing a lifelong passion for observing and capturing the world through her lens.A transformative trip to Iceland in 2006 inspired Dickert to pursue photography more seriously\, seeking to share the sense of awe she experiences in wild places—whether in distant landscapes or the familiar woods near her home. Her work ranges from sweeping vistas to intricate studies of patterns\, light\, and texture\, revealing the artistry inherent in nature itself. Through her photography\, Dickert invites viewers to slow down and rediscover the beauty that exists all around them. Her images evoke peace\, wonder\, and gratitude\, reflecting her belief that the natural world offers endless inspiration and healing. Now teaching photography and contributing her art to environmental causes\, Dickert continues to blend creativity and conservation\, using her camera as both a tool for expression and a means to celebrate life’s everyday magic.  \nJeremy Dennis is a contemporary fine-art photographer who lives and works in Southampton\, New York\, on the Shinnecock Indian Reserve. He is an alumnus from both Stony Brook University (BA ‘13) and Pennsylvania State University (MFA ‘16). Dennis is able to use his camera to transport viewers to an otherworldly narrative of oral stories. These narratives include themes of Indigenous identity\, culture\, and colonial assimilation\, and draw from other histories and contemporary experiences. Jeremy Dennis is able to use his photography in order to uplift BIPOC experiences and voices. He also does this through being the founder of Ma’s House & BIPOC Art Studio\, Inc\, whose mission is to uplift Indigenous and BIPOC voices. This non-profit art house is also located on the Shinnecock Indian Reserve. Dennis’ artwork draws on his own personal and communal histories\, utilizing themes of identity\, resilience\, and visibility in his community. His most prominent projects for these themes are On This Site–Native Long Island (2016-ongoing)\, Rise (2018-ongoing)\, Nothing Happened Here\, Stories–Indigenous Oral Stories\, Dreams\, and Myths (2013-ongoing). He is currently on the advisory boards of The Boys & Girls Club of the Shinnecock Nation\, The Bridgehampton Museum\, The Church of Sag Harbor\, WNET Group’s THIRTEEN/WLIW Community Advisory Board\, and Ma’s House & BIPOC Art Studio\, Inc. Dennis’s most recent award is an Artist to Artist Fellowship from the Art Matters Foundation.   \nJoanne Ross is a visual artist based in the tri-state area. Originally growing up in Queens\, NYC\, she received an MFA in Photography from SUNY Buffalo/Visual Studies Workshop\, an MS in Art Education from Syracuse University\, and a BA in Art Education from Buffalo State College. She uses her photography to capture deeper meanings\, telling stories with each photograph. Ross focuses on cultural commentary\, from climate change to the impacts of war. With her photographs and archival work\, she is able to piece together narratives of identity and the larger impact of the culture that we are enveloped in\, even when we do not notice it. She edits and crops her photos to perfectly tell these stories\, both through highlighting certain objects and obfuscating others. While photography is her main medium\, she has worked with physical objects\, such as old archival finds from the past\, such as a child’s airplane toy from World War II. She has received many awards and participated in many different exhibitions\, both solo and group. Along with this\, Joanne continued to push forward her love of photography and art\, becoming a teacher. She taught photography at the International Center of Photography\, School of Visual Arts NYC\, Rockland Community College\, Ramapo College\, New Jersey City University\, and as a tenured educator in the New Jersey  School System. Her art is able to encapsulate many large social commentaries\, allowing for the audience to better understand the impact of these issues.  \nLisa Saltzman is a NYC-based fine art photographer who draws her inspiration from Impressionist painting\, abstraction\, cubism\, and figurative photography. Saltzman studied and graduated from New York University with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology. Her fascination with the human psyche is an inspiration that shines throughout her art as well. Through these inspirations\, Saltzman uses the medium of street photography. She studied this medium at Christie’s and the International Center of Photography. Her street photography is a style that Saltzman has become known for in the art world. When viewers look at her black and white photographs\, they view human emotion and the daily life of NYC. Her work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally\, while receiving several awards as well. These galleries include: First Street Gallery\, Brick Lane Gallery\, Darkroom Gallery\, and LemoArt Gallery. In terms of recognition\, Saltzman has been featured in publications such as Gelatin Magazine\, Art of the Times\, L’Oeil de la Photographie\, and Bellus Magazine.   by. \nMark Aizenberg is an award-winning photographer based in Wynnewood\, PA\, whose work merges artistic vision with scientific curiosity. Trained as a neuroscientist\, Aizenberg explores how the human mind perceives and organizes visual information—a fascination that deeply informs his fine art and aerial photography. His compositions transform everyday landscapes into abstract studies of line\, curve\, and contrast\, inviting viewers to experience familiar spaces with renewed wonder. Aizenberg’s minimalist approach emphasizes simplicity and structure\, using black and white imagery to reveal the hidden rhythms of natural and urban environments.  \nAn active member of the Main Line Art Center and the Main Line Camera Club\, Aizenberg’s work has been featured in exhibitions and publications both nationally and internationally. His photographs—recognized by institutions such as the Philadelphia Sketch Club\, Pennsylvania Center for Photography\, and Wayne Art Center—reveal an enduring commitment to capturing the beauty\, order\, and emotion that arise when art and science converge.  \nPatricia Worley is a New Jersey–based photographer whose passion for photography began in high school and continued to grow throughout her college years\, during which she earned a degree in film and television. After pausing her career to raise her children\, she returned to photography with renewed focus\, studying landscape photography with master photographers around the world. She has traveled to more than 35 countries and most of the United States\, refining her skills and developing a deep appreciation for the ways light shapes the natural world. In addition to her creative work\, she teaches photography\, from camera basics to advanced editing\, helping students cultivate both technical skill and creative vision.  \nWorley’s photography reflects her lifelong curiosity about nature and her sensitivity to light and atmosphere. While her early work explored global landscapes\, her more recent focus has been on wildlife and the night sky. Her Nightscapes series captures the quiet beauty of starlit skies while drawing attention to the growing effects of light pollution. Through her images\, Worley encourages viewers to pause\, look upward\, and reconnect with the wonder of the night\, a reminder of how much of the world’s natural beauty is worth preserving.  \nSteven Kushner is a photographer based in New Jersey who focuses his work on the various aspects of observational photography. Working as a congregational rabbi\, he has always explored his interest in storytelling and continuously strives to better understand the world around him. In doing so\, he seeks beauty and meaning in the mundane\, a theme that runs through his street photography. In his works\, Kushner is drawn to photographing people interacting with their surroundings as if they were subjects within a scene\, using their passive roles as individuals as part of his methodology to contextualize their importance to a larger narrative. He also highlights his keen interest in structure\, design\, light\, and order\, noting that they have been central to his practice since 2017. Throughout his photography career\, he has also participated in various juried shows and won many prestigious awards\, including being selected by the editorial staff of Leica Fotographie International for the prestigious “Leica Master Shots” collection. Also\, in 2023\, Kushner had two images selected into the annual Photography Exhibition of the Ocean County Artists Guild\, one of which even received the award for “Best in Category: Still Life Photography. A year later\, in 2024\, his photography was accepted into the New Jersey Council on the Arts Annual\, hosted at the Montclair Art Museum\, further elevating Kushner’s work to a larger audience and continuing to promote his photography in an institutional setting. Steven Kushner’s photography catalog has been widely celebrated throughout New Jersey and continues to spark new discussions of contemporary street photography through his lens.  \nTuyet Van Truster Born in Paris\, of Vietnamese descent\, Tuyet Van Truster is an instant film photographer currently based in Jersey City\, USA. Her photographic practice first began as a fun family activity and casual pass time\, a hobby which eventually evolved into a burning artistic passion and a love for the tactile qualities and experimental possibilities present in film photography. She describes developing a yearning for the sound of the shutter button\, the rolling out of the image\, and for the mystery\, anticipation\, and excitement of the photo development process. Having a scientific background\, Truster likes to test the boundaries between control and unpredictability. Some images are corroded with different chemicals\, altered by time in order to explore the notions of reverie\, identity\, memory and wonder. Her practice demonstrates the malleability of the photographic medium and the boundless opportunities and meanings that can be expounded from film’s physical manipulation.   \nOur Sponsors

Featuring a spectrum of artistic voices\, the show moves fluidly between abstraction and naturalism\, revealing the expressive versatility of watercolor in its many forms. \nFrom atmospheric monochromes to airy pastels and richly detailed natural scenes\, a shared sensitivity to the medium’s fluid nature\, where translucency and opacity converge to create moments of both subtlety and impact\, unites these works. These diverse approaches form a visual dialogue in which color\, texture\, and form chart the balance between stillness and movement\, with each artist contributing to a collective narrative — while deeply personal — that offers universal perspectives and invites viewers to immerse themselves in shifting moods\, fleeting landscapes\, and the interplay of control and spontaneity. \nAbout the New Brunswick Art Salon Initiative: \nAlfa Art Gallery utilizes New Brunswick Art Salons to unify the local art community and beyond. Within this non-profit organization\, Alfa Art Gallery maintains its mission to uplift artists by providing an open and innovative environment that is dedicated to fostering a vibrant and diverse cultural community. \n2025 NBAS Featured Watercolor and Mixed Media Artists: \nAlaiyo Bradshaw is a Brooklyn-based artist\, illustrator\, and graphic designer. Born in London and raised in Detroit\, she first discovered watercolor as a teenager and has continued developing her art ever since. Bradshaw earned a BFA in Illustration\, Fine Arts\, and Art History from the University of Michigan and an MFA in Visual Journalism at the School of Visual Arts. She also pursued graduate studies in Art History and Painting at Pratt Institute. Her education reflects a commitment to craft\, storytelling\, and visual communication. Her work creates stories through watercolor\, often showing cultural and personal narratives. She draws familiar subjects\, like children’s stories\, dreams\, and cultural symbols\, and places them in new settings to bring fresh meaning. She often works in layers of watercolor \, using color and detail to giver her images depth and character. Today\, Bradshaw is Associate Professor and Director of the First Year Program at Parsons School of Design\, where she mentors emerging artists while continuing her professional work as an illustrator for books\, magazines\, and other publications. Her paintings and illustrations have been features in numerous solo and group exhibitions in New York City. \nAndrew Chalfen is a Philadelphia-based visual artist and musician whose work delves into the intricate interplay of patterns\, color\, and form. Beyond his visual art\, Chalfen is also a member of the instrumental indie rock band I Think Like Midnight. His work has been showcased in numerous exhibitions across the United States\, receiving several awards\, including the 2018 Bombay Sapphire Artisan Series Mid-Atlantic Regional award. \nAprajita Lal is a New Jersey-based painter whose work bridges the gap between art and nature. Lal’s interest in art was sparked as a child when her mother encouraged her to participate in the “All India Camel Color Contest.” The recognition of earning first prize in this competition motivated her to continue to explore her artistic interests. Lal capitalized on her time during the global pandemic\, taking a break from her corporate career to completely dedicate herself to painting for over three months. With the support of her family\, she then began to pursue her art professionally. Lal’s work aims to capture the beauty of nature and create tangible forms of happiness that can be shared with others. Through exploring light\, color\, and movement\, Lal captures the precious moments of peace and life found in nature. Her detailed and vibrant works evoke tranquility\, warmth\, and healing within the viewer. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCassandra Saint-Jean is a Haitian-born artist based in New Jersey whose work explores healing\, liberation\, and the beauty of the human experience. She began painting in 2020 during a period of personal transformation\, after stepping away from a healthcare career. For her\, art became a way to process emotion and reclaim her sense of self. Saint-Jean approaches painting as a nonlinear\, intuitive process that mirrors the rhythms of healing. Rather than following strict techniques or formulas\, her work unfolds naturally\, guided by emotion and presence. Through abstraction and instinctive mark-making\, she creates visual spaces that invite reflection and offer viewers a moment to slow down\, reconnect\, and consider what’s happening within themselves.\n\n \n\nDebra Bernath creates delicate works that examine the intricacies of our natural world. Focusing deeply on her subjects\, she finds inspiration in the layers and colors of nature. Bernath graduated from East Carolina University with a BFA in Textile Design\, where she studied both surface pattern and sculptural/woven and non-woven textiles. Utilizing her degree and heightened ability to break down shapes and textures\, she began creating textiles\, a profession that furthered her love for botanical artwork. Encouraged to share her perspective with others\, she reveals intimate and unnoticed views of the world around us\, creating dream-like compositions of real subjects. Her creativity and passion extend beyond just painting. She is also a photographer\, jewelry maker\, and tactile and energetic therapist who demonstrates the inherent beauty of nature and promotes the harmony between body and spirit. Uniquely composed and extremely detailed\, her work stimulates deep observation and introspection\, reminding viewers of what makes our environment and its living beings extraordinary.