About “Dimensions”
by Michiko Mull, Curator

Alfa Art Gallery is pleased to present Dimensions, a group exhibition of works by Juan Torres, Tim Riley, John Hawaka, Rodney Durso, Kaitlin Deering, and Jill Caporlingua.

John Hawaka’s rare lacquer technique provides a nontraditional approach, in which vibrant colors explode over the canvas to produce remarkable forms that evoke a sense of biological phenomena. Similarly employing color as a focal point, Kaitlin Deering’s organic abstractions are developed through a process of dripping, where bold lines of green and blue penetrate soft layers of warm hues.

Tim Riley utilizes loose grayscale portrayals of everyday spaces in order to explore a parallel realm of color and life. Spirals and symbols are exclusively rendered in color, evoking a mystical yet mathematical energy that emanates from seemingly mundane furniture. Juan Torres generates a much darker space, in which bent geometric structures are forcefully anchored to their ground.  In these claustrophobic and unforgiving quarters, disabled and defenseless constructions are left solely for display.

Rodney Durso’s text based compositions emulate a graffitied bathroom wall, as he crudely assembles ambiguous markings, primitive obscenities and political ramblings against a flat background. Likewise, Jill Caporlingua quilts a geometric board of bold compositions that reference biology, television, and traffic signals.
