Rupal Patel is a paper mache artist who has worked with paper clay for the past eighteen years. She works in the tradition of vanishing art of Indian mask making, which dates back to the seventeenth century. These south Indian masks were commonly used in dance, drama, folk songs and religious rituals. Often, masks were worn by Kathkali dancers to depict good and evil characters from Hindu epics like Mahabharata and Ramayana.