\n\n \nGail Wood Miller began drawing at the age of two\, inspired by her mother’s approach to drawing and painting\, a shared love of art that traces back to her grandfather\, who had taught her mother. In school\, Miller often illustrated her story assignments before putting them in words\, which eventually led her to a career teaching writing. After retiring\, she transformed her lifelong hobby into a full-time artistic practice. Her background in writing informs her art\, which often explores change\, memory\, and imagination. Whether the subject is a person\, a plant\, or a landscape\, her work invites viewers to interpret its meaning for themselves. Drawn to watercolor for its spontaneity and movement\, Miller aims to capture not just what she sees but how she imagines it\, inviting viewers to see their surroundings with new appreciation.\n\n \nIndrani Choudhury is a self-taught artist who was a biomedical research scientist for twenty-five years. Born in Calcutta\, India\, she moved to New Jersey and continued to work as a biomedical scientist. In 2006\, she knew what was missing and could return to a childhood passion for painting. Choudhury has featured her paintings at over a dozen juried art shows and galleries throughout New Jersey\, often returning to the Alfa Art Gallery. Choudhury applies watercolors with such expertise that she effortlessly displays the textures that could be made. She paints the world around her\, whether it be a frequented place\, a color\, or shadows. Choudhury is able to communicate through her passion for painting\, which allows her to reflect on how she sees the universe. She is living proof of why it is important to pursue passions and one’s dreams.\n\n \nJ. Jie Li is a New York-based contemporary artist whose work explores the fragile and complex terrain of human experience\, longing\, silence\, and impermanence. Influenced by Zen Buddhism\, Daoist philosophy\, and Schopenhauer’s reflections on desire and suffering\, she works in watercolor and mixed media to express what remains beyond words. Her process brings together figuration and abstraction\, often incorporating calligraphy\, ink\, and layered washes to evoke what she calls “inner weather.” Each stroke becomes part of a quiet search\, a gesture that lingers between memory and stillness. Rather than illustrating the visible world\, her paintings shift attention inward\, toward traces of emotion\, thought\, and presence. They hold space for contemplation\, asking the viewer to slow down and feel.\n\n \nJill Hellman is a New York born\, mixed media artist and a psychotherapist. Hellman displays and sells her work throughout the U.S and abroad. Her process highlights her intuition\, the environment that surrounds her\, as well as her own internal landscape. She has displayed her work at solo and group shows\, mainly in New Jersey and New York. Hellman has participated in many residency opportunities and painting workshops\, taking her around the world\, from New Orleans\, LA\, and Chateaux D’Orquevaux\, Orquevaux\, France. Hellman’s artwork serves as a compass on her journey towards peace in a chaotic and complex life and world.\n\n \nJoel Popadics is a nationally recognized watercolorist known for his atmospheric landscapes and mastery of light. With over 30 years of experience\, his work captures the emotional essence of nature through subtle shifts in color\, light\, and air. A BFA graduate of the School of Visual Arts in New York\, Popadics began his career in oil painting before dedicating himself fully to watercolor\, drawn to its spontaneity and expressive potential. His paintings have been exhibited across the U.S.\, including at the National Academy of Art and Design in New York and the Maritime Gallery at Mystic Seaport. His work is held in numerous public and private collections\, and he has received major awards from the Hudson Valley Art Association\, California Watercolor Association\, and New Jersey Watercolor Society. Popadics is the current President of the American Watercolor Society and a leading educator in the field\, teaching at the Ridgewood Art Institute and leading international plein air workshops. He lives in Wayne\, New Jersey\, with his wife and two sons.\n \n\nJudy Levy is a New Jersey-based mixed media artist whose work blends watercolor with ink\, fabric\, and found objects to explore texture\, contrast\, and layered meaning. Originally trained in art education\, Levy holds a BS from the University of Bridgeport and has studied oil painting\, fiber art\, and illustrative drawing at the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey and with artist Barbara Minch. Levy’s paintings often reflect her lifelong interest in nature and architectural design and her background in sewing and fabric arts. Her unique style incorporates hand-stitched elements and dry watercolor layering techniques. Recent works draw inspiration from her frequent travels to South Africa\, where she supports Ubuntu Pathways and integrates South African materials and motifs into her art. Throughout her career\, Levy has exhibited in more than 30 juried and invitational shows\, including the NJ Watercolor Society\, the Salmagundi Club in New York\, the NJ Center for Visual Arts\, and the Gaelen Art Show\, earning multiple awards for watercolor\, oil\, acrylic\, and mixed media. A former public school art teacher\, she also spent 23 years as a public relations coordinator for a school district and served over three decades as a trustee for the South Orange-Maplewood Adult School.\n\n \nKathleen Wert is a New Jersey-based artist who works primarily in watercolor and graphite\, creating quiet\, emotionally driven interpretations of the world around her. Drawing from a large collection of personal photographs\, she selects images that speak to her through a mix of shape\, color\, and feeling—then edits and reworks them to reflect her own inner response.  After recovering from eye surgery\, a watercolor workshop proved transformative\, revealing a medium that perfectly matched her interest in subtlety\, stillness\, and impermanence. Her paintings invite quiet reflection\, offering space for personal meaning where words may fall short.\n \nLynnette Shelley is an award-winning Pennsylvania artist whose practice is in mixed media animal and nature paintings. Her love for animals and the natural world can be noted throughout her artwork. Shelley’s art is created using a variety of drawing and painting techniques. She often adds multiple layers of ink and acrylic\, sometimes crosshatching\, linear painting\, and incorporated collage elements. Shelley’s nature and animal-packed works often explore life through a lens of fantasy and creativity. The works captivate viewers\, tap into the imagination\, and portray a contemporary take on the world. Shelley’s work has been displayed at a national level\, as well as regionally. Her artwork is in private collections throughout the United States\, Europe\, Canada\, and Australia. In addition to numerous exhibitions and awards\, she has participated in many special projects throughout her career. To mention a few\, she collaborated with Center Stage Arts in Health at Penn State Health and reproduced her works as giclee prints for their programs. Shelley was picked to reproduce her artwork on banners in downtown Rahway\, NJ’s arts district\, and was chosen to have her work included for a “Art Montco Wall” display set inside the King of Prussia Mall. These few special projects are a testament beyond awards and honors\, showing her talent\, artistic merit\, and connection to communities.\n

The event is free and open from August 26\, 2025\, until October 18\, 2025. \nThe Mundane in Motion exhibition brings together an eclectic mix of artists whose works explore the interplay of vibrant color and rich texture\, inviting viewers on a journey through diverse artistic landscapes. This exhibition features emotionally charged paintings and sculptures that delve into the complexities of human emotion through spontaneous mark-making and layered textures. \nAbout the New Brunswick Art Salon Initiative: \nAlfa Art Gallery utilizes the New Brunswick Art Salons to unify the local art community and beyond. Since starting the program in 2010\, Alfa has made a point to include a salon dedicated to showcasing pieces in watercolor\, oil\, photography\, and various mixed media. Over the years\, the series has only exhibited works from both established and emerging artists\, but has made fruitful connections locally and internationally through its successful programs. As a non-profit\, Alfa Art Gallery maintains its mission to uplift artists by providing an open and innovative environment that is dedicated to fostering va ibrant and diverse cultural community \nAbout Alfa Art Gallery: \nFounders and husband-wife team Vesselin and Galina Kourteva established Alfa Art Gallery with the vision of creating a cultural hub that fosters diversity\, allowing individuals from all backgrounds to connect and gain mutual understanding through art. New Brunswick is an ideal setting for this vision\, thanks to its vibrant ethnic heritage and diverse community\, enabling Alfa to engage artists and visitors from near and far. Since its inception in 2007\, the dedicated team at Alfa Art Gallery has consistently pursued this mission\, striving to provide enriching and meaningful experiences for everyone involved. \n2025 NBAS Featured Oil\, Sculpture\, and Mixed Media Artists: \nShara E Bailey is a painter whose work reveals the quiet beauty of forgotten structures and overlooked spaces. Originally from suburban Philadelphia\, Bailey draws inspiration from a variety of subjects\, ranging from natural landscapes to the built environments of the American Northeast. After earning a Ph.D. in anthropology and becoming a professor at New York University\, she turned to painting as a way to reconcile her longing for clear skies and open terrain with her life in the urban Northeast. Returning to a long-standing interest in the visual arts\, Bailey studied at the New Jersey Visual Arts Center and received early training in commercial art at North Montco Technical Career Center. Working in oil on canvas and birch panel\, Bailey captures everything from nostalgic Western views to Brooklyn streets. Her work explores the emotional resonance of place\, and the quiet intimacy found in abandoned or neglected spaces\, often ones that exist only in memory. Through her paintings\, Bailey revitalizes and reveals the hidden beauty within the mundane. \nAbbey Rosko is an oil painter whose work combines realistic and dreamlike elements to create open-ended\, emotionally charged scenes. Inspired by snapshots of her friends\, family\, and film stills\, her paintings feel familiar yet mysterious. Rosko studied studio art at Moravian College and has shared her love of art by teaching at institutions such as The Baum Art School in Allentown\, Pennsylvania\, and Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre\, Pennsylvania\, as well as working with students in local schools. Since 2021\, she has showcased her work in over thirty exhibitions around Pennsylvania. She has received support from the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation and was named a finalist for The Bennett Prize in 2025. Rosko is also an active member of the Lehigh Art Alliance and the Arts Community at Easton. The artist now resides in New Tripoli\, Pennsylvania. \nChanelle René is a self-taught contemporary painter and muralist based in Southern New Jersey whose vibrant\, mixed-media work blends abstract realism with cultural storytelling. She began painting in 2020 after a career in PR and marketing\, using her art to explore identity\, self-essence\, and the reclamation of space. Her process starts with expressive abstract underpaintings and evolves into layered figurative compositions\, incorporating materials like acrylic\, oil\, spray paint\, and metal leaf. René’s work has been exhibited widely\, including at the Noyes Museum\, Cape May MAC\, and the African American Heritage Museum\, and her murals appear throughout Atlantic City and beyond. A frequent collaborator with community organizations and museums\, she is also a grant recipient\, workshop leader\, and recent artist-in-residence in Brazil. Through her art and public engagement\, René encourages others to “Shine Your Vibe” and embrace creative expression at any stage of life. \nJonathan Yubi is a first-generation Ecuadorian American painter based in Bergenfield\, New Jersey\, whose work explores themes regarding labor\, identity\, and social unrest through narratives. Focusing on documented and undocumented construction workers\, his paintings focus on the lives and labor of construction workers\, building them into symbolic and historical scenes that link present-day struggles to broader histories of the Americas. Through these narratives\, Yubi reflects on the persistence of labor as a unifying force in Pan-American history. Yubi received his BFA from Lehman College (CUNY)\, as well as studied at the Memphis College of Art and the University of Central Florida. In addition to his studio work\, Yubi is the founder and publisher of ArtBorne Magazine\, a Central Florida arts publication dedicated to developing and advancing Orlando\, Florida’s art scene.  