Marie Sturken’s fascination with the kimono shape has taken many forms, most recently in both handmade paper and monotype, and she uses the limitless possibilities of the form as a vehicle for creative expression and exploration. Her recent works reflect her interest in fabric and yarn, and include embedded stitched Japanese papers shaped with an incense burner. Like many contemporary artists, she finds the low-tech aspect of making paper by hand, of natural fibers, a very attractive medium. Because of its organic nature, it has become her primary focus for conveying her ideas. Marie has been trained in art at several schools, including Pratt Institute, Rutgers University, and Grand Central Art School.
