Artist Statement

“I am an artist, teacher and writer living in Hoboken and teaching at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ. I exhibit regularly in the New York metropolitan region, with Viridian Gallery in Chelsea, and with hob’art, an arts cooperative based in Hoboken. Through my artwork

I reflect on nature in landscape and still life, on the grace, whimsy and mystery of the human figure, and on the magic and tensions in relations between people. I like to represent these ideas non-figuratively in abstract compositions. My images often start with drawings of live models, exploring the use of the female figure as the basis of layered work. The paintings reflect my interest in body movement and dance theater, particularly the work of Alwin Nikolais. A number of the works in this exhibit started as monotypes, a technique developed by Edgar Degas that I learned at a Rutgers workshop. Sometimes I incorporate reverse or transfer drawing, a technique used by Paul Klee. The transfer work in printing ink gives a soft, rich and varied line. I like the freedom and immediacy of drawing, its relation to handwriting, and the possibility of painting with oil sticks and soft pastels. The rapidity of the processes enables me to express a wide range of moods.

My art studies began at age ten at the Art Students League in New York with Saturday classes for children and continued, after majoring in studio art at Oberlin College, in workshops at Pratt, the Printmaking Council of NJ, the Rutgers Center for Innovative Printmaking, the CT Center for Graphic Arts, and elsewhere. For the past ten years I have been spending a month at Vermont Studio Center, a stimulating residency for artists and writers. Some have asked how I combine a career in art with teaching. Both are passions; one seems as necessary to my existence as the other. The year I wrote my dissertation is the only year I did not paint.”