The works displayed showcase the backbreaking work of the construction workers\, whose tools are replaced by axes\, pikes\, and halberds\, symbols of modernity. Yubi’s art stands as a platform and encourages viewers to reject modernity and emphasize the importance of inclusion and social justice. \nKaren Goldberg is an oil painter and illustrator whose work gives the viewer a sense of peace and tranquility through her attention to detail and light reflection. She is primarily self-taught\, but attended classes at the Montclair Art Museum for several years\, as well as earned a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from St. John’s University and a Master of Arts in Arts Education from Montclair State University. Goldberg is inspired by images that impress her because of the light or reflection in the scene. Her work often depicts landscapes\, scenes\, and objects from everyday life. Her meticulous work highlights every detail of these scenes and leaves the viewer with a warm feeling of nostalgia and sentimentality. Goldberg is also dedicated to serving her community. She currently works as an Art Educator for PreK-Middle School students and is the co-creator of ‘Bumpybooks’\, which is a program that helps struggling readers of all ages learn to read. She is also the author of Funny Side Up\, which is a book of photos intended to turn any day sunny side up. \nLynda Charles is a Nigerian self-taught visual artist whose work intertwines identity\, perception\, and human connection(s). She tends to create through a lens of women’s experiences\, often using charcoal and acrylic paint to explore emotional and lifelike depth. Although she is a self-taught artist\, she did attend Ebonyi State University for a Bachelor of Science degree focusing on Applied Biology. Her artwork has gained international recognition\, her artwork has been displayed at the London Art Biennale (2023)\, the Contemporary Art Show in Paris (2024)\, as well as received an honorable mention during the 38th Chelsea International Fine Art Competition (2024). Her artwork embraces contrasting colors while holding depth emotionally and figuratively\, as the subjects come to life. Charles’ pieces will invite the audience to reflect on their own human relationships\, experiences\, and emotions. \nJoy Kreves is a mixed-media and sculpture artist whose work explores the intersections of language\, psychology\, and the natural environment. Born in Illinois\, she earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in art from Illinois State University. After moving to New York City\, Kreves exhibited her work in various underground shows and contributed sculptural stage sets for gallery performances. She later established an art studio and gallery in Frenchtown\, New Jersey\, where she showcased works by emerging artists. Her art\, deeply influenced by eco-philosophers like Thomas Berry and Dr. Glenn Albrecht\, often addresses environmental themes to create tactile experiences that challenge viewers’ perceptions. Kreves has exhibited extensively in the tri-state area\, including venues like The Hunterdon Museum of Art and The Monmouth Museum. Currently\, she continues her practice from her studio in Ewing\, New Jersey\, remaining an active figure in the regional art community. \nBarbara Morcerf plays with the natural light of the colorful landscapes within her oil paintings. Starting her obsession with oils at the age of 12\, she began to explore beyond the limits of plein air painting\, working in front of her greatest muse\, Nature. She lived many years in between Italy and Manhattan\, New York\, where she found her space of tranquility and peace with still life paintings of natural landscapes\, house scenes\, and bodies of water. During the winter seasons\, she spends time painting still life and figurative paintings. Barbara has been in several art shows\, including her solo show at Chant Gallery in Lords Valley\, Pennsylvania\, and numerous group shows\, such as Shadows and Light 2021 with Wayne County Arts Council Gallery. Barbara currently lives in northeastern Pennsylvania and continues to study at the Art Students League of New York\, painting with her whole heart and soul for natural beauty. \nAngie Redmond is a Chicago-based oil painter and art instructor whose work explores the emotional complexity and beauty of the human experience. Through vibrant\, expressive brushwork and portraiture\, she captures intimate moments that reflect joy\, peace\, and connection\, often inspired by friends\, family\, and members of her community. Blending realism with expressionism\, her paintings are grounded in the tradition of Black Figuration\, while intentionally resisting marginalizing narratives\, focusing instead on the personal\, emotional presence of her subjects. Redmond holds advanced degrees in painting and digital art and has exhibited nationally in a wide range of museums\, galleries\, and cultural institutions\, including Agora Gallery (New York)\, ARC Gallery (Chicago)\, and the Museum of Science and Industry’s Black Creativity exhibition—where she won Best in Show in 2020. In addition to her studio practice\, Redmond has been invited to speak and present her work on platforms such as WGHC 98.3 FM\, Cantv Talk Show\, and at events including the Harlem Fine Arts Show and South Central Community Center. Currently teaching at Harper College in Palatine\, Illinois\, Redmond continues to use oil paint as a transformative medium—one that invites viewers to reflect on their own experiences and the shared emotional threads that connect us all. \nZach Mellman-Carsey is a visual artist based in Lancaster\, Pennsylvania\, who utilizes his jewelry techniques and three-dimensional expertise to create captivating\, conceptual sculptures and jewelry. He received his bachelor’s degree at Bowling Green State University in Ohio with an emphasis in Three-Dimensional studies in 2015 and consecutively earned his master’s in Jewelry\, Sculpture\, Computer-Aided Desig\,n and Manufacturing in 2018 from Indiana University in Bloomington\, Indiana. His work explores the notions of wealth and power in society and blends surreal and conceptual ideas of resilience\, grief\, and loss. In the form of stones and metal work\, Zach recontextualizes the narrative of offering to the dead by creating small pieces of sculptural art that represent not only his identity and the state of mourning but also the relationship between digital fabrication and advancements in art. He has been in several art shows since 2017\, including Anamnesis 2025 group exhibition at the Inliquid Gallery in Philadelphia\, Pennsylvania. Within an increasingly technologically advancing world\, Zach encapsulates his work into a fascinating viewpoint on social classes and technology as an aspect of wealth. \nD’nae Harrison is a multi-award-winning interdisciplinary artist (and musician) based in Philadelphia\, Pennsylvania. Having graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 2014 from The Pennsylvania State University\, Harrison’s work spans visual art\, music\, and social commentary\, often exploring themes of identity\, empowerment\, and justice. Her work has been recognized in various prestigious platforms\, including public commissions\, exhibitions in New York\, and coverage in major media outlets. For example\, in 2020\, her painting Shaded Oppression received the MOZAIK Philanthropy Future Art Award and honorarium; as well as\, in the same year\, her mural Save the Date in Philadelphia’s LOVE Park gained widespread coverage across public media. Harrison’s art is emotionally charged\, blending bold colors with geometric patterns\, black-and-white contrasts\, with the use of human portraiture. Through her vibrant compositions and expressive use of line\, she addresses both personal and societal narratives\, engaging with topics like self-reflection\, inequality\, and the complexities of American culture. She aims to inspire those who feel marginalized to embrace self-love\, trust their vision\, and use their voices to challenge injustice. \nManuel Monge is a realist oil painter who takes the most mundane moments of everyday life and reshapes them with emotional depth. Born in Lima\, Peru\, his father was an architect\, while his mother was a ceramist. Although he came from an artistic background\, art was not his first career choice. Instead\, he pursued engineering while keeping painting as a mere hobby. Once the COVID-19 pandemic hit\, painting went from a simple hobby to a more serious profession. His paintings are a reflection of his personal journeys around the world\, in addition to American suburbia. Rather than creating a mimesis of what is in front of him\, he evokes the more pensive moments of life through feelings of nostalgia and connection. This distinct approach acts as a visual documentation of how individualized experiences can affect human perception. Monge seeks to express the beauty that lies within everyday occurrences that can easily be overlooked by viewers. His paintings elicit a welcoming and pleasant tenor without being muddled by a grandiose context to justify why certain subjects are depicted in such a way. Currently\, Monge is attending the Academy of Art University in San Francisco pursuing his Master of Fine Arts\, while maintaining a full-time career in human resources for a non-profit organization based within the city. \nRena Segal is an oil-based artist recreating the world in her unique visual language. A New Jersey-born native and daughter of the late artist and sculptor George Segal\, she takes familiar objects and surroundings and transforms them into their most distinctive colors\, textures\, and shapes. Segal has been surrounded by art as far back as holding a crayon during childhood. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Montclair University\, NJ\, in 1975\, followed by a Master of Fine Arts from Rutgers University in 1977. Segal has since developed her skills\, enriching herself in creating an intimate space between her and her subject matter. The mediums she specializes in are oil painting\, pastels\, and oil sticks. Concentrating on landscapes and still life artwork\, Segal takes the viewer on an introspective journey through her expressive\, imaginative compositions based on her perceptions. Working with photos of a lake near her childhood home\, Segal’s landscapes are influenced by the flux of time and weather\, coupled with her interpretation of the seasonal colors of nature. Meanwhile\, her still life pieces are arranged in a way that creates an enigmatic\, yet striking appearance where only the colors and shapes remain. \nSarah Yuster is an oil painter and illustrator devoted to unveiling the poetic within the prosaic. Yuster earned her B.F.A graduate from the School of Visual Arts in New York City\, and began oil painting as a pre-teen\, drawn to the medium’s capacity to reinvigorate ideas\, narratives\, and experiences through the two-dimensional. Yuster works primarily in oil across wood\, canvas\, board\, and medium-density fiberboard\, also incorporating charcoal and conté crayon into her portraiture and landscapes. Her subject matter ranges from intimate portraits to liminal urban spaces where stillness and emotional depth take center stage. Yuster’s creative curiosities and expressions are not limited to oil\, charcoal\, and crayon. Her practice is further developed through her parallel work as a filmmaker exploring environmental stewardship\, social bias\, and immigration policy. Moreover\, studying with the Greek Language Center for five years and the Italian Culture Institute for two years\, Yuster is also a lifelong learner with an insatiable curiosity that feeds her interdisciplinary practice. Across all media\, Yuster approaches her work as visual reportage – an homage to place\, people\, and the persistent beauty of the everyday.

The featured artworks explore the variety of artistic photography capturing the many ways a narrative can be told\, through texture\, nature\, and observation of human activity. Each piece reflects the artist’s unique approach to these themes\, with some works echoing the intricate flows and textures of nature\, while others explore the lines between the known and the unknown describing the complexity of storytelling.  \nAbout the New Brunswick Salon Initiative: \nAlfa Art Gallery is a non-profit organization devoted to the discovery\, growth\, and support of emerging and established artists within the art community. Since its establishment\, Alfa Art has conducted multiple shows featuring local\, national\, and international artists and various materials including oil color\, watercolor\, mixed media\, sculptures\, photography\, crafts and glass works. His series “Relegated: a Series of Found Abstractions” distills meaning from neglected materials as subjects\, inviting viewers to explore subtle emotional connections within his work.    \nDavid DesRochers is a New Jersey-based photographer known for his captivating nature photography that transforms landscapes and wildlife into striking visual narratives. His collections\, including American White Pelican and Alaskan Iceberg\, highlight his ability to merge the grandeur of nature with delicate details. DesRocher is a member of the North American Nature Photography Association\, and his work has been featured in prominent exhibitions and recognized in prestigious international photography competitions.  \nEdward Volpe is a passionate photographer who has spent 18 years exploring the beauty of colors and spontaneous moments through his lens. Specializing in vibrant landscapes and dynamic action shots\, his work captures the authenticity of unplanned moments. Volpe’s photography offers fresh perspectives on familiar scenes\, drawing inspiration from the world around him and consistently experimenting with new techniques. He invites viewers to experience the emotions embedded in every frame and see the world in a new light.   \nJane Soodalter is a self-taught photographic artist who captures the hidden beauty of everyday objects through her macro lens. She transitioned from a career in pediatric occupational therapy to focus on her art full-time. Her work has been exhibited and published both in the United States and abroad\, inviting viewers to discover new narratives in the ordinary.  \nJessica Margo\, a fine art photographer from Belmar\, NJ\, rediscovered her passion for photography after a successful media career. Her work has been exhibited in various galleries across New Jersey and Philadelphia\, earning recognition in national and international competitions. Through her camera lens\, she captures the hidden beauty of everyday objects\, transforming them into imaginative new forms. Her images invite viewers to see beauty in nature\, exploring the dynamic movement of the ocean in a close-up view.    \nKay Kenny is an artist who specializes in rural nighttime photography. Based in New Jersey\, her work carries dreamlike qualities through the light and color of her compositions. Alongside creating art\, Kenny teaches photography at New York University\, and has curated several exhibitions of her own. She is also a member of local art committees in the area as a way to further participate within her community.  \nNeil Kohl is a documentary photographer based in Philadelphia. Recently\, he has focused his skills on social justice initiatives. His work has been featured in solo and group exhibitions throughout the US\, while also being a part of various publications\, workshops\, and festivals. His photographs serve as powerful visual narratives\, capturing moments that provoke thought and inspire dialogue.  \nPete Aldrich is a fine art photographer from New Jersey with a BFA in Communication Art from Pratt Institute. Since 2005\, he has showcased his work in solo and group exhibitions. His vibrant photographs capture the unique infrastructure and spirit of northern New Jersey’s urban areas\, highlighting their bold colors and quirky character.  \nRocio De Alba’s latest photographic series captures the strength and resilience of women who have reclaimed their lives after long-term addiction. Through intimate portraits of women with over a decade of sobriety\, de Alba shifts the narrative away from stereotypical depictions of addiction\, offering a powerful celebration of recovery. Her work not only challenges societal perceptions but also offers hope\, encouraging women to break the cycle of addiction and embrace empowerment.  \nNote: Rocio De Alba’s artwork work will only be featured in our Virtual Exhibition\, Thursday January 23rd.  \nSuzette Dushi is a Turkish-born New York and Long Island based photographer whose work has been featured and collected in the US and abroad\, and whose work has been published many times over. Dushi has a wide range of photographic projects and elements ranging from architecture\, nature\, and portraiture but always with profound emotional meaning.    \nTsveta Ubcheva is a Bulgarian based photographer and artist. She attended multiple photography schools and has continued her education at Ivaylo Stoyanov’s Conceptual Photography Masterclass in a school of modern photography “Photoconcept” since 2014. Through her education and work in chemical engineering\, she has come to understand the central link between art and provocation to restore harmony between the viewer and the universe.    \nWalter Plotnick’s Surprise Inside series transports viewers into a playful realm where anticipation and nostalgia converge. Using photographic collages of unfolded cardboard boxes\, Plotnick reveals hidden moments within\, as objects and figures emerge from the confines of the boxes. With a warm sepia wash and a sense of dynamic energy\, his works evoke the joy and excitement of childhood surprises\, capturing moments of discovery that are both whimsical and visually striking.

