Alfa Art Gallery is pleased to present “Transfigured”, a group exhibition featuring Lidia Simeonova, Don Bloom, Michael Fenton, Koenraad Seghers, Vesselin Kourtev and John Hawaka. Each of these artists creatively transforms their subject with contour lines of nebulous form, cascading seas of organic pattern, and impressionistic color fields that reinterpret fleeting moments of detail. In a ceaseless quest to capture the essence of human nature, these artists translate objective information by intimately echoing the emotive energy of their subjects.
Recently named “2010 Artist of the Year” by Boxheart Gallery and Art Inter/National Exhibition’s “Best in Show”, Lidia Simeonova is a Bulgarian artist that has participated in several national and international exhibitions. Her work contemplates the female countenance as it utilizes Klimt-esque design elements to highlight the tactile and sensual features of her subjects.
Inspired and informed by impressionists Seurat, Monet, and Bonnard, Don Bloom paints his figures with an educated playfulness for evanescent light and color. An artist that has abandoned black from the palette, Bloom renders each scene with a colorful luminosity that is more affected by subjective decisions than observant reactions.
Though mostly known for his recent abstract paintings, John Hawaka’s earlier work provides a powerful insight into the artist’s accomplished career. These works expressively probe into the darker side of Hawaka’s subjects, as the artist ejects a powerful sense of movement and visceral detail.
Alfa Art Galley Director, Vesselin Kourtev, is an internationally-acclaimed painter that is best known for his engaging portrayals of anomalous characters that emerge from their vibrant and enigmatic environments. Often mystified and sensual beings, Kourtev’s characters provide only subtle hints of narrative, offering its remaining abstraction up to the viewer.
Koenraad Seghers is a local full-time artist devoted to creating works that energize and invigorate his viewers through whimsical narratives. Seghers amalgamates various icons by overlapping their contour forms, creating a visual sense of lighthearted chaos.
Though educated in various artistic backgrounds, local artist Michael Fenton finds his greatest pleasure in portraiture. Capturing the subtle psychological elements of his subjects, Fenton renders figures with a sensitivity to expression and detail.
About our Musicians:
(Casio) SK Orchestra
The SK Orchestra creates experimental soundscapes and performs other ambient compositions using mostly vintage Casio Sk series keyboards. These keyboards are simple, yet versatile. They continue to be widely used in the experimental music community. We will not merely use them for their tones, which are desirable in their own right, but rather to utilize the full capabilities of the Sk series keyboards. Such capabilities include: Real-time sampling, 4-note polyphony, a looping function, and more. The project is about transcending limitations and recycling old technology. By exploiting the simple functions available on the keyboards, we breathe new life into old equipment, and show that "newer" does not necessarily mean "better".
The Jeff Dingler Justin Gaynor Duo has been a working group since 2007. A bassist and guitarist respectively, they formed the jazz duo as a way to work out new ideas in a more personal setting. They are both graduates of Mason Gross School of the Arts, and are now working professionally both together and with other acts in the tri-state area.
Borne (aka scott vizioli) has been dj'ing vinyl since 2000, playing ambient dubscapes to recline to, fuzzy minimal bleeps for butt moving and other related sounds in nooks, crannys, forests and concrete boxes ranging from the nyc area to north carolina. Tonight he'll attempt to do the same with brief, original laptop set.
