Background

Mary Ellen Scherl is a sculptor born in Miami, Florida who graduated from Washington University. She is currently located in New York, and creates abstract, modern female figures in various mediums of metal. Her most prominent works include “Monumental Woman”, “Mamorial to Survivors” and “The Contortionist”. She has been exhibited in events related to women’s health such as “Femina Potens”, using art to help people connect to their bodies and the positive and negative experiences they have in them. While the female figure has long been the subject of art, poetry and other diverse forms of expression, Scherl takes a modern, critical look at the relationship women have with their own bodies and health. Her sculptures isolate the figure in a bold fashion that forces the viewer to confront the body in its most basic, natural form.