To name a few\, Alaiyo’s clients include the New York Times Magazine\, Harcourt Brace\, McGraw-Hill\, and 20/20. \nCathleen McCoy Bristol is a former instructor at the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Art\, the Junior Museum of the Newark Museum\, Essex County Park Commission\, Arts Unbound \,Senior Studio and Trinity Presbyterian Church Summer Program. She has freelanced as a fashion illustrator but her passion is as a painter\, focusing mostly on portraits and  figure work but also paints landscapes\, still lifes and animals. \nCheryl Gross masterfully combines abstract and realistic elements to create impactful socio-political narratives. Her art delves into childhood fantasies while addressing gender and societal roles\, particularly in male-dominated professions. The featured artworks explore the fluidity of watercolor and mixed media\, capturing the interplay between the natural world and personal introspection. This exhibition promises to engage viewers with its dynamic blend of technique\, narrative\, and emotion\, offering a fresh perspective on how art can both shape and be shaped by the world around us. \n  \nTo attend the virtual event\, please see the link at the bottom of this page.  \n  \n2024 NBAS Featured Artists in Watercolor and Mixed Media: \nAlaiyo Bradshaw is a visual journalist who works in drypoint and watercolor. She is also a College Professor at Parsons School of Design. Her conceptual illustrations have been published in magazines\, children’s books\, posters\, book jackets\, murals and more. To name a few\, Alaiyo’s clients include the New York Times Magazine\, Harcourt Brace\, McGraw-Hill\, and 20/20. \nCathleen McCoy Bristol is a former instructor at the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Art\, the Junior Museum of the Newark Museum\, Essex County Park Commission\, Arts Unbound \,Senior Studio and Trinity Presbyterian Church Summer Program. She has freelanced as a fashion illustrator but her passion is as a painter\, focusing mostly on portraits and  figure work but also paints landscapes\, still lifes and animals. \nCheryl Gross masterfully combines abstract and realistic elements to create impactful socio-political narratives. Her art delves into childhood fantasies while addressing gender and societal roles\, particularly in male-dominated professions. Color and Texture: Anthologies of Artistry brings together an eclectic mix of artists whose works explore the intricate interplay of vibrant color and rich texture\, inviting viewers on a journey through diverse artistic landscapes. Brought to life through spontaneous mark-making and richly layered texture\, vibrant mixed media paintings that dive deep into the complexities of human emotion are shown in this event. \nArtists explore similar themes of identity and tradition with paint\, though an interrogation of heritage contrasting the stoicism solitary portraiture. Natural and cultural elements are prominently highlighted with bold colors utilizing fabric as sculpture. The juxtaposition of organic and structural forms is continued in nature-inspired collages and works with wire sculpture. Further abstract expressionistic explorations are found in vibrant graffiti aesthetics and dynamic encaustic pattern making. \nColor and Texture: Anthologies of Artistry offers a visual meditation on collective consciousness. Works featuring layers of handmade papers\, drawings\, and natural elements reflect the transformation and rejuvenation found in nature\, encouraging deeper exploration of our environment at large. The essence of color and texture invites viewers to see familiar elements in new and thought-provoking ways through diverse artistic landscapes and themes of humanity\, place\, and emotion. \nAbout New Brunswick Art Salon \nAlfa Art Gallery utilizes New Brunswick Art Salons (NBAS) to unify the local art community and beyond. Since starting the program in 2010 Alfa Art Gallery has made a point to include a salon dedicated to showcasing oil\, watercolor\, photography and mixed media artworks. Over the years\, the NBAS has not only exhibited works from both established and emerging artists but has also made fruitful connections locally and internationally through its successful programs. Within this non-profit organization\, Alfa Art Gallery maintains its mission to uplift artists by providing an open and innovative environment. \nAbout Alfa Art Gallery \nAlfa Art Gallery is a non-profit organization devoted to the discovery\, growth\, and support of emerging and established artists within the art community. Since its establishment\, Alfa Art has conducted multiple shows featuring local\, national\, and international artists and various materials including oil color\, watercolor\, mixed media\, sculptures\, photography\, crafts and glass works. As an open art studio – gallery\, Alfa’s exhibiting artists are welcomed to demonstrate their creative process in the space provided\, while collectors and visitors are capable to learn and follow artists’ techniques\, styles\, and motivations. \n2024 NBAS Featured Artists in Oil\, Sculpture\, and Mixed Media: \nRitu Bajaj\, also known as RitzB\, is a New Jersey-based artist specializing in contemporary realism. After starting her artistic journey in college and receiving oil painting training in India\, she honed her skills even further by studying after a master in the United States. Baja’s extensive training is apparent in her tight technical pieces\, as her paintings display a high level of detail and accuracy. Her pieces\, primarily in oil\, are often inspired by nature\, inviting viewers to see beauty in small moments and appreciate daily life. Baja has participated in several showcases and juried exhibitions and has done commissioned work for private collectors. \nJosephine Barreiro\, also known as J131\, is a mixed media and street artist based in Newark\, New Jersey. Her colorful paintings use acrylic\, oil stick\, and spray paint to feature stylized humans and animals against vibrant backgrounds. The foreground and background are often distinguished through a contrast in color or\, in the case of her black-and-white work\, a variation in pattern and texture. Barreiro’s paintings combine natural\, animalistic subject matter with the chaos and vitality of street art. Her work is infused with emotion\, utilizing distinct lines and bold colors that reflect her Spanish heritage and urban upbringing. Although they are still images\, the vibrancy of her pieces creates an incredible sense of movement and energy\, contributing to her themes of spirituality\, anxiety\, and transformation. Barreiro’s work has been featured in an NYC-ARTS segment on PBS and exhibited in various galleries throughout the United States. \nRitaMarie Cimni is a fine artist based in Delaware. Through her work\, she uses common experiences to connect to the viewer’s collective consciousness. Her works for this exhibit\, including Yet Spring\, Vernal\, and Magnificent Beings\, are intertwined with her meditation practices\, which can be found on her blog\, where she holds meditation groups and writes about art and spirituality. Her radiant paintings\, informed by daily meditation practices\, investigate links between sight and interior vision. Cimini was the President of Studio Montclair\, a nonprofit visual arts organization\, and holds an M.F.A. in painting and sculpture from Bennington College. Her work is held in private collections in the United States and abroad\, as well as in the public collections of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and the MC Hotel. \nKat Collins is an acclaimed abstract artist based in Easton\, Pennsylvania\, known for her vibrant\, emotionally charged mixed-media paintings. With a B.F.A. from Mount Vernon Nazarene University\, she has developed a distinctive style characterized by spontaneous mark-making\, layered textures\, and a rich palette. Utilizing diverse materials such as ink\, collage\, graphite\, oil pastel\, acrylic paint\, and charcoal\, Collins captures the complexity of human emotion through intricate layers and textures. Inspired by artists like Willem de Kooning and Jean-Michel Basquiat\, she aims to evoke profound emotional responses\, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in the present moment and reflect on the shared human experience. Her work has been featured in esteemed venues across Pennsylvania\, New Jersey\, and North Carolina and has been represented by Connexions Gallery since 2022. \nJane Dell is a contemporary American artist and painter who combines imagery and inventive abstract forms in her free-flowing\, colorful\, surreal landscapes and figurative collage paintings. Dell holds a B.F.A. in painting and printmaking from Pratt Institute. Furthermore\, she studied textile design and fabric arts at Parsons School of Design and graphic design\, as well as illustration and printmaking at The School of Visual Arts N.Y.C. Her work is included in many private collections in New York\, New Jersey\, Switzerland\, and Matera\, Italy. Her mixed-media works are created with acrylic and collage on canvas\, watercolor\, ink\, and photography. Dell’s experimental paintings are influenced by the unpredictability of life\, exploring the ever-shifting boundaries between chaos and order in nature. Her process begins with a loose idea guided through evolution by materials\, and her gestural brushwork blends organic shapes with geometric worlds. \nKiran Dhaliwal is a New Jersey-based artist whose work focuses on her experiences living in rural India. Dhaliwal was born in India and raised in the United States\, moving back and forth between the two countries as she grew up. Art has always been a big part of Dhaliwal’s life\, but it was not until 2016 that she began experimenting with oil paint\, where she used the medium to depict landscapes and everyday life scenes in India. Her oil paintings explore the lives of ordinary women in India\, depicting scenes of human connection and highlighting the culture of her birthplace. Paying homage to her past and exploring the culture of her birthplace. Dhaliwal’s work has been exhibited across the United States\, with notable shows in New York City\, Chicago\, and Washington\, D.C. \nCarmelita Diaz Kamin completed her Bachelor’s Degree in Visual Arts from the University of Guanajuato\, a postgraduate degree in Art Therapy from the University of Barcelona\, and a Master’s Degree in Visual Arts from the State University of New York. Diaz has participated in various individual and group exhibitions in Mexico\, the United States\, and Spain\, including Parameter of Lumen Art at the Carrillo Gil Musem\, Artefacts at the Equity Gallery in Manhattan\, and Art as Social Action at the University of Barcelona. Her work is characterized by the use of oil\, Chinese ink\, ceramics\, natural pigments\, and other materials that have always been covered by historical links with the stories immersed in the landscapes and living spaces. Through her multifaceted practice\, Diaz explores profound cultural history and personal self-exploration. \nDan Finaldi grew up in an immigrant home in Rochester\, New York surrounded by a diverse\, working-class community. From an early age\, his artistic passion was nurtured by a local commercial printer who provided him with paper for his sketches. After initial studies at a local community college\, he transferred to SUNY New Paltz\, where he committed to figurative painting despite the dominance of Abstract Expressionism. He later earned his MFA at Brooklyn College\, studying under renowned artists like Lois Dodd. Now residing in Highland Park\, New Jersey\, Finaldi’s work focuses on the narrative power of figuration\, particularly through scenes of diverse groups of people at play in public parks. His paintings aim to counter societal animosity by depicting harmonious interactions in communal spaces\, highlighting the potential for peaceful coexistence within the human family. \nShoshana Kertesz was born and raised in Budapest\, Hungary\, and currently resides in Nutley\, New Jersey. Her work is renowned for portraiture\, often painting realism utilizing oil and pencil-based mediums. Kertez’s portraiture renders an individual’s innermost world into distinct philosophical moods figuratively with subtle brushwork and carefully chosen color schemes. Through themes as self-examination conveyed through dramatic\, narrative visual means\, her artwork investigates what it means to be human and have an identity. She delves into themes of introspection and solitude using an expressive lyrical approach aiming to capture the essence in artists\, dancers\, and writers\, poets\, and musicians. While her paintings may seem light-hearted and whimsical\, viewing them provides a deep bond with our humanity. Her work is both evocative and introspective and has the ability to both capture the essence of its subjects and explore important and complex themes. \nSandra Koberlein is a media and abstract artist whose works are composed of intriguing layers. Her works include handmade papers\, original drawings\, photos\, cyanotype prints\, and ephemera. She specializes in encaustic paintings\, which captives her for their environmentally friend material\, rich history\, and creative challenges it gives her. Her work captures natural worlds\, transforming magical rejuvenations and providing a sense of place. Furthermore\, Koberlein is a certified encaustic instructor with R&F Handmade Paints and teaches through her workshops at local art centers and in her Pennsville\, NJ studio. She received an A.A. from The Art Institute\, a B.A. in Art\, and a B.A. in Education from Rowan\, earning the Gates Award for Excellence. Born in Texas\, raised in California\, and having resided in Maryland\, New York\, and now New Jersey\, Lutsko holds an M.F.A. in Painting from Brooklyn College\, C.U.N.Y.