Artist Statement
My work is a mediation between the spiritual and the metaphysical. Reality is not as concrete as we all would like to think, this is one of the issues I deal with in my art. The art I create is part of a visual vocabulary, a constantly evolving personal language. I hope that the realization and bringing to life of my work that is non-mimetic and breaks from the illusion of representation and literal convention. I try to bring forth the indecipherable images, in my mind, into our shared reality.
About David’s Work
My animations deal with the elements of shape, line, color, sound, and time. They are a part of my process, whether I draw these forms on paper, paint them on canvas, or create on the computer. My visual vocabulary is brought into this medium and allows me to play with transformation over time, creating a different experience that cannot be accomplished in static mediums. The element of sound and my music are also essential to the animated works, adding layers to the experience by using these time based elements to go along with time based animated visuals. I am interested in the translation of my images in different media and exploring their properties and strengths.
All of the animations were done in Flash, Aftereffects, or both, in combination with Photoshop. Most of the work was started and drawn in Flash. I use Flash for vector based images, using the animation tools I can play with the timing and transforming of shapes and colors between the key frames which is termed “tweening”. There is an element of randomness in the morphing of one form into another. Aftereffects is used for some of the others because I can use a combination of scanned two dimensional sources, combine them with other video or flash animations, sound and music and have precise control over them utilizing the program’s lighting and effects.
