About Agop Gemdjian

The path to artistic development is distinct for every individual who chooses to pursue a career in a creative field. For Bulgarian-raised Armenian artist Agop Gemdjian, years of work in areas such as graphic design, painting, sculpture and art installation have enabled him to reach what he considers artistic maturity. According to Gemdjian, his artistic maturity is defined by the point he has reached in his life in which he is able to create art using the amalgamation of his experiences as an artist and as a person. Eastern Europe is a land of lush forests, dense mountain ranges, and, most relevant to Gemdjian, rich colors amid its natural beauty. The inspiration that he derives from these vivid motifs fuels his desire to portray the beauty of the modern world through expressive white figures placed against color strewn backdrops and through the lens of the Slavic mentality. Through the interconnectivity he shares with his deft hand and creative soul, he expresses the realities of the world around him. Having exhibited in more than 20 national juried exhibitions in Bulgaria and also in The Netherlands, Poland, UK, Germany Canada, Russia and more as well as 25 solo exhibitions, Gemdjian’s artistic accomplishments are indicative of the impact his expressionistic works have had on viewers throughout the world. Featured in films, television and often the recipients of many an award, Gemdjian has succeeded in his aim to elicit the same feelings within his viewers that he experiences when he gazes upon his works.

Artist Statement

After several years of work in graphic techniques, painting,  sculpture,  and art installations,  I am now reaching my artistic maturity,  as I am creating art,  using all my experiences as an artist and a person,  an Armenian by origin,  born and raised in Bulgaria,  and now working in The United States. In my work I combine the bright colors of the east, the Slavic mentality, and my views of the modern world, the inner force of the icons and dynamics of the contemporary world.

With my work I’d like to discover beauty in everything, its meaning, its independent existence.  I’d like to reveal everything which surrounds us – words, objects, sounds, feelings, and signs.

I believe that direct contact between my soul and my hand is the only way to express the reality of our surroundings.

My goal is to be directed by my instincts and my emotions while creating, to be influenced by the subconscious view of the image and the idea of merging with my art beyond the level of my five senses.

I strive to awaken associations and emotions in the viewer that would bring him to the same spiritual state as I am in while working, not by shocking him but by inviting a closer scrutiny of the world.

My credo, my emotions and feelings, my thoughts, memories and insights, my troubles, joys and dreams are all in my works.