\, and a B.A. in Fine Arts (Painting) from U.C.L.A. He has instructed at various art institutions\, including the Maryland Institute College of Art and the Visual Art Center of New Jersey. His oil-based paintings delve into the American cultural landscape\, exploring elements etched into the collective consciousness. Lutsko examines the dichotomy of motor vehicles\, highways\, and roads—among other American staples—as symbols of both freedom and mundane daily routines. His paintings encourage spectators to view these everyday elements in a new light. \nLisa Marseglia-Moran is a distinguished Northern New Jersey artist and educator with a BFA from Boston College and a teaching certification from William Paterson College. With a 30-year journey teaching art in New Jersey\, her retirement in 2021 redirected her focus towards art making and creativity. Her dedication to creating unique mixed-media weavings earned her recognition and awards for her work in the metropolitan area. Her works\, specializing in oil on canvas and works on paper\, effortlessly intertwine artistry\, harmony\, and the natural world – delving into the profound beauty of nature and the inherent interconnectedness of life. Her abstract expressionist pieces\, crafted across various mediums including oils\, watercolor\, pen and ink\, and mixed media\, undergo a distinctive process: separate paintings and drawings are meticulously deconstructed and interwoven\, embodying her core themes of energy\, movement\, and unity. Each creation is a metaphor for Lak’Ech – the profound notion that we are all intricately linked. \nKirk Maynard is originally from Brooklyn\, New York\, utilizes art to highlight the political undercurrents of American identity and culture. His initial love of art came from comics and matured in high school when he worked as an art teaching assistant. His artistic expression further developed in graduate school when he began to focus more on politics in his work; His work evolved beyond simply art for aesthetic reasons\, but rather to highlight issues Maynard had already been thinking about. Maynard primarily uses oil paint and oil pastels\, focusing on portraiture\, where he uses composition\, juxtaposition\, and the profile angle to explore how identity and politics intersect. Maynard’s recent series focuses on contemporary society’s marginalization of black people\, the relationship between people of the African and Caribbean diaspora\, and the so-called American Dream. Now residing in New Jersey\, Maynard works not only as an artist but as an educator. \nRosalind Nzinga is a mixed-media artist dedicated to storytelling through textures\, textiles\, and paper. Nzinga studied drawing and painting at Herron School of Art and Design at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis and earned a B.F.A. from California State University\, Long Beach. Initially creating papier-mâché sculptures and assemblages\, Nzinga developed a profound appreciation for paper’s versatility. Such has led her to creating mixed media quilts\, paintings\, collages\, and installations using vintage lace and handmade upcycled paper. Furthermore\, Nzinga embraces repurposing materials resulting from being inspired by her grandmother’s recycling practice. Her art features abstract and interpretive narratives deeply influenced by her American and African roots. Her artwork showcases iconography and textiles from the African diaspora displayed in a poetic and transcendental manner. \nKeith J. Vogrin is a fine artist and neo-romantic oil painter residing in Bethlehem Township\, Pennsylvania. Vogrin holds a B.F.A. in Drawing and Painting from Pennsylvania State University. As an avid outdoorsman\, Vogrin’s passion for fishing\, camping\, and hiking profoundly influences his art. He maintains a studio in his Bethlehem home\, where he continues to create and exhibit award-winning pieces in juried shows across Pennsylvania\, New Jersey\, New York\, and Maryland. Vogrin views himself as a perpetual art student\, constantly seeking new challenges and inspiration. His work primarily focuses on nature and architecture\, capturing scenes from the Lehigh Valley\, the East Coast\, and the Pocono Mountains. Vogrin’s paintings are known for their dramatic contrasts of light and dark\, warm and cool colors\, and textured brush strokes in a controlled looseness style. His compositions often offer unique perspectives\, challenging viewers to see familiar environments in new ways. \nRebecca Welz\, born in California\, spent much of her adult life in New York City. For over 30 years\, she has taught at Pratt Institute. Her artistic career began as a painter before transitioning to working with sanded\, folded sheet acrylic and\, eventually\, steel. Inspired by origami\, Welz’s sculptures evolved from acrylic to her current use of heated and bent steel rods\, embodying the delicate interplay between nature and human influence. Her transition from painting to sculpting with steel reflects a journey toward capturing the essence of natural forms through simple lines. Using heated and bent steel rods\, she creates intricate\, three-dimensional drawings that convey the materials’ lightness and strength. After starting her artistic journey in college and receiving oil painting training in India\, she honed her skills even further by studying after a master in the United States. Baja’s extensive training is apparent in her tight technical pieces\, as her paintings display a high level of detail and accuracy. Her pieces\, primarily in oil\, are often inspired by nature\, inviting viewers to see beauty in small moments and appreciate daily life. Baja has participated in several showcases and juried exhibitions and has done commissioned work for private collectors. \nJosephine Barreiro\, also known as J131\, is a mixed media and street artist based in Newark\, New Jersey. Her colorful paintings use acrylic\, oil stick\, and spray paint to feature stylized humans and animals against vibrant backgrounds. The foreground and background are often distinguished through a contrast in color or\, in the case of her black-and-white work\, a variation in pattern and texture. Barreiro’s paintings combine natural\, animalistic subject matter with the chaos and vitality of street art. Her work is infused with emotion\, utilizing distinct lines and bold colors that reflect her Spanish heritage and urban upbringing. Although they are still images\, the vibrancy of her pieces creates an incredible sense of movement and energy\, contributing to her themes of spirituality\, anxiety\, and transformation. Barreiro’s work has been featured in an NYC-ARTS segment on PBS and exhibited in various galleries throughout the United States. \nRitaMarie Cimni is a fine artist based in Delaware. Through her work\, she uses common experiences to connect to the viewer’s collective consciousness. Her works for this exhibit\, including Yet Spring\, Vernal\, and Magnificent Beings\, are intertwined with her meditation practices\, which can be found on her blog\, where she holds meditation groups and writes about art and spirituality. Her radiant paintings\, informed by daily meditation practices\, investigate links between sight and interior vision. Cimini was the President of Studio Montclair\, a nonprofit visual arts organization\, and holds an M.F.A. in painting and sculpture from Bennington College. Her work is held in private collections in the United States and abroad\, as well as in the public collections of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and the MC Hotel. \nKat Collins is an acclaimed abstract artist based in Easton\, Pennsylvania\, known for her vibrant\, emotionally charged mixed-media paintings. With a B.F.A. from Mount Vernon Nazarene University\, she has developed a distinctive style characterized by spontaneous mark-making\, layered textures\, and a rich palette. Utilizing diverse materials such as ink\, collage\, graphite\, oil pastel\, acrylic paint\, and charcoal\, Collins captures the complexity of human emotion through intricate layers and textures. Inspired by artists like Willem de Kooning and Jean-Michel Basquiat\, she aims to evoke profound emotional responses\, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in the present moment and reflect on the shared human experience. Her work has been featured in esteemed venues across Pennsylvania\, New Jersey\, and North Carolina and has been represented by Connexions Gallery since 2022. \nJane Dell is a contemporary American artist and painter who combines imagery and inventive abstract forms in her free-flowing\, colorful\, surreal landscapes and figurative collage paintings. Dell holds a B.F.A. in painting and printmaking from Pratt Institute. Furthermore\, she studied textile design and fabric arts at Parsons School of Design and graphic design\, as well as illustration and printmaking at The School of Visual Arts N.Y.C. Her work is included in many private collections in New York\, New Jersey\, Switzerland\, and Matera\, Italy. Her mixed-media works are created with acrylic and collage on canvas\, watercolor\, ink\, and photography. Dell’s experimental paintings are influenced by the unpredictability of life\, exploring the ever-shifting boundaries between chaos and order in nature. Her process begins with a loose idea guided through evolution by materials\, and her gestural brushwork blends organic shapes with geometric worlds. \nKiran Dhaliwal is a New Jersey-based artist whose work focuses on her experiences living in rural India. Dhaliwal was born in India and raised in the United States\, moving back and forth between the two countries as she grew up. Art has always been a big part of Dhaliwal’s life\, but it was not until 2016 that she began experimenting with oil paint\, where she used the medium to depict landscapes and everyday life scenes in India. Her oil paintings explore the lives of ordinary women in India\, depicting scenes of human connection and highlighting the culture of her birthplace. Paying homage to her past and exploring the culture of her birthplace. Dhaliwal’s work has been exhibited across the United States\, with notable shows in New York City\, Chicago\, and Washington\, D.C. \nCarmelita Diaz Kamin completed her Bachelor’s Degree in Visual Arts from the University of Guanajuato\, a postgraduate degree in Art Therapy from the University of Barcelona\, and a Master’s Degree in Visual Arts from the State University of New York. Diaz has participated in various individual and group exhibitions in Mexico\, the United States\, and Spain\, including Parameter of Lumen Art at the Carrillo Gil Musem\, Artefacts at the Equity Gallery in Manhattan\, and Art as Social Action at the University of Barcelona. Her work is characterized by the use of oil\, Chinese ink\, ceramics\, natural pigments\, and other materials that have always been covered by historical links with the stories immersed in the landscapes and living spaces. Through her multifaceted practice\, Diaz explores profound cultural history and personal self-exploration. \nDan Finaldi grew up in an immigrant home in Rochester\, New York surrounded by a diverse\, working-class community. From an early age\, his artistic passion was nurtured by a local commercial printer who provided him with paper for his sketches. After initial studies at a local community college\, he transferred to SUNY New Paltz\, where he committed to figurative painting despite the dominance of Abstract Expressionism. He later earned his MFA at Brooklyn College\, studying under renowned artists like Lois Dodd. Now residing in Highland Park\, New Jersey\, Finaldi’s work focuses on the narrative power of figuration\, particularly through scenes of diverse groups of people at play in public parks. His paintings aim to counter societal animosity by depicting harmonious interactions in communal spaces\, highlighting the potential for peaceful coexistence within the human family. \nShoshana Kertesz was born and raised in Budapest\, Hungary\, and currently resides in Nutley\, New Jersey. Her work is renowned for portraiture\, often painting realism utilizing oil and pencil-based mediums. Kertez’s portraiture renders an individual’s innermost world into distinct philosophical moods figuratively with subtle brushwork and carefully chosen color schemes. Through themes as self-examination conveyed through dramatic\, narrative visual means\, her artwork investigates what it means to be human and have an identity. Her work is both evocative and introspective and has the ability to both capture the essence of its subjects and explore important and complex themes. \nSandra Koberlein is a media and abstract artist whose works are composed of intriguing layers. Her works include handmade papers\, original drawings\, photos\, cyanotype prints\, and ephemera. She specializes in encaustic paintings\, which captives her for their environmentally friend material\, rich history\, and creative challenges it gives her. Her work captures natural worlds\, transforming magical rejuvenations and providing a sense of place. Furthermore\, Koberlein is a certified encaustic instructor with R&F Handmade Paints and teaches through her workshops at local art centers and in her Pennsville\, NJ studio. She received an A.A. from The Art Institute\, a B.A. in Art\, and a B.A. in Education from Rowan\, earning the Gates Award for Excellence. Born in Texas\, raised in California\, and having resided in Maryland\, New York\, and now New Jersey\, Lutsko holds an M.F.A. in Painting from Brooklyn College\, C.U.N.Y.\, and a B.A. in Fine Arts (Painting) from U.C.L.A. He has instructed at various art institutions\, including the Maryland Institute College of Art and the Visual Art Center of New Jersey. His oil-based paintings delve into the American cultural landscape\, exploring elements etched into the collective consciousness. Lutsko examines the dichotomy of motor vehicles\, highways\, and roads—among other American staples—as symbols of both freedom and mundane daily routines. His paintings encourage spectators to view these everyday elements in a new light. \nLisa Marseglia-Moran is a distinguished Northern New Jersey artist and educator with a BFA from Boston College and a teaching certification from William Paterson College. With a 30-year journey teaching art in New Jersey\, her retirement in 2021 redirected her focus towards art making and creativity. Her dedication to creating unique mixed-media weavings earned her recognition and awards for her work in the metropolitan area. Her works\, specializing in oil on canvas and works on paper\, effortlessly intertwine artistry\, harmony\, and the natural world – delving into the profound beauty of nature and the inherent interconnectedness of life. Her abstract expressionist pieces\, crafted across various mediums including oils\, watercolor\, pen and ink\, and mixed media\, undergo a distinctive process: separate paintings and drawings are meticulously deconstructed and interwoven\, embodying her core themes of energy\, movement\, and unity. Each creation is a metaphor for Lak’Ech – the profound notion that we are all intricately linked. \nKirk Maynard is originally from Brooklyn\, New York\, utilizes art to highlight the political undercurrents of American identity and culture. His initial love of art came from comics and matured in high school when he worked as an art teaching assistant. His artistic expression further developed in graduate school when he began to focus more on politics in his work; His work evolved beyond simply art for aesthetic reasons\, but rather to highlight issues Maynard had already been thinking about. Maynard primarily uses oil paint and oil pastels\, focusing on portraiture\, where he uses composition\, juxtaposition\, and the profile angle to explore how identity and politics intersect. Maynard’s recent series focuses on contemporary society’s marginalization of black people\, the relationship between people of the African and Caribbean diaspora\, and the so-called American Dream. Now residing in New Jersey\, Maynard works not only as an artist but as an educator. \nRosalind Nzinga is a mixed-media artist dedicated to storytelling through textures\, textiles\, and paper. Nzinga studied drawing and painting at Herron School of Art and Design at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis and earned a B.F.A. from California State University\, Long Beach. Initially creating papier-mâché sculptures and assemblages\, Nzinga developed a profound appreciation for paper’s versatility. Such has led her to creating mixed media quilts\, paintings\, collages\, and installations using vintage lace and handmade upcycled paper. Furthermore\, Nzinga embraces repurposing materials resulting from being inspired by her grandmother’s recycling practice. Her art features abstract and interpretive narratives deeply influenced by her American and African roots. Her artwork showcases iconography and textiles from the African diaspora displayed in a poetic and transcendental manner. \nKeith J. Vogrin is a fine artist and neo-romantic oil painter residing in Bethlehem Township\, Pennsylvania. Vogrin holds a B.F.A. in Drawing and Painting from Pennsylvania State University. As an avid outdoorsman\, Vogrin’s passion for fishing\, camping\, and hiking profoundly influences his art. He maintains a studio in his Bethlehem home\, where he continues to create and exhibit award-winning pieces in juried shows across Pennsylvania\, New Jersey\, New York\, and Maryland. Vogrin views himself as a perpetual art student\, constantly seeking new challenges and inspiration. His work primarily focuses on nature and architecture\, capturing scenes from the Lehigh Valley\, the East Coast\, and the Pocono Mountains. Vogrin’s paintings are known for their dramatic contrasts of light and dark\, warm and cool colors\, and textured brush strokes in a controlled looseness style. His compositions often offer unique perspectives\, challenging viewers to see familiar environments in new ways. \nRebecca Welz\, born in California\, spent much of her adult life in New York City. For over 30 years\, she has taught at Pratt Institute. Her artistic career began as a painter before transitioning to working with sanded\, folded sheet acrylic and\, eventually\, steel. Inspired by origami\, Welz’s sculptures evolved from acrylic to her current use of heated and bent steel rods\, embodying the delicate interplay between nature and human influence. This exhibition\, showing over three months\, showcases a myriad of approaches to photography.  