Alfa Art Gallery is pleased to introduce “Inner Circles”, a group exhibition featuring seven members from Bulgarian Artists Abroad, an eclectic group of collaborative artists from Chicago. Working together since 2007, Anna Yoshovska, Evgenia Petrova, Iskra Ivanova, Ivaylo Yoshovski, Jordan Ivanov, Kamelia Tomanova and Vassilen Vasevski reciprocate themes of spirituality and human nature as they reflect on their Bulgarian heritage utilizing a variety of techniques and media.

Inspired by the nature of her native country, Anna Yoshovska uses simplistic imagery and symbology within her delightful abstractions of string and polymer clay. Fusing 3-dimensional fabric arts with paint, Yoshovska’s work explores composition and design aesthetics as an amalgamation of media.

Evgenia Petrova’s small scale abstractions are intimately rendered with a softness and depth that provoke an exploration of their diminutive surfaces. Translucent rectangles of warm hues are gently layered beneath seeping white drips of paint, while stark cilia renderings cast an unexpected element to their smooth surface. In other abstractions, Petrova combines nontraditional materials of paper, branches, and candles to further engage her viewer with playful mediums.

Iskra Ivanova’s work investigates the intangible and emotional experiences of human nature with polymer clay. In her work, Ivanova references mythological and primitive narratives while intimately employing the earth’s matter for symbolic effect. In order to stimulate her viewers, Ivanova often presents these naturalistic sculptures in conjunction with performing arts.

Activating a palette of rich and vibrant tones, Ivaylo Yoshovski titillates his viewer with imagery that is often suggestive in form. In “Pile of Pleasure”, Yoshovski constructs a floating assemblage of breast-like formations that float in a sea of cadmium yellow. Bright red peppers weave throughout these graphite forms, offering a strangely intriguing composition.

Jordan Ivanov combines various methods of painting to create an illusion of space and medium. Playfully fusing the tactility of paint with methodical drop shadows, Ivanov creates 3-dimensional collages on 2-dimensional surfaces. In his newest body of work, the artist transforms canvas into industrial material that is both violent and thought provoking in form.

Painting experimentally in acrylic, oil, and watercolor, Kamelia Tomanova’s representational works are infused with scenes from nature. Tomanova relies on the strength of creative impulse when composing her works, rarely planning a painting beforehand. This artistic inspiration stems from her native Bulgarian traditions, holidays, and folklore.

Vassilen Vasevski’s soft and serene paintings are informed by personal memories and dreams. Vasevski gently paints with warm and light hues to evoke a sense of harmony within his audience. His imagery is often kept simplistic and focuses on a single monochromatic icon, allowing the viewer’s eye to rest upon a peaceful blanket of luminous form.

"Everything in life goes in circles. People, places and emotions come and go leaving behind a sense of an interrupted rhythm. Art follows this pattern: our desires, dreams and memories are simply mirrored in the work we create. Bright or dull, simple or more complex, we live and express ourselves between the lines of our inner circles.

The group of artists you see in this exhibition has been working together since 2007. Through a continuous collaboration in group shows and art fairs we have realized many similarities and common trends between us. We are coming from the same background, we live in the same country, and we strive towards artistic freedom and originality. Each one of us travels among their inner circles that in general resemble one another.

With this show we would like to offer a glimpse to our inner paths and directions. It is our hope that while the public sorts out through colors and shapes it may recognize some of our life circles as their own."
