May 24-th is maybe the most reputable Bulgarian holiday. During the centuries the values incarnated in its spirit helped the protection of the Bulgarian identity and gave inspiration to many generations. In 2006 and 2007 the Consulate General has offered each year to our New York audience and to the Bulgarian community several events celebrating the finest of the Bulgarian culture and arts. We put additional momentum into “Bulgarian Seasons” cultural festival. Jewish Sepharadic Songs in Ladino
Leaving Spain in the 15th century the Jews brought to the Balkans a part of the Spanish culture and specific poetry and songs. Transmitted from one generation to another, the songs preserved the language of Servantes, which is known today as Ladino. These songs have the specific qualities of romances, and are called “romancero”. The wonderful Garcia Lorka admits that he has often been delighted and inspired by them. The music of Sepharadic Songs in Ladino has the charm of the Spanish romance, but is also influenced by Oriental and Balkan rhythms, which make it unique.