In this exhibition powerful visual storytelling\, stunning impressions\, as well as unique techniques are all displayed. “Refracted: Shade and Light”\, features unique artists like Jean-Paul Picard’s hand bent aluminum prints that bring a third dimension to photography\, Juan Giraldo’s poignant storytelling\, and Anita Sagastegui’s remarkable perspective of flora and fauna. This exhibition showcases a diverse array of artworks from esteemed artists both native to New Jersey as well as artists living and working within the tri-state area\, and features oil paintings and mixed media works that truly push the boundaries of their media. In these selected abstract and figurative artworks\, each artist presents their own innovative approach to both the traditional medium of oil paint and mixed media art in order to capture visions of the contemporary world.    \n“Beyond the Brush: The Contemporary Imagination” will highlight the work of such talented artists as Suparna Mondal\, whose kaleidoscopically colorful and kinetic abstract works reveal her experiences of the contemporary urban world\, artist Bonnie McGown’s masterful use of oil paint to capture the beauties of the natural world\, as well as artist Christine Seo’s intriguing oil canvases that feature the recurring motif of a horse against colorful abstract backgrounds to express her own unique worldview. DESCRIPTION:Exhibition Duration: September 1\, 2020 – October 23\, 2020  \nOpening Reception: Thursday\, September 16 @ 4:00 pm \nOpening Reception: Saturday\, September 18 @ 4:00 pm \nAlfa Art Gallery invites you to “LATITUDES/LONGITUDES/MERIDIANS\,” a three-person show with Betty Jacobsen\, Yvonne Skaggs and Meredeth Turshen\, featuring representative works from their numerous explorations in oil\, watercolor\, drawing\, collage\, ceramics and mixed media. \nThe three artists have shown their work in a variety of exhibition venues around New York\, New Jersey\, and Pennsylvania since the 1980s. Through the years that Betty\, Yvonne and Meredeth have known\, worked and exhibited together\, they have influenced each other in many subtle ways\, especially with their commitment and dedication to express their feelings and visions artistically.  \n  \nBetty Jacobsen\, an artist and educator\, trained at Syracuse\, NYU and Montclair State University. She taught advanced art classes at Hunterdon Central Regional High School. Her passions are art and nature\, coupled with education. Nature serves as a personal metaphor for the cycles of life. Quietly intimate in size\, her work starts from observations of the outside world and flows from the unconscious. Her small works can stand individually yet create a larger visual statement when viewed together.    \nBetty manipulates clay slabs and assembles them into land/sea forms in this new series of artworks. In her hands\, bowls\, which are a traditional ceramic form\, become interior landscapes\, relating to a personal spiritual journey of the past few years. Linoleum relief blocks are carved\, pressed into clay\, cut out\, and added to the clay forms\, creating movement and rhythm. In ceramics\, the combination of earth and fire equals transformation.     \n  \nJ. Yvonne Skaggs\, an artist who exhibits two- and three-dimensional work in various venues in New York and New Jersey\, studied at the University of Iowa School of Art and Art History. Her varied career includes producing maps and technical drawings and designing and preparing exhibits for small history and art organizations. With traditional artifacts being destroyed around the world by man and nature\, she has been considering what we mean when we preserve objects\, paintings\, and artifacts of all kinds. With the abstracted landscape images shown here\, she thinks about the definition of style and culture and the objects we choose to save to record our time. She uses the technique of collage\, reassembling elements to sculpt\, build and construct images. The papers and fabrics come from many sources – magazines\, newspapers\, photographs and paper and fabric.  \nYvonne creates needlework images from plein-air drawings and paintings\, framing them in painted mats. The work incorporates painting drop cloths\, which provide energetic images of tempest and fury\, and contrast with the stitched serenity of a simple tree\, flower or path in the woods. Aware that the earth is being changed\, reshaped and destroyed\, Yvonne’s artwork illustrates the conflict between the stark beauty of this life and the death struggles of a planet fighting to survive.  \n  \nMeredeth Turshen is an artist\, teacher and writer who lives in Hoboken and taught at Rutgers University in New Brunswick\, NJ\, for more than 25 years. Her art studies began at age ten at the Art Students League in New York and continued\, after majoring in studio art at Oberlin College\, in workshops and residencies at Pratt\, the Printmaking Council of NJ\, the Rutgers Center for Innovative Printmaking\, Vermont Studio Center\, and Moulin à Nef (VCCA France). She exhibits regularly in the New York metropolitan region and with Viridian Gallery in Chelsea. For this exhibition\, she was inspired by the challenge of rendering remembered landscapes in oil and collage. The work is simultaneously representational and non-figurative.    \nMeredeth revisits storied landscapes viewed on her research trips through Africa\, Asia and Europe\, remembering and reimagining the environments that stamped her life. Working in oil paint and paper collage\, she searches for telling details that reveal place\, establish ambience\, and recall the experiences of being an amazed and observant visitor.

Living and working abroad gave her the opportunity to snap photos of ordinary people wherever she went\, accumulating two decades worth of stunning material. Inspired by Henri Carter Bresson and her photography mentor\, Leandre Jackson\, Rahim views photography as fine art\, which she combines with her creative writing. She has a BA from University of Chicago\, JD from Temple Beasley School of Law\, and MFA from Rutgers-Newark University. Along with being a Voices of Our Nation alumni\, Rahim was a PANK Book Contest Finalist for her hybrid memoir and has exhibited her photography throughout the tri-state area. She is a 2020 Artist in Residence at SMUSH Gallery.   \n  \n  \nArik Gorban was eleven years old when he first started processing black-and-white film. Since then\, his abilities have only been honed by his 40+ year career as a fine art photographer\, both in his refined technical skills and through the development of his creative process. He has spent decades experimenting and closing the gap between what is possible with a camera and digital editing\, and what he envisions in his mind’s eye. He puts special focus on the creative\, but does so without neglecting the technical aspects of the photography discipline. The same care goes into his editing process\, which he utilizes to finalize his vision and provide a completed piece.  \n  \n  \n  \nBrad Terhune crafts weird worlds through his collages\, something he has done since childhood. A northern New Jersey-based artist\, he embraces the influences of 20th century Surrealist influence in creating portals into his strange realms\, often imbued with the powerful subjects of politics and social justices. His collages incorporate a plethora of materials\, like historic photographs\, and other disciplines\, like printmaking. His paintings\, meanwhile\, represent a dialogue between creator and canvas\, with Terhune asking himself how and why the image develops as it does; this is the soul of these pieces\, which are ‘about’ exactly what the viewer sees. He majored in Illustration at the School of Visual Arts in the 80’s and obtained a BA in Art Education from Montclair State University. Along with creating new works\, he serves as an art educator for Clark Public Schools and an Instructor at Zimmerli Art Museum’s Summery Art Camp. He frequently exhibits in the New York-New Jersey area and is featured in collections in Japan\, England\, France and elsewhere in the United States.  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nChee Bravo reflects rich and diverse environments inhabited by vibrant and soulful individuals through her portraits. Her background as a printmaker and career as graphic designer informs her creative process\, first putting together digital collages with photography and computer manipulation\, and then transferring the piece onto canvas with acrylics and silk-screening. While her life began in Trinidad and Tobago in the West Indies\, her journey began in the New York subways\, capturing performers in their element. Her interests have only grown\, with a trip to Havana\, Cuba inspiring a series on reflecting people’s cultural\, religious\, and political beliefs. Her current focus lies with the local performers of her hometown\, Trenton\, New Jersey. She holds a BFA in printmaking from Florida International University and numerous awards\, including the Betty Laird Award and Addy Award. Her works can be found publicly in the permanent collections of Trenton City Museum\, Florida International University\, the Brooklyn Art Library\, the Printmaking Center of New Jersey\, as well as featured in exhibitions throughout the tri-state area and abroad.   \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nDanielle Austen is a photographer and an environmentalist trained in the fine arts\, having received her BFA from Cornell University. Additionally\, she attended the master’s program at the Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications with an emphasis in studying photojournalism\, but not before spending 7 years as a graphic designer among a number of other artistic endeavors. Today\, she presents her collection of photographs featuring warm organic imagery that could only be designed by the majesty of the natural world and captured by the steady hand of a seasoned photographer. Devoted to the land and her craft\, Austen focuses on bodies of water. Easily overlooked brooks and streams are transformed into spiritual waterfronts while intertwining their fluidity and ever-fluctuating form to match the possibility of viewer interpretation. Her work is overflowing with reflective and meditative potential.   \n  \n  \nFrederick Ballet has always been enamored with the natural world\, a source of existential fascination and peaceful solitude. While the Brooklyn native initially pursued a medical career as a hand surgeon\, retirement allowed him to renew his passion in photography. In 2018\, he became the first student to earn the Contemporary Practices Photography Certificate from Philadelphia Photo Arts Center and has since had his work displayed at shows\, galleries and businesses\, a long way from snapping pictures of zoo animals with an Olympus camera. Ballet captures images of the beach at various times in the day and year\, balancing realism and abstraction by anchoring viewers to the shore and then inviting them to contemplate the colors and calmness of the ocean. He hopes viewers walk away with the same sentiments that resound in him after gazing upon the natural majesty\, “a meditative sense of beauty\, peace\, and timelessness.”  \n  \n  \nGeorge Mattei captures the beauty of the Jersey Shore through the High Dynamic Range technique\, a process that imitates how the human eye gazes upon a scene. Rather than taking a single exposure\, Mattei sets up a tripod and obtains three to nine exposures at varying light levels and tones\, then combines them into one image. In preserving details that would have otherwise been overlooked\, Mattei elevates everything beautiful about the landscapes and seascapes he photographs\, resulting in an immersive viewing experience. A graduate of the School of Visual Arts\, Mattei creates photography for art and commercial purposes and is currently working at Helen Hayes Rehabilitation Hospital\, using his photography as a mode for wellness and inspiration. His photos are featured for businesses’ promotional materials and at galleries and exhibitions throughout New Jersey.   \n  \n  \nGwyneth Green is an artist who uses the camera and the written word. A published poet with a BA in Fairleigh Dickenson University\, Green participated in ekphrastic collaborations with visual artists. Approaching the synergic nature of the word and the image fascinated her\, her piqued interest encouraging her to wed her poems with her photographs. Her careful use of color and focus mimics imaginative prose as it guides viewers through the scene. She has fifteen poetic publications and has been featured in exhibitions in the mid-Atlantic region as well as virtual ones.  