Alfa Art Gallery is proud to kick off the New Year with its first exhibition of 2010 entitled, “We Need Never”, a group photography show featuring local Mason Gross students Ariana Arancibia, Conor Mack, and Naqeeb Stevens and New York-based photographers Eric Medsker and Michael Dalton. Through an array of figure studies, landscapes, documentary and staged photography, these five artists share uniquely youthful perspectives on various dimensions of the human condition.

In a deep and moving photographic series, artist Conor Mack explores the realm of personal loss through a series of sharply lit self portraits, displaced objects, and symbolic figures. Ariana Arancibia evokes a similarly grave mood in her emotional series entitled “Us”, which emphasizes the voyeuristic nature of photography by documenting a private space that she occupies as both a viewer and a subject. In a set of three figure studies, artist Naqeeb Stevens reveals the body as a blurred amorphous landscape. Through these deliberately softened photographs, this artist attempts to comment on the simulacra of virtual social interaction. In contrast to his usual portrait photography, Eric Medsker captures a set of desolate winter landscapes, in which the viewer is reminded of the unknown and untamed universe he or she inhabits. Brooklyn-based photographer, Michael Dalton, directs a sharp and single spotlight onto each of his subjects to compose eerily climactic yet intimately revealing photographs. Often staged in dark homes, Dalton draws his viewer into each dramatic narrative, providing the perfect balance between suspense and detail.