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nHarold Olejarz invites viewers to peer through a kaleidoscope in his circular-constructed pieces. His career began in 3D as a sculptor\, earning a BA from Brooklyn College and MFA from Pratt Institute and participating actively in the Soho cooperative gallery movement. By the 80’s\, he’d adapted his sculptures to be wearable and incorporate performance into his art\, and in the 90’s explored digital imaging to capture the ‘performances’ of objects on a digital scanner. His present work looks beyond the typical rectangular confines of the frame and instead creates circular\, collaged images consisting of repeating\, rotating slices reminiscent of a pinwheel or mandala. This invites viewers to focus on relationships of the images and reveal intricate and delightful patterns. He has participated in solo and group exhibitions and performances throughout the United States\, as well as participated in reviews nationally and internationally.  \n  \n  \n  \nKay Kenny shows silent statues witness societal descent and environmental vulnerability. Currently a photography teacher at New York University and the International Center of Photography in New York City\, Kenny is deeply rooted in the fine art world. Her education includes a BFA from Syracuse University\, MA from Rutgers University\, and MFA from Syracuse University\, while her resume includes work in photography\, painting\, and published critique. Her Stone Goddess series takes Greek and Roman sculptures from the Metropolitan Museum and places them elsewhere in the United States\, acting as avatars of the past watching what humanity’s whims have wrought. Her work has been exhibited in in the Eastern United States and Taiwan\, and\, in 2004\, she co-curated the exhibit “Manifestations: Photographs of Men” at the Southeast Museum of Photography in 2004.   \n  \n  \nLinda Troeller is a renowned and award-winning photographer who has dedicated the majority of her artistic career to personal\, women’s and social issues. Her latest work\, “Personal Opera\,” tackles subjects she has been exploring for most of her career\, such as gender\, humanity\, emotion and aura. She has refined her ability to capture the human body\, arranging the human body to best promote these questions of truth and self. Her portraits dare to delve beneath the surface and face the questions of personhood. There is no subject she will shy away from\, and the confidence is palpable. She is the star of her “Personal Opera.”  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nLothar Troeller’s “Children of the fire” is a series reflecting Troeller’s personal journey through crisis and destiny that is physically formed by not only the elements of the earth but by the conscious mind that guides them. The German American artist and photographer whose exhibition work spans over multiple decades and continents\, now invites us to observe his Children of the Fire with introspective intent. His visually diverse yet equally striking works are simultaneously vibrant and painful. The raw and heartbreaking series is charged with a sense of perseverance in the face of adversity. The scorched surface gives way to new beginnings\, as hardships often do.    \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nMark Chernin uses his photography to evoke an emotional response in his viewers. His love of photography began while he was in college in the 1960’s\, a period of social upheaval in the United States that used photography to demonstrate the political activism and national debate the country was experiencing. As he continued to study art\, he discovered the paintings of the Hudson River School and was moved by the artists abilities to capture the luminous qualities of light\, tonality and saturation. Over the last six decades\, Chernin has been able to study with prominent photographers\, and display his work in national juried fine art photography exhibitions along with several of his own solo exhibitions. Most recently\, Mark won a First Place in his category at the First Annual National Arts Competition at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (2011).  \n  \n  \n  \nMelchi Dompreh’s photographs\, like his poetry\, hope to express his heart’s sentiments and stir up emotions and feelings viewers can empathize with. Dompreh is native to Flushing\, Queens\, New York\, but moved to Edison\, New Jersey in 2004. He graduated from Middlesex Country Vocational and Technical Schools with a focus on Architecture Technology in 2013. He began to take photography seriously in March of 2016\, as a way to visually express what he had written in his poems. By the end of Summer 2017\, Dompreh started to work with film\, and in 2019 his work began to be shared on Instagram. Dompreh is currently working on a transforming his poetic journal\, ’Loud Whispers ‘to film. This work will explore the turbulent years that marked his teenage years and early adulthood\, that many face. He recently was one of five artists awarded the Moment x Willem Verbeeck Grant\, and is developing his own website.  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nMichael Yacovino passed away nearly two decades ago\, but his work is still as powerful as ever. It is able to embody the capabilities of art\, in whichever medium it may present itself\, to evolve and metamorphose in perpetuity. Yavocino received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Mason Gross School of Art in 1986\, and had several dalliances with fashion design.  Yacovino’s work juxtaposes the familiar with the ambiguous\, and presents a commentary on objectification.   \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nTricia Miho is an Argentinian\, self-taught artist who was destined to be an artist from birth. Her family is filled with talented artist and craftsman\, and her grandfather was even an esteemed Italian jewelry designer. She received a formal education in music with a Baccalaureate degree along with a Masters in Law and Social Sciences\, along with received British Royal Academies awards in painting\, watercolor and drawing. Her work was characterized by an inimitable artistic style influenced by the surrealist visions of Giorgio De Chirico\, and the detail-rich cityscapes depicted by Pieter Bruegel. Miho currently resides in the United States\, is regularly featured in exhibitions\, and has been experimenting with photography as a means of manipulating and creating new ideas.  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nAlfa Art Gallery is a non-profit organization devoted to the discovery\, growth\, and support of emerging and established artists within the art community. Since establishment\, Alfa Art has conducted multiple shows featuring local\, national\, and international artists and various materials including oil color\, water color\, mixed media\, sculptures\, photography\, crafts and glass works. As an open art studio – gallery\, Alfa’s exhibiting artists are welcomed to demonstrate their creative process in the space provided\, while collectors and visitors are capable to learn and follow the artists’ technique\, style and motivations. DESCRIPTION:This Winter\, Alfa Art Gallery is hosting the New Brunswick Art Salon’s All-Media Exhibition. Several different mediums will be on display\, such as painting\, photography\, drawing\, and sculpture.   \nAs per our new normal as a nation\, the Alfa Art Gallery is also proud to include a virtual version of our exhibition. This fully interactive online experience will allow visitors to view and be involved with the works just as they would in person at the gallery. International artists will be displayed exclusively in the virtual version of the exhibition\, so be sure not to miss it! We apologize for this sudden change and we hope you are all staying safe in these times. \nVirtual Opening Reception: Thursday\, December 3rd\, 2020 @ 6:00 PM \nFeatured Artists:\n \nJamie Greenfield works in this exhibition reflect an ecosystem that encompasses nature\, cosmology\, and the connection between the inner mind and the outer natural world. The objects in her works seem to have a tenuous relation to one another\, yet they are anchored in a structured space. Some of these relations are provided to the viewer while others are more ambiguous\, and may be the result of memory or longing. Greenfield draws upon personal history in combination with observation of light and form\, and often does not have a preconceived plan for a work\, allowing the piece to evolve and process as it is created. She views the moth as a potent metaphor: beautiful and dangerous\, the brevity of its life coupled with its incessant movement towards the light appears to reflect the human existential dilemma.  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nOgunlesi Paul is a graduate of the prestigious Yaba College of Technology in Lagos\, Nigeria\, where he obtained a National Diploma in General Art (majoring in Painting). He worked as an IT student at Defactori Art Studio under Akintunde O. John. He has participated in numerous art workshops\, symposiums\, and exhibitions–such as the OYASAF marble print workshop\, The Artmiabo Art workshop\, The Medallion Art workshop in honor of Kolade Oshinowo’s birthday\, Art in Medicine Fellowship and Workshop 2018\, and Artbridge Project Symposium–both within the country and internationally. Paul has been a member of The Beyond Borders Artists Association of Nigeria since 2017 and began working as an art instructor at THE METAPHOR in Lagos\, Nigeria in 2020. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nPatricia Hynes’s works are made of narratives of ordinary people in natural settings that challenge viewers to reflect upon their own lives. She believes that every reaction is unique and anyone can be a subject of her paintings. She focuses on the moments that are difficult for the eye and memory to capture\, which are pivotal to revealing the dynamic of a painting. To achieve this\, she takes numerous  “action” photographs of subjects\, then transforms these images into a montage that becomes a visual concept. The painting’s visual origins are transformed through composition and pigment\, leading her studies on how people react to life situations. She paints in oils using a variety of small brushes to create expressive visuality and a reading tempo that actively engage viewers in thought and interpretation of her works.  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nPaul Fuentes has been directing national commercials and campaigns at his own production company with Screen Gems. His knowledge and understanding of advertising\, pop culture\, theater\, film\, and classic and modern masters have informed his paintings throughout time. After graduating from Temple University\, Fuentes moved to New York where his paintings and illustrations appeared in national ads and publications including The New York Times. He worked in broadcast advertising and promotion at NBC and later HBO\, where he became a creative director and then began to direct. He soon opened his own production company with Screen Gems where he directed hundreds of national commercials and campaigns. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nStephanie Deshpande is a representational painter living in northern New Jersey\, and is best known for her psychological portraits and narrative paintings. Her works combine a love of realism with personal allegories and create unearth hidden emotions that capture the quiet drama of the world around her. She has showcased her paintings in several noticeable exhibitions such as Painting Today for International Women’s Day 2019 in Barcelona\, Spain\, and American Women Artists for the Tuscon Art Museum in Tuscon Arizona. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nAllison Lewis demonstrates high levels of expressionism in her art influenced by her incredible life experiences. Being a philanthropic individual\, Lewis has crafted art in New Brunswick for those who are homeless\, as well as for those who are mentally ill. She does this out of the kindness of her heart and for the love of art. Her art is demonstrated in many different forms\, by being displayed not only to loved ones\, but to therapy groups and in art classes. The expressions in her drawings have a massive variety: they can express any topic\, whether it be cancer\, love\, or anger. Her inclusiveness of individuals is incredible….. Allison is additionally passionate about showcasing her art to handicapped individuals. Her kindheartedness puts a much heavier meaning into her paintings. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nCarol Radsprecher was born in Brooklyn and remained in New York City for her BFA and MFA in painting at Hunter College. Now\, she has started to explore the stimulating world of photoshop and digital art. Through this medium\, Radsprecher paints different layers with speed and in doing so is able to manipulate and render infinite variations of her abstracted figures. Each image contributes to a series that is both narrative and autobiographical in exploring the first landscape we see in the world– the female body. With her work published and in solo and group exhibitions\, Radsprecher has shown her distorted representations at galleries in the tri-state area beyond including at the Victory Hall Drawing Rooms\, Rogue Community College Gallery\, Grants Pass\, The Alliance Gallery\, Metropolitan Community College’s Next Gallery\, Pierro Gallery\, Garrison Art Center\, and Thompson Park Art Exhibition Series.  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \nSeema Singh Dua has been a sculptor for the past fifteen years in India. Since then\, she has been featured innumerable galleries across the globe and had the distinct honor of being commissioned by the Home Ministry for their museum in Nirman Bhawan\, Delhi\, India. Her artist career began with studying textile designing with a specialization in printing technologies and working as a free-lance textile designer. After many years of developing her sculptural techniques\, Dua has started to emphasize the interior aspect of her pieces by connecting her audience with the inner soul of the sculpture. She considers the aesthetic exterior of art is just a small part of a larger experience. Using the concepts of interior and exterior\, Dua encourages her audience to contemplate the dichotomies of the physical and the cerebral\, reality and imagination\, and the exposed and the hidden.  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nYongshin Cho is a truly global artist who has worked both in Seoul\, South Korea and Paris\, France for the past forty years. Cho began his career at Hongik University with a BFA in painting which was followed by another BFA and MFA at the Université Paris. In 1995\, he was invited to be a part of the International Video and Multimedia Art Festival where he garnered critical acclaim. After that\, Cho continued to become involved in notable projects\, artists residencies\, and teaching with his particular style. He was also featured in many exhibitions in France (such as the Grand Palais\, and Salon of France International Fine-art Society\, Biennale d’art Contemporain)\, Korea (not limited to the Whanki Museum\, Gwangju Biennal\, and PICAF International Contemporary Art Exhibition) and United States (including the Cleveland Internation Drawing Contest & Exhibit\, Queens College\, and Riverside Gallery). His works have been heavily informed by the experience of living through the brutality of the Gwangju Uprising. With that context\, Cho chooses to use his medium to take a critical look at social\, political\, and cultural structures that incur injustice and inequality.   \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \nJung Gun Park a current professor in digital art and ceramics at Dongduk Women’s University\, has been featured in exhibitions in Taiwan\, China\, Japan\, and Korea. After earning a Ph.D. at Hong-Ik University in Seoul in ceramics\, Park has been featured in both group and solo exhibitions throughout Asia and receiving many awards at the Gyeonggi International Ceramic Biennale Competition\, the Hagi Grand Prix in Contemporary Ceramic in Japan\, and Tawain Ceramic Biennale among many others. His art style is focused on the idea of creating something as his father was an architect. Since a young age\, he considered buildings as things that were made versus something that was acquired transactionally. Park uses transportation as the main subject in many of his pieces as a way to critique contemporary rapid industrialization. He challenges his audience to introspect on how humans mediate between the inherent dangers and convenience with modern technology.  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \nMarina Burana was born in Argentina but received her BFA at Taipei National University of Arts in Taiwan where she currently works and resides. Because of her dual residencies\, Burana displayed her works in both Taiwan and Argentina group exhibitions. Since then\, she has also extended her portfolio to Mérida\, México\, and Los Angeles\, USA. Additionally\, Burana has designed the covers of several publications including a variety of magazines\, journals\, and even a poetry book. She enjoys manipulating the texture of oils across surfaces\, toying with the thickness. Burana recently started experimenting with different sources (such as tree bark) to make more natural\, earthy pigments. Along with nature\, she incorporates her own relationship with poetry and memory in her pieces. She utilizes these elements to weave a narrative that is deeply personal but also rooted in the natural world with strong\, full colors.  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \nNick Savides started painting when he was three years old when his mother began teaching how to paint. He continued with his formal education at Brandeis University where he received his BFA with highest honors. He has been featured in many exhibits in New York City\, as well as in Massachusetts\, upstate New York\, Connecticut\, New Jersey\, and Toronto\, Canada. He was also published by Nabi Press and in 2016’s Art Voices Art Books’ in 101 Contemporary Artists as well as John Natsoulas Press. Savides started as a realist oil painter where he began to focus on representing light and its many shades. Many of his paintings use light as a way to explore the concept of space. He uses this relationship in diverse landscapes (ranging from urban to rural)\, depictions of architecture in diverse settings\, and figures in portraits.   \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \nDeirdre Sheean  Was born and raised in New Jersey surrounded by a family of artists\, studied graphic design and illustration at Parsons in the 1970s and has continually renovated and updated her own style. By using stencils\, Sheean reveals intrinsic repetition both in the natural and the man-made with recursive symbols. During this process\, Sheean leaned into her graphic design background by using design systems to organize these motifs. Additionally\, she focuses on contrast to inform the composition of her pieces\, using the variety to allow the subjects to take on a life of their own. Sheean has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions throughout New Jersey and has received many awards at the Mercer County Artist\, Monmouth County Arts Council\, and most recently at the Ellarslie Open 36 in Trenton\, New Jersey.  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nThe Alfa Art Gallery is a non-profit organization devoted to the discovery\, growth\, and support of emerging and established artists within the art community. DESCRIPTION:Exhibition Duration: March 3\, 2020 – April 25\, 2020 \nOpening Reception: Thursday\, March 12 @ 5:00 pm  \nAlfa Art Gallery invites you to “LIFE DISTILLED”\, a three-person show with Meredeth Turshen\, Betty Jacobsen\, and Yvonne Skaggs\, featuring representative works from their numerous explorations in watercolor\, drawing\, collage\, and mixed media.     \nThe three artists have shown their work in a variety of exhibition venues around New York\, New Jersey\, and Pennsylvania since the 1980s. Through the years that Betty\, Meredeth and Yvonne have known\, worked and exhibited together\, they have influenced each other in many subtle ways\, especially with their commitment and dedication to express their feelings and visions artistically.  \nMeredeth Turshen is an artist\, teacher and writer who lives in Hoboken and taught at Rutgers University in New Brunswick\, NJ\, for more than 25 years. Her art studies began at age ten at the Art Students League in New York and continued\, after majoring in studio art at Oberlin College\, in workshops and residencies at Pratt\, the Printmaking Council of NJ\, the Rutgers Center for Innovative Printmaking\, Vermont Studio Center\, and Moulin à Nef (VCCA France). She exhibits regularly in the New York metropolitan region and with Viridian Gallery in Chelsea. For this exhibition\, she was inspired by the challenge of incorporating images of household décor\, floral arrangements and potted plants into collages that are simultaneously representational and non-figurative.   The collages reveal familiar objects through the lens of a modern artist\, giving quotidian scenes a new twist.  \nMeredeth’s art turns combines scenes from nature\, landscapes and interior features to create abstract compositions. Her collages present recognizable objects and the perspective of a modern artist. In this exhibition she shares with viewers the challenge of creating a non-figurative image with familiar items such as flowers and household décor.  The result is an overlapping of textures\, pops of color and geometry that pull your gaze across the entire image to investigate further ad recognize the features in each panel.  \nBetty Jacobsen\, an artist and educator\, trained at NYU and Montclair State University. She teaches advanced art classes at Hunterdon Central Regional High School. Her passions are art and nature\, coupled with education\, with nature serving as a personal metaphor for the cycles of life. Starting from observations of nature\, her work flows from the unconscious; it is quietly intimate in size. Her small works can stand individually yet create a larger visual statement when viewed together.  The repetition and relationship among parts is exciting\, as each series explores an idea through consistency of size and media.  Humble materials such as paper\, watercolor\, sewing thread\, feathers and pen have worked their way into three-dimensional pieces through folding. For the work shown here\, called The Walk\, Jacobsen used tiny bird feathers to create 100 paper triptychs.   \nBetty is inspired by nature. For her\, nature serves as a personal metaphor for lifecycles.  With this in mind\, and a longing to bring viewers into a private world with the work\, she creates small artworks with soft strokes of watercolors\, thread\, feathers and pen. The result is a piece that can almost be felt by viewers. And\, in a way\, can be. Betty’s works can be held by viewers\, an interaction she hopes is like reading a book.  \n Yvonne Skaggs\, an artist who exhibits two- and three-dimensional work in various venues in New York and New Jersey\,studied at the University of Iowa School of Art and Art History and the Art Students League in New York. Her varied career includes producing maps and technical drawings and designing and preparing exhibits for small history and art organizations. With traditional artifacts being destroyed around the world by man and nature\, she has been considering what we mean when we preserve objects\, paintings\, and artifacts of all kinds. With the abstracted still life images shown here\, she thinks about the definition of style and culture and the objects we choose to save to record our time. She uses the technique of collage\, reassembling elements to sculpt\, build and construct images. The papers and fabrics come from many sources – magazines\, newspapers\, photographs and paper and fabric.  \nYvonne’s art is inspired by themes of preservation and culture. Her art seeks to sculpt still life images with familiarity\, but are not replications. The materials used in her collages come from a variety of sources\, she utilizes magazines and newspapers\, her own photographs\, and paper and fabric she textured and colored.  \n

Our gallery will feature art of different mediums from various artists in this exhibit. We will be displaying thought provoking pieces that will engage the viewers imagination and allow for interpretation. This exhibition is called “Respective Space.” \nThe All Media Exhibition will incorporate themes of empowerment\, exploration and transformation. Alfa Art Gallery will showcase artists who use many mediums including acrylic paint\, sheet metal\, crayon\, watercolor and ink. This exhibition allows New Brunswick Art Salon to bring artists form a variety of backgrounds together. “The gallery regularly features art salon holding\, three annually in addition to hosting musicians\, solo exhibitions\, authors and actors\,” said Mary Ann Koruth\, writer from New Brunswick Today. Koruth continued\, “As a result of an overwhelming response to a call for artists\, the exhibition was presented in two parts.” \nAlfa Art invites to join us for our All Media Exhibition on Friday\, June 21\, 2019. Drawing inspiration form the traditional art salons of the 18th and 19th centuries\, we have used these events to connect talented artists with the New Brunswick public. Since the program’s inceptions in 2010\, the New Brunswick Art Salon has helped to enrich the community through its art. We attempt to spark a love and interest of the arts through our donations to the community including to the NJ Institute for Food\, Nutrition\, and Health in 2012. Thanks to the support of sponsors and patrons alike\, we have been able to expand our Art Salon. Originally\, it consisted of a Spring exhibition of Watercolor and Mixed Media and a Fall exhibition of Oil Color and Mixed Media. However\, now\, a Winter photography exhibition and more recently a Summer All Media exhibition has been added to out New Brunswick Art Salon Program. DESCRIPTION:Event Date: March 8\, 2019 at 6:30pm at Alfa Art Gallery\, 108 Church Street\, New Brunswick NJ. \nThe Alfa Art Gallery welcomes everyone to the Ceremony for the New Brunswick Art Salon 2018 Award Winners\, judged by Rocco Scary. This event will take place on March 8\, 2019. We will announce first\, second\, and third place award winners as well as all honorable mentions. \nThe New Brunswick Art Salons’ main aim is to build relationships and connections between local artists and the community. Talented artists from diverse backgrounds have been drawn into these exhibitions for the past eight years. \nThe New Brunswick Art Salons consists of three unique showings of oil color\, water color and mixed media artworks. \nThe Oil Color and Mixed Media exhibit\, “An Expanse of Expressionism” was held on April – June. The featured artwork boasted a wide array of visual aesthetics ranging from the impressionistic to the abstract style that expressionism is renowned for. \nOn June – August\, the “Visceral and Visionary” exhibition featured fine art from twenty artists specializing in all media. \nFrom October – December Alfa hosted “Transfiguration of the Form: Watercolor and Mixed Media” which featured nineteen local and international artists who specialized in the use of water color\, gel\, charcoal\, oil pastels and more. \nThe Alfa Art Gallery was delighted to have Rocco Scary as a judge of the New Brunswick Art Salon 2018 exhibitions. An active multi-disciplinary artist by himself\, Rocco Scary always brings exceptional perspective to the NBAS 2018 exhibitions. Rocco Scary is also an accomplished denizen of the art world accruing multiple awards and accolades from the New Jersey State Arts Council Fellowship to the Essex County Arts Council.

DESCRIPTION:Exhibition Duration: October 29th\, 2018 — December 22th\, 2018\nOpening Reception:  November 2nd\, 2018 @ 6:30pm \nBeginning on October 29th\, the Alfa Art Gallery will commence one of its flagship exhibitions\, the 2018 New Brunswick Art Salon for Water Color and Mixed Media. \nThis exhibit shows the multiplicity of techniques and imagery possible with the use of watercolors. Various mixed media pieces are also featured which compliment watercolor. These works cover a variety of artistic styles and subject matter. Viewers of all interests will find works that speak to them. Artists such as Allison Maletz and Indrani Choudhury take subjects directly from daily life such as wildlife\, people or landscapes and use delicate techniques and strong attention to detail to create works that resemble familiar life-scenes. Other artists like Agop Gemdijan and Christina Iacuzio create surreal works that are conjured up through their whimsical imaginations. Other featured artists such as Christina Argonish and Annie Liber use mixed media including collage and wire sculpture respectively in their artworks. Each artist in this exhibition uses watercolors to tell a story about how they experience the world. \nFeatured Artists: Agop Gemdjian\, Allison Maletz\, Christina Iacuzio\, Drew Maillard\, Edith Hillinger\, Hana Aviv\, Linda Laino\, Michael Price\, Hijo Nam\, Christina Argonish\, Eric Alexander Santoli\, Indrani Choudhury\, Jenna Inzetta\, Mary Ladd\, Melissa Cicero\, Tara LeGall\, Trisha Putkowski\, Annie Lieber\, Nicole Miritis \nAbout the “New Brunswick Art Salon” Exhibitions: \nAlfa Art Gallery possesses a great deal of reverence for the 18th and 19th century traditional art salons. During this era\, art salons were the single greatest annual or biannual melding of the artistic and intellectual minds of their time. For ten years\, Alfa has successfully emulated these  momentous events in its own unique way by bridging highly esteemed and talented artists with the New Brunswick public. The Winter offers a salon with exhibitions dedicated to photography while Spring hosts oil and mixed media. The Summer brings a collective consisting of all themes and the Fall presents a watercolor and mixed media exhibition. Alfa is dedicated to the discovery\, growth\, and support of emerging and established artists. We believe that visual art is a universal form of expression which can bridge cultural gaps and provide a forum where diverse perspectives can be shared and appreciated.
